Well fleshed cattle and in particular heifers drew a huge premium at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly store sale where prices peaked at £1410 for a Limousin heifer from Messrs Watson, Parcelstown, Longtown.

Bullocks sold to £1385 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Bowman, Croft House, Penrith.

Weaned cattle attained £1370 for a Limousin cross bull from Messrs Cooper, Hallmoor, whilst more of the same topped the bullocks at £1150 from Messrs Crowther, Spittalriddinghill, with heifers to £1120 for Aberdeen-Angus from Messrs Graham and Son, Barnglies.

A smaller show of 263 calves, reached £585 for a Limousin suckler-bred bull calf from Messrs Wilson, Ayr.

A smaller show of store lambs on Monday sold to £94 for Beltex from TW and M Bird, Ghyll House Farm, Wreay.

Texels topped the sale at £90 from Airdens, Bonar Bridge, whilst Cheviot ewe lambs attained £84.00 from Burnbank, Isle of Canna.

The firm also sold 750 lambs from Lewis Livestock Producers, which averaged £50.46 and sold to £74.50 for Cheviots from North Shawbost, Isle of Lewis.

United Auctions sold 1156 store cattle, 35 breeding cattle 40 rearing cattle and 151 out of spec cattle, cast cows and bulls at their weekly sale.

Bullocks (628) averaged 218.81p and sold to 266.30p per kg for a 276kg Charolais cross from Corsencon, and to £1380 for a 610kg Limousin cross from North Woodend.

Limousin crosses topped the heifers (450) firstly at 242.40p for a 429kg entry from Old Leckie, and to £1290 for a 688kg animal from Wester Clunie, to level at 212.82p.

Young bulls (8) balanced out at 182.48p and attained 200.70p for a British Blue cross from Glen, and to £1260 for an Aberdeen-Angus cross from Mosshall.

The firm's inaugural sale of rearing cattle, hit £590 for a Limousin cross heifer from R Neill, Rossiebank, Dunning, whilst bull stirks sold to £500 for more of the same from from Messrs Hope, Nether Skellyhill, Lesmahagow.

The 7303 store lambs and feeding sheep sold on Monday saw trade peak at £93 for Suffolk from Ballymenach.

Store cattle met a keen demand, resulting on the heifers rising 14p per kg and steers up 18p on the year at United Auctions' sale of 375 store and OTM cattle.

Heifers (183) averaged 215p per kg, and to 246.4p for a 345kg Charolais cross from Hillhead of Stevensburn, New Deer, and to £1260 for a 560kg Simmental cross from mains of Tarryblake, Rothiemay.

Limousin crosses topped the bullocks (173) at 282.1p for a 195kg entry from Lynemore, Spey Bridge, and to £1490 for a 690kg animal from Parks, Rothiemay, to level at 221.1p.

Another sale to excel the previous years' average was the annual sale of breeding sheep at C and D Auctions, levelling at £168.85, a rise of £37.90.

Scotch Mules attracted the lead bid of £194 from Lawesknowe, whilst other breeds peaked at £188 for Texels from Nether Garrel House and Merkland.

Some 750 Scotch Mule ewe lambs also lived up to the demand averaging £115.43, +£28.24 on the year. Reaching £143 from Ashmark.

On Monday, Penrith and District Farmers’ Mart held their fortnightly sale of 246 store cattle with averages up £191 ahead on the year.
