Scottish producers made their presence felt at Harrison and Hetherington’s May sale of 495 heifers at Kirkby Stephen, buying several of the lead priced lots.

Craig and Katreen Malone, Pitcairn, Fife, bought the top priced lot at £1800 – a 14-month-old Limousin cross from Messrs Beckwith, New Hall.

John McAlister, Wester Thomaston, Banknock, purchased the next two at £1745 and £1700. Dearest was an 11-month-old British Blue cross from Messrs Sedgley, Low Bank House, Barbon, with the £1700 bid given for a seven-month-old similarly bred heifer from Messrs Millar, Crookholm, Canonbie.

Trade for all types of heifers was described as being ‘off the clock’, with smart well-bred heifers for both feeding and breeding said to be one of the dearest ever.

More than 50 heifers sold for between £1200-£1800 and more than a third realised in excess of £1100.

Heifers with breeding potential regularly sold at in excess of £1400 with 10 heifers sold between £1500-£1800.

An average of £1015.31 for mostly yearling cattle was achieved.

Stirling UA

A 750kg out of spec Limousin cross stot from Whitrighill, topped United Auctions’ weekly sale of 713 store cattle and 102 cast cows, selling for £1370.

Limousin crosses also led pence per kg section amongst the 364 bullocks at 308pg from Glenshalloch, Oban, and to £1310 from Dalcrue, to average 222.55p.

Heifers (312) peaked at 271.40p for a 280kg Limousin cross from Tiraghoil (Mull), and to £1280 for a 730kg Montbeliarde cross from Wardpark, to level at 211.34p.

Limousin crosses from Knollhead, led the young bulls (15) at 222.50p, and to £1010 for an Aberdeen-Angus cross from Gateside, to balance out at 199.93p.

On Saturday, the firm sold 88 breeding cattle, which reached £2500 for a Simmental cross heifer with heifer calf from Knockgerran.

Harrison and Hetherington’s annual term sale of breeding cattle, sold to £2400 for a Limousin cross heifer with calf from Messrs King of Gospelhall.

The fortnightly sale of store cattle staged the same day was topped by an Aberdeen-Angus cross bullock from Messrs Hamilton, Birneyknowe, at £1195 and to 260p per kg for a British Blue cross bullock from Kedzlie Farms.

Heifers and bullocks averaged 204.92p and 210.62p respectively.

Breeding sheep sold to £79 for a Beltex from Wester Ulsto.

All classes were dearer on the week at Craig Wilson’s sale of 403 store cattle, where bullocks and heifers averaged 218.3p and 207.9p per kg respectively.

Top prices were £1270 paid for a Simmental heifer from Cardryne, and 239.1p per kg given for a British Blue from Laigh Cleughearn.

More Blues from Laigh Cleughearn topped the bullocks at £1215, while Limousins from Broadshean made 259.4p.

Thainstone

All classes were dearer on the week at Aberdeen and Northern Marts sale of 661 store cattle and weaned calves.

Bullocks (295) and heifers (349) averaged 229.3p and 224.2p per kg respectively.

Topping the trade at 291.1p per kg was a 292kg Limousin bullock from Ben Craig, Aberlour. Lead price per head amongst the stots was £1325 paid for a 824kg British Blue from North Auchronie, Skene.

Heifers attained 276.2p for 286kg Limousins from Cairntack, Belhelvie, and sold to £1235 for a 612kg Hereford from North Auchronie.

Bulls (13) levelled at 207.5p having peaked at 244.9p for 390kg Simmentals from Raefin, Keith, and to £1050 for a 496kg Aberdeen-Angus from South View, Keith.

Demand for breeding sheep was again strong and dearer on the week, having been topped at £83 per life on two occasions.

First were Suffolk cross hoggs with single lambs from Whitelums, Gartly, and later for Mule gimmers with lambs from Cruats, Portknockie.

On Tuesday, the firm sold 139 head of adult breeding cattle to include four bulls.

Top price was £3300 given for a Limousin with Limousin cross heifer calf at foot from Whitton Mains.

Last week’s store cattle sale through Lawrie and Symington saw 516 forward with bullocks and heifers averaging 218.4p per kg and 214.8p respectively.

Aberdeen-Angus led the bullocks which peaked at £1290 from Bowridge, and to 280.9p per kg from Skipness Est.

Heifers reached £1190 for a Limousin cross from Blackburn Mains, and a Limousin from Howford, Innerleithen, and to 260.1p for a Charolais from Scrogton.

On Monday, Penrith and District Farmers’ Mart held their fortnightly sale of 300 store cattle, which saw a sharper trade with most classes being up £50 per head.

Caledonian Marts’ sold 765 sheep at their first sale of dry hoggs, hoggs with lambs in conjunction with all classes of ewes with lambs at foot.

Top price was £204 for Texel hoggs with single lambs from R McNee, Woodend, Armadale, whilst ewes with lambs attained £198 for Texel cross ewes with twin lambs from AD Kinnimonth, Kinnighallen, Aberfeldy.

Longtown

The fortnightly sale of store cattle through C and D Auction Marts, comprised mainly of native-bred yearling sorts, but it was Simmental bulls from Waterhead of Dryfe, Lockerbie, that topped the trade at £875.

Bullocks reached £770 for Aberdeen-Angus from TG Warwick and Son, Girnwood, Hawick, with more of the same leading the heifers at £795 for WK McGowan, Craiglea, Berwick.

Some 671 ewes and hoggs with lambs at foot were also forward, reaching £92 per life for Beltex hoggs with singles from A and W Bell, Thomas Telford Road.
