Carlisle

At Borderway Mart, Harrison and Hetherington’s weekly sale of store and weanling cattle, had well in excess of 450 head forward, where steers levelled at £1047.96 and heifers at £1005.15.

Top overall price was £1510 paid for a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Barnes, Hutton Roof, Penrith.

Heifers peaked at £1380 for another Limousin cross from Messrs Jones, The Croft, Carlisle.

The 285 calves reached at top of £575 for a Limousin bull from G and SE Fox, Windy Hill.

The firm’s beef breeding sale on the Friday saw 180 cows and heifers with calves at foot forward, where a run of Charolais females with calves from WP Bruce, Balmyle, sold to £3000 twice. First was a cow and heifer calf, with a heifer and heifer calf making the same money.

A strong show of cattle met a firm trade at Dingwall and Highland Marts’ 17th anniversary of 1791 store cattle, where averages were well up on the year, with 1007 bullocks and 777 heifers balancing out at 240.5p (+29.2p) and 230.0p (+27.3p) respectively.

Bullocks were topped at 410.3p per kg and £1600 per head for a 390kg Limousin cross sold in aid of Cancer Research kindly donated by the estate of the late R. McCrae, Culmill, Kiltarlity and purchased by B Gilvear, Graystale, Stirling.

A 430kg British Blue cross from Invercharron, Ardgay, made at 348.8p and £1500.

Young bulls (seven) averaged 194.5p having sold to 230.1p for a 365kg Limousin cross from Invercharron, and to £1270 for a 750kg Charolais from Forsie, Westfield.

A 315kg Limousin cross heifer topped the 144 heifers at 241.30p for Blairmulloch, and two sold for £1215 per head. First was a 574kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Bougang with a 604kg Charolais cross from Gatehead, also making £1215. Heifers levelled at 207.16p per kg.

Angus cross bullocks sold well at £1270 and £1260 from Dennis Burn, Aydonshield, Hexhamshire.

A Texel ewe from C and C Farming, Flotterton Cottage, topped the sheep selling at £130.

On Monday, Penrith and District Farmers’ Mart held their beef breeding cattle sale, where cows and calves peaked at £3000 for a Limousin cow with a British Blue heifer calf at foot, from R Hall and Son, Inglewood Edge.

A British Blue cow with bullock calf at foot, from Messrs Stamper, Long Meadows, Blencarn Hall, made £2750. The same home also sold the lead priced bull, a six-year-old Limousin at £5100.

Also forward were 110 store cattle, which sold to £1365 for a Limousin heifer from R Hall and Son, Inglewood Edge.

On Tuesday, C and D Auction Marts held their first store lamb sale, where Beltex crosses topped the trade selling at £98 per head for JR and CJ Ward, Whitstonehill, Lockerbie.

An overall sale average of £74.37 was achieved, being £12 up on the year.

A small entry of store cattle peaked at £1040 for Belted Galloway bullocks from CT and J Wigham and Sons, Hethermill, Kirklinton.

A large show of store cattle for the time of year met the dearest trade for some time at Wallets Marts’ fortnightly sale of store cattle.

Steers sold to £1340 for Charolais from Howthat, and to 280.3p per kg for Limousins from Herries.

Charolais also topped the heifers at £1200 from Ballinnie, with others from the same home making 246p.

On Tuesday, Harrison and Hetherington held their fortnightly sale of store cattle, which met a buoyant demand.

Bullocks were topped at £1265 per head for a British Blue cross from Messrs Wilson, Belzies, and to 230p per kg for Charolais from Messrs Justenlees.

Messrs Wilson, Belzies also topped the heifers attaining £1160 and 231p per kg for pens of Limousin crosses.
