Carlisle

A buoyant demand was witnessed at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale of store and weaned cattle which saw 463 head forward.

Topping the stores was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Crowther, West Trailtrow, Lockerbie, that made £1330.

Heifers peaked at £1300 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Brown, Willows, Workington.

The 230 weaned cattle was led by a yearling Limousin bull from Karen Henshall, Sarkshields, which realised £1530.

A larger entry of 322 calves, reached £520 for a pair of Limousin bulls from Messrs Sharp, Wolsty Hall, Silloth.

Stirling UA

United Auctions sold 496 store and 122 OTM cattle at their weekly sale, where bullocks and heifers averaged 226.03p per kg and 215.58p respectively.

Limousin crosses topped the bullocks at 313.20p per kg for a 190kg entry from Coalheugh Glen, and to £1370 for a 644kg bullock from Craigenton.

Among the heifers, trade peaked at 278.40p for a 194kg Limousin cross from Coalheugh Glen, and to £1260 for a 638kg Beef Shorthorn cross from Bogtonlea and Wester Clevage.

A Charolais cross from Leslie Park, led the young bulls selling for 215.70p, whilst top per head at £1170 was a Limousin cross from Stralochy. They levelled at 196.27p.

Also sold were 892 breeding sheep, which hit a top of £106 for Texel cross hoggs with lambs at foot from T Muirhead, Carse of Trowan.

More than 300 store cattle and beef bulling heifers were forward for Craig Wilson's weekly sale, where all classes sold dearer on the week, with bullocks and heifers averaging 220.3p per kg and 217.2p respectively.

Top price came in the form of Aberdeen-Angus cross bullocks from Littleton, achieving £1240, while lead price per kg was 270p for Charolais bullocks from Upper Ettrick.

Among the heifers it was a Simmental from Whiteridden, that led the trade at £1300 and 254.9p.

Thainstone

All classes of breeding cattle increased in value at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale of 96 adult breeding cattle.

Top price was £3600 paid for a Limousin cross cow with a spring-born Limousin steer calf from East Gowkhill, Maud.

In-calf heifers from A Gibb, Backhill of Seggat, were topped at £2350 for Simmental crosses.

Demand for the 668 ewes with lambs at foot continued to reach high levels, with all breeds keenly bid for.

Ewes with lambs sold to £82 per life for Texels with lamb and half from Rumblie, Craigievar, whilst hoggs with lambs peaked at £74 for Cheviots with lamb and a half from South Farden, Newburgh.

Trade lifted again on the week at Hexham and Northern Marts' sale of 336 store cattle, which saw a top price of £1520 for a Limousin cross young bull from the Carruthers family, Silloans.

A small but select number of older, forward cattle peaked at £1370 for a Limousin bullock from George Brown, Old Hall, Durham with more of the same leading the heifers at £1350 for Messrs Jackson, Midgeholm.

Cast ewes and rams met strong demand with averages £8 up on the week. They sold to £104 for a Suffolk cross ewe from R Beattie, East Highridge, whilst Mule ewes peaked at £88 from RFs Newall, Low Barns.

On Monday Penrith and District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 152 store cattle, where a dearer trade was witnessed with most cattle up £50-£60 per head on the fortnight.

The sale was topped at £1295 twice for a British Blue cross Limousin bullock and heifer both from Far Close Farms, Dufton.

Topping the young cattle at £1045 was a 10-month-old Limousin cross British Blue heifer from JE and DJ Hutchinson, Hebblethwaite Hall.

Mule hoggs with single lambs led the way at Caledonian Marts sale of 286 breeding and store sheep, selling to £180 from J McKenzie, Ashfield, Balloch.

Among the nine store sheep, trade peaked at £48 for Blackface hoggs from B Walker, Carloonan, Inverary.

Also forward were 21 calves and stirks, which saw trade reach £370 for a Beef Shorthorn bullock calf from J Gilmour and Son, Drumelzier, Denny.

Longtown

The weekly sale of 516 ewes and hoggs with lambs, at C and D Auction Marts' sold to an extremely keen ring of buyers, selling to £106 a life for Texel hoggs with single lambs from Messrs MacTaggart, Station Yard.

One of the highlights of the sale would be the annual consignment of hoggs with lambs from RJ Muir, Low Stanley, who sold 156 sheep to top at £96 and average £84.35.

On Tuesday, Lawrie and Symington had forward 168 store and breeding cattle which saw bullocks and heifers average 223.7p per kg and 219.7p respectively.

Bullocks sold to £1165 for a 570kg Limousin cross from DM Keay and Sons, East Balloch, and to 267.6p per kg for a 340kg Limousin from D and I Mackintosh, Kirkton of Kingoldrum.

South Devon crosses weighing 446kg topped the heifers at £1040 from DJ Smith, Cranley, and sold to 253.5p for a 355kg Limousin cross from JA Millar, Kellyfield.

More South Devon crosses from DJ Smith, Cranley, led the young bulls at £810 and 187.9p per kg.

Attaining top price among the breeding cattle was a British Blue cow and Limousin bull calf from Tillygloom, which made £1400.

United Auctions sold 241 store cattle, 31 breeding cattle, 553 ewes and lambs and 430 feeding sheep at their sale where bullocks and heifers averaged 253.73p per kg and 241.91p respectively.

Topping the trade at £1130 was a 512kg Charolais cross bullock from Messrs Epps, Ardnave Farm, Islay. Top per kg was 325.80p paid for a 198kg Limousin cross from F Boa, Antuim, Mull.

Among the heifers, a 362kg Limousin cross attained £970 also from Messrs Epps, Ardnave, and sold to 289p for Limousin crosses from H Boa, Antuim, Mull.

Breeding cattle peaked at £2250 for a Simmental cross heifer with bull calf at foot from D Dempster, Barguillean, Taynuilt.

Texel cross ewes with twins from the Execs of the Late D MacDougall, Strathorchy, Dalmally, led the ewes and lambs, selling to £81.

Lockerbie

On Tuesday, Harrison and Hetherington held their fortnightly sale of store cattle and cast cows, with as high a demand as anticipated, many smaller grass cattle on offer, quality was well bid for.

Aberdeen-Angus bullocks topped the store trade at £1015 from Messrs McGarva, Barwhanny, and to 268p per kg for Herefords from Messrs Long, Keyla Park.

Heifers peaked at £1065 for more Aberdeen-Angus from Darlawhill, and to 241.9p for British Blues from Laverockhall.
