Carlisle

One of the best trades for some time was achieved at Harrison and Hetherington’s weekly sale of 500 store cattle, which was topped at £1380 for Limousin heifers from Messrs Weal, Birkshawhead, Lockerbie.

Steers sold to £1360 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Weal, Birkshawhead.

A Simmental bull from Hindmarsh Partners, Warkshaugh, led the among the weaned cattle, selling for £1290. Limousins dominated both the heifers and steers peaking at £1025 and £1020 from Sarkshields and North End respectively.

The sale of 420 calves, again exceeded expectations with 127 heifer calves averaging £311.50 and 293 bull calves levelling at £260.

Top price was £640 paid for a Limousin bull calf from Messrs Bowness and Spedding.

Just short of 300 store cattle were forward for Hope’s Auctioneers sale, where a Limousin cow with Limousin heifer calf from Messrs Irving, Birkmire, topped at £1900.

Feeding bulls met a strong trade, peaking at £1505 for a Limousin from DA Harrison, Hill House.

Store cattle again came from DA Harrison, Hill House with a Limousin heifer, which sold for £1515, whilst steers peaked at £1385 for another of the same breed this time from Bankhead.

A strong trade was met at Harrison and Hetherington’s store cattle sale, reaching £1280 for a Charolais bullock from Meigle, and top pence per kg was 236p paid for a Limousin from Grahamslaw.

Among the heifers it was another Charolais from Meigle, that topped at £1250, whilst British Blues from Burnhead, peaked at 232.4p.

Aberdeen-Angus from Creagraineach, dominated the top price per head at Craig Wilson’s sale of 329 store cattle and beef bulling heifers, selling to £1430 and £1290 for bullocks and heifers respectively.

Leading the pence per kg section was a Limousin heifer from Glendoune, selling to 261.8p, whilst bullocks attained 242.8p for Aberdeen-Angus from Portrye.

A buoyant demand was met throughout, with 153 bullocks averaged 215.1p, and 134 heifers levelling at 210.7p.

A strong entry for the time of year sold to a buoyant trade at Mitchells Auction, heading up the store trade today was an Aberdeen-Angus steer from RS and E Gate, Near Branthwaite Edge.

Heifers reached £1145 for a Limousin from BW Noble, Gibbtarn, whilst young bulls peaked at £1025 for a Limousin bull from EJ and RJ Wear, Howe Green.

Hexham and Northern Marts held their weekly sale of store cattle and trade maintained last week’s high rates with the better end of heifers dearer on the week.

More Limousin crosses also topped the steers at £1135 from Horseholme.

Texel ewes from AG and D Bissett, Middle Dukesfield, peaked at £129 per head, whilst store hoggs sold to £89 from J Proctor, New Dotland.

United Auctions sale of store cattle witnessed a strong trade, with bullocks and heifers averaging 204.7p per kg and 227.6p respectively.

A British Blue cross from Mid fodderletter, Tomintoul, led the way among the heifers selling to 290p per kg, and Aberdeen-Angus crosses from East Murkle, Castletown, reached £1020.

Among the bullocks it was 395kg Beef Shorthorn crosses that topped at 229p per kg from Westfield of Ardoyne, Insch, and to £1050 for a 510kg Charolais from Ernam, Strathdon.

Bulls sold to 210p per kg from Westfield of Ardoyne, Oyne, and top per head was £1150 for a 580kg Charolais from Ernam, Strathdon.

A buoyant demand was met at Penrith Auction Mart fortnightly sale of 102 store cattle, with a top price of £1365 being achieved for a Limousin cross bullock from Williamson Bros, Ulverston.

Heifers were short of requirements, topping at £1255 for a Limousin from Far Close Farm, whilst store bulls peaked at £985 for a Hereford from the Slack Farm Cottage.

On Monday, Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of cast, breeding and store cattle, where a 100% clearance rate was achieved resulting in steers averaging £931, heifers £944 and young bulls £822.

A Simmental steer from Fristling Hall topped the sale at £1440, whilst the leading heifer, also a Simmental, pealed at £1330 from the same home.

Among the breeding cattle, it was a Limousin cow with her bull calf that led the way at £1550 from Whitwell Farms.
