All classes of stores met a strong trade at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale of 580 store and weaned cattle, where trade peaked at £1240 for a British Blue heifer from Close Farm, Penrith.

The same home also took the top price amongst the bullocks at £1195.

The firm also sold 265 calves which were topped at £560 by a British Blue bull from Messrs Forrest, Meinfoot Farm, Ecclefechan and £435 for a heifer from the same home.

All classes met a firm trade, with grazing kinds keenly sought after, at Dingwall and Highland Marts sale' of 773 store cattle and 38 OTM cattle.

Top prices were 306.9p per kg and £1260 for British Blue cross heifers from Achnahannet, Dulnain Bridge, with heifers balancing out at 218.2p per kg overall.

Bullocks averaged 228.6p from a top price of 270.9p for a Limousin cross from Howbeg, Lochboisdale, and £1155 for Aberdeen-Angus crosses from Torispardon, Boat of Garten.

Stirling (UA)

Buyers were out in force for United Auctions' sale of 2164 store cattle, where a record number of 156 sellers were fully supported by a crowded but socially distanced ring of purchasers, who despite the challenges faced by continued falling prime beef prices, bid keenly right up to the end.

As a result, the sale compared well to last year’s event with 1096 bullocks selling to 268.80p per kg for a 279kg Charolais cross from Knollhead, and to £1235 for a 614kg Limousin cross from New Carden, to level at 217.74p per kg.

Top pence per kg among the 971 heifers was 275.10p paid for a 338kg Limousin cross from Upper Obney, or £1205 per head for a 650kg Charolais cross from Todpark. They averaged 213.70p per kg

Limousin crosses led the young bulls (32) which sold to 237.60p from Kirkland, and to £1100 from Windsole, to balance out at 214.20p.

All cast cows met an increased demand, peaking at £1390 for Aberdeen-Angus from Fernie Mill, and to 176.20p per kg for Limousins from Hapland.

On Monday, the firm sold 196 breeding cattle, which peaked at £3600 for a Limousin cross heifer and a bull calf from Pitcairn.

Aberdeen and Northern Marts held their biggest store sale of the season to date when they sold 2051 cattle, where quality-bred yearling stirks attracted the biggest premium.

Limousin crosses led the bullocks at 270.3p per kg from Crichie, Inverurie, and to £1325 from Braco Park, Rosehearty, to average 218.8p per kg.

Heifers reached 280.1p for a 282kg Limousin from Auchernack, Grantown on Spey, and to £1280 for a 604kg Limousin cross from Westerloch, Wick, to level at 214.5p.

Bulls (19) averaged 177.5p, peaking at 204.1p for a 436kg Limousin cross from Auchernack and to £1150 for a Limousin from Crichie, Inverurie.

Heifers with breeding potential met an exceptional demand at United Auctions' sale of 1001 store cattle and OTMS, with natural-bred grazing cattle still selling at a similar trade, however cattle carrying too much flesh were slightly easier on the week.

Simmental crosses from Connachie, Elgin, topped the heifers (499) at 323.9p per kg and £1780, to level at 220.7p per kg.

Heifers peaked at £1280 for a Limousin from Messrs Rochester and Murray, Glebe Farm, Butsfield.

Topping the cast sheep at £112 was a Texel tup from JB and N Harrison, Colepike.

Smaller hoggs again met strong demand for an end of the season show, however heavy hoggs were harder to place topping at £86 for Texel crosses from GA Ogle, Blackburn.

On Monday Caledonian Marts held their fortnightly sale of 743 store cattle, where bullocks and heifers levelled at 214p per kg and 212p respectively.

An Aberdeen-Angus bullock led the trade at 265p per kg from AJ and G Orr, Lawhead of Stobwood, Forth, and to £1220 for a Limousin from J and J Graham, Mains of Burnbank, Blairdrummond.

Heifers peaked at 244 p for Limousins from C Dick, Taylorton, Stirling, and to £1190 for a Limousin from D Reid, Middlerigg, Falkirk.

Darlington

Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held a special sale of ewes, gimmers and hoggs with lambs at foot in conjunction with their weekly sale of cast cattle and store stock on Monday, which saw 754 sheep and 281 cattle forward.

Top price in the cattle was £1160 for a Limousin heifer from G and A Gibson and Son, High Etherley, whilst heading the steer prices was a British Blonde cross steer from J Robson, Stoney Stoops, Greta Bridge, which attained £1100.

The sheep trade peaked at £260 for Texel cross ewes from C and E Gaskin of Hillingdon Farm, Marwood.

A good turn out of hoggs and lambs averaged £92.33 per life throughout, with a top price at £200 was shared between two – Texels with single lambs from C and R Metcalf, Park House Farm, Barningham, and Mule hoggs with single lambs from MW Reed, West Biggins, Frosterley.

Bullocks (81) averaged 219.2p per kg and sold to 275.7p for 301kg Charolais crosses from Gillock Mains, Gillock, and to £1090 for a 502kg Limousin cross

from Quintfall, Lyth.

The same homes also topped the heifer (56) trade firstly at 275.8p for Charolais crosses from Gillock Mains, and to £1005 for a 453kg Limousin cross from Quintfall, to level at 226.5p.

Continentals from Gansclett, Thrumster led the way among the old season store lambs at £77, whilst feeding ewes and rams attained £80 for Cheviots from The Maltings, Thurso.
