It was a family affair for the Adam brothers’, Newhouse of Glamis, when they took home the top two prices at the young farmers’ over wintered calf competition at Forfar auction market on behalf of Lawrie and Symington.

Due to the Covid-19 restrictions the challenging decision was made that the pre-sale show would be cancelled and saw just 14 young farmers calves forward, with a disappointing 18 purchased in November not forward. Bullocks (9) and heifers (5) attained an average of £1181 and £1236 respectively.

Topping the sale at £1320 was a 545kg 11-month-old Limousin heifer from James Adam of Forfar YFC, when she sold to Craig Malone, Pitcairn, Fife. She was originally bought from the Houston’s at Glenkirlie, for £1040, weighing 350kg.

James also took home the best return on capital selling his second entry, another Limousin cross heifer, for £1150, achieving a profit of £490. She was bred by Wester Bleaton, Blairgowrie, originally weighing 335kg and was sold at 525kg.

Keeping it in the family and taking second top price of £1310 was brother, Andrew Adam’s entry a 505kg one-year-old Limousin, also bred by the Houston’s Glenkirlie. Achieving a weight gain of 165kg and a profit of £300.

Taking home the trophy for the best daily live-weight gain was the one-year-old Limousin cross bullock, Freddie, from Lyndsay Nelson of Brechin YFC, which was bred by Glenkilrie. When first bought he weighed 325kg and gained 1.62kg/day to be sold weighing in at 625kg. Freddie headed home to Mr Kitson, Yorkshire, for £1260, leaving Lyndsay with a £345 profit.
