A summary of the 13 most popular store sales throughout the country, make sure and catch up on the trade at your local market. 

Carlisle

At Borderway Mart, Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of store and weanling cattle, where Charolais cross bullocks topped the trade at £1455 for Messrs Johnstone, Westray.

Topping the heifer section were Limousin cross heifers at £1350 from Messrs Bowman Croft House.

A smaller show of weanlings forward saw bulls achieve some of the dearest prices, reaching £1265 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Lee, Langrigg.

Ashley Thom, Marks Farm sold the top priced bullock, a Limousin cross for £1085.

Heifers peaked at £940 for more of the same from West Hot Bank.

A 33% increased entry on the year amongst the store sheep saw averages up a massive £14.81 on the same event in 2019.

Top price was £100 paid for Beltex cross Charollais wedders from Messrs Thomlinson, Long Park, Carlisle, with their run of 36 lambs going on to average £87.83 per head.

Not far behind on £98 were Beltex from Greenside Keep Cottage.

Stirling UA

United Auctions sold 445 stores and 79 out of spec cattle, cast cows and bulls, where bullocks (201) and heifers (220) averaged 227.29p per kg and 217.22p respectively.

Bullocks sold to 252.80p per kg for a 360kg Charolais cross from Polquhairn, and to £1430 for a 688kg Simmental cross from Putechan.

More Charolais crosses topped the heifers at £1210 weighing 592kg from Pardovan, and to 247.20p for a 441kg Limousin from Gateside.

The firm also sold 5176 store lambs and feeding sheep at their opening sale on Monday, which reached a top of £85 per head for Beltex from Low Tirfergus.

Overall averages were well up on the year with Suffolk crosses levelling at £75.82 (+£11.59); Texel crosses, £73.08 (+£11.92); Beltex crosses, £71.39 (+£9.80); Cheviots, £60.00 (+£2.26); Mules, £73.86 (+£16.36); Blackfaces,£44.94 (+£4.94) and Cheviot Mules, £71.17.

Hope’s Auctioneers sold 38 calves and stirks at their weekly sale, where all classes met a buoyant demand which resulted in trade topping at £540 on three occaions.

Firstly for a British Blue bull from Messrs Young, Crummock Bank; again for a Limousin bullock from Messrs Hughes, Seaville, and finally for another Blue bull from Messrs Harrington, Flatt Bank.

Reared heifers reached £495 for British Blues from Flatt Bank.

Bullocks and heifers averaged 223.56p per kg and 217.26p respectively.

Topping the pence per kg were bullocks from Messrs Rutter, Greenhead at 242p per kg.

Heifers attained £1100 on two occasions both for Aberdeen-Angus from Branxholm Braes.

Trade was brisk throughout at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ sale of 552 stores including young and weaned calves and 10 breeding cattle.

Bullocks (292) averaged 221.2p per kg and sold to 292.7p for a 410kg Aberdeen-Angus from Sheep Park Farms, Bridge of Marnoch, and to £1425 for a 618kg Limousin from Wester New Forres, Rafford.

British Blues led the heifers (214) at 276.7p for a 430kg beast from Upper Forgie, Keith, and to £1440 for a 730kg heifer from Fairburn, Longmanhill, to level at 220.7p.

Bulls (29) peaked at 215.1p for a 358kg Simmental from Auchtertyre, Pluscarden, and to £1100 for a 590kg Limousin from Nether Knockans, Knockando.

Among the breeding cattle, it was an in-calf Simmental cows from North Towieturner, that led the way, reaching £1500.

Bullocks peaked at £1360 for a Limousin cross from Messrs McCaskie, Cornhill, and to 250p per kg for another of the same from Messrs Cruickshank, Little Kype.

British Blues from Messrs Murray, East Crookedstone, topped the heifers at £1215, whilst Limousins from Messrs Cruickshank, Little Kype, attained 260.9p to top the pence per kg among the heifers.

Bullocks peaked at £1370 for a Charolais cross steer from Robert and Kay Thompson, The Whins, whilst the heifer trade reached £1265 for a Limousin cross from Brian Charlton, East Newham.

The firm also sold 1367 store lambs, which were topped at £108 for Beltex crosses from A Scown, Wolsingham, Co Durham.

Texel crosses led the ewes at £106 on two occasions, firstly from Alan R Lawson, South Farm and from K Smith and Son, East Greenridge.

Bullocks led the way at United Auctions’ sale of 72 store and OTM cattle, attaining 247.8p per kg for a Limousin cross from Parrock, Rothiemay, and to £1130 for an Angus cross from East Murkle, Castletown.

Bullocks (39) and heifers (25) balanced out at 215.5p per kg and 205p respectively.

Among the heifers, 297kg Simmental crosses from March Farm, Bonnykelly led at 237.4p, whilst top per head of£980 was paid for an Angus cross from East Murkle, Castletown.

A large attendance of active buyers ensured all classes sold at beyond sellers’ expectations at C and D Auction Marts fortnightly sale of 254 store cattle, at Dumfries.

Charolais topped the bullock trade at £1240 per head from Netherhall, whilst heifers attained £1265 for British Blues from Kimmeter Green Cottage.

Bullocks and heifers averaged out at 221p per kg and 212.1p respectively.

A buoyant demand was met at Penrith and District Farmers’ Mart LLP fortnightly sale of 55 stirks and rearing calves, which attracted a good ringside of buyers.

A small but select entry was topped by a Limousin bull calf from Messrs Barker, Noran Bank, selling to B Atkinson for £550.

Young calves peaked at £270 for an Aberdeen-Angus heifer, whilst British Blue bulls reached £390 on two occasions from B and GC Donald, The Ling.

Black and whites dairy entries met a sharper trade and averaged £97 per head selling to £300 from DW Mallinson, Dacre.

Friesian and Holstein stirks achieving £280 from Low Moor Dyke.

The fortnightly sale at Caledonian Marts saw 329 store cattle forward where bullocks and heifers averaged 214p per kg and 209p respectively.

Bullocks attained 264p per kg for Simmentals from Keir Farms, Aberdeen, and to £1360 for Limousins from A McKenzie, Ardgate, Gartocharn.

Simmentals also topped the heifers at 230p from W McLean, Kilblaan, Campbeltown, and to £1160 for a Shorthorn from A and H Kirkpatrick, Strathmore, Beith.

On Tuesday, C and D auction Marts held their weekly sale of 3041 store lambs which achieved an overall average of £73.05 per head.

Topping the sale was a pen of Texel cross lambs from JF Latimer, Chapel House, realising £105.

Not far behind on £103 were Beltex from Chapel House.

The first draw of Mule wedder lamb sold to £74.50 from Messrs Reed, The Knarr.

Darlington

INCREASED numbers were forward for Darlington Auction Mart’s weekly sale, which saw a good number of all types of cattle and sheep forward.

Breeding cattle peaked at £2050 for a Simmental cow and British Blue cross heifer calf from JC Crust, Grange Farm, Lincolnshire.

Stores were topped by a Charolais steer from WO Grix and Partners, Hill Head Farm, Morpeth, at £1485.

A buoyant demand for store lambs saw averages rise £11 per head on the year to average £70.

Top price was £100 paid for a Texel from GH Lister, Holebeck House, Wolsingham.

Gimmers were much sought after and sold to £180 for a pen of Suffolk cross Mules from AE and F S Glaves, Brompton, Scarborough.

John Watson of Home Farm, Catterick also dispersed his Lleyn flock, which saw 123 ewes average £118 with a top price of £150.

Breeding sheep met a flying trade throughout with a pair of Texel ewes from Eugene Walsh, Francis Street, Stanley topping the trade at £230 apiece.
