A busy week for Harrison and Hetherington saw an increased entry of 781 store and 135 weaned cattle at their weekly sale.

Top end stores met a flying trade, with a top call of £1300 achieved for a Limousin cross bullock from I and KM Watson, Howrigg, Wigton.

Heifers sold to £1260 twice from J and M Beattie, Shield Green, Kirklinton and Messrs Thomlinson, Standing Stonerigg, Kirklinton.

A smaller show of weaned cattle met with a strong trade again, reaching £985 for Limousin bulls from S Thomlinson, Park View, Scalby, and for another of the same from Messrs Wallace, Mains of Collin Farm, Castle Douglas.

Steers sold to £980 for more Limousins from Messrs Grant, Bayldon House, Haltwhistle, whilst heifers were topped at £850 for another Limousin this time from Messrs Gill, Newlands.

The monthly sale of beef breeding cattle, on Friday, had a catalogued entry of 100 head which saw heifer and calf units produce a 100% clearance. Top price was £1820 for a Limousin heifer with Limousin heifer calf from Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brow, Mealsgate. A Limousin cow and calf from Messrs Byers, Whitehills Farm, Walton, reached £1800.

Bulling heifers were more selective peaking at £1400 for two Limousin heifers from Messrs Muir, Laithes, Penrith.

Their weekly sale of breeding sheep on Monday was topped at £100 for Texel hoggs from Messrs Taylor, The Harras, Ainstable.

Store hoggs (431) sold to £98 for Cheviots from West Pittentrail, Rogart, whilst ewes (291) peaked at £102 for a Suffolk cross from Midfearn Farms, Ardgay.

A Texel cross ewe with twin Texel cross lambs topped the ewe and lamb trade at £198 for Kirkhill Farm, Alves.

A buoyant demand was seen for the 1874 store cattle and 148 cast cows forward for United Auctions' weekly sale.

Bullocks (952) reached 289.50p per kg for an 228kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Dalreoch, and £1235 for a 692kg Limousin cross from Busses, to average 215.54p.

Topping the heifer (847) trade at 289.50p was a 380kg Limousin cross from Dykehole, and to £1250 for a 600kg Simmental cross from Neuk, to level at 212.35p.

Young bulls (3) averaged 179.07p having sold to 210.20p for a Limousin cross from White Sykes, and to £790 for a Charolais cross from South Kirklane.

On Monday, the firm also sold 524 breeding sheep, where trade peaked at £85 for Mule hoggs with single Charollais lambs from Porterstown.

A Charolais from David Winder, Midtown, Winder, led the steers selling to £1375, whilst the bulls peaked at £1275 for a Limousin from Greenhill, Little.

Harrison and Hetherington held their fortnightly sale of store and grazing cattle, where bullocks and heifers averaged 216.9p per kg and 209.9p respectively.

Topping the sale at £1240 was an Aberdeen-Angus cross bullock from Whitfield Farms, and 259.3p per kg was paid for another of the same breed from Langhope.

More Aberdeen-Angus topped the heifers at £1195 from Ayton Cocklaw, and to 242.1p for Limousins from Todshawhaugh.

Ewes with lambs met a flying trade, topping at £77 per head for Texel cross ewes with Beltex cross lambs from Hawksnest, to average £71.15.

Thainstone

A useful show of 1665 store cattle, young and weaned cattle met a strong demand again at Aberdeen and Northern Marts weekly sale.

Bullocks (806) attained 325.7p per kg for a 304kg Charolais from Glebe of Deisher, Boat of Garten, and to £1220 for a 654kg Charolais from Catterloch, Raemoir, to average 219.9p.

Simmentals from Crossburn, Keith, topped the heifers (836) at 277.8p, whilst a 674kg Limousin from Bankhead, Kemnay, sold for the top price per head of £1270, to level at 215.8p.

Bulls (22) averaged 211.8p and reached 244.4p for a pair of 266kg Limousins from Drumforber, Laurencekirk, and to £920 for a 414kg Beef Shorthorn from Wrangham, Colpy.

On Tuesday the firm sold 229 head of adult breeding cattle, where good quality strong outfits easily maintained last sale high rates although younger calves were less sought after. Towiemore led the trade with Simmental and Simmental cross heifers with calves selling to £3300, with a further five outfits selling for more than £3000.

Also sold on Tuesday were 1368 head of ewes and hoggs with lambs at foot which peaked at £90 for Mules with a lamb and a half from Newton, Tullynessle.

Ewes with lambs hit £76 for Suffolks with twins from Odmoston, Laurencekirk.

Last week's sale at Lawrie and Symington's saw 984 store cattle forward with Limousin cross bullocks from Wester Walston topping the trade at £1230, and to 259p per kg for a Limousin from Lochlyoch.

Bullocks and heifers averaged 214.8p and 209.8p respectively.

A top price among the heifers of £1210 was achieved on two occasions, firstly for a Charolais cross from Knockshinnoch, and for more of the same breed from Netherurd Mains, whilst top pence per kg attained 255p which was paid for a Limousin from Buteland.

An Aberdeen-Angus cross bullock from Messrs Metcalf, Fairley, Consett, County Durham, topped Hexham and Northern Marts' annual May Term sale of 725 suckler bred store cattle, selling at £1310.

Cast ewes and rams met increased demand with heavier ewes slightly dearer on the week, reaching £116 for Texel ewes from D Barron, New Acres.

End of season store hoggs sold to £90 for Texel crosses from MT Findlay, Hallington High.
