No fewer than 21 bulls sold at or above the £3000 bracket at the Border and Lakeland bull sale at Carlisle, on Monday, where only six bulls left the ring unsold.

Top price was 5100gns paid for Annandale Ranfurly, brought out by Matthew Armour, Moffat, and purchased by Messrs Richardson, Appleby in Westmorland. This 16-month-old entry by Annandale Henry is bred from a Very Good dam that produced more than 15,600kg in her third at 4.29%BF followed by 13 generations of Excellent classified cows. His fifth dam was the Topmark Raider Rhapsody which was awarded 55 breeding stars.

A good line up of bulls from Annandale saw nine average £3231.

Second top price was 5000gns paid for Skirwith Hall Farms' Stowbeck Lighthouse, a 13-month-old son of Westcoast Lighthouse from Skirwith, Penrith. His VG88 Smokin dam gave more than 12,000kg at 5%BF and was followed by a further three generations of Excellent dams. Lighthouse sold with an impressive genomic proof to Messrs Telfer, High Branchal, Bridge of Weir.

A cracking entry of 14 Holsteins bulls from KJ and CS Wilson's Warnelview herd from Thursby, Carlisle, sold to a top of 4200gns to average £3400.

Tops here was Warnelview Nordic ET, a 15-month-old bred from the Ex97-7E SP LP120 cow, Warnelview Final Cut Nita and sired by Oh-River-Syc Crushabull. He heads up to Inverness-shire with Messrs Innes and Sons, Nairn.

Nita, the dam continues to milk in her eighth, with many of her lactations testing over 5%BF. She was also the dam of four bulls at the sale that averaged just shy of £4000 with another Sandy-Valley Challenger son selling for 4000gns to Messrs Davies, Abergele, Conwy.

Two other bulls from the Wilsons made 4000gns to include Warnelview Rustic, a yearling by Sandy-Valley Challenger, purchased by Messrs Burrough, Cockermouth, Cumbria. His dam, a home-bred VG87-3yr classified cow, is backed by six successive Excellent classified females.

And, Warnelview Rico ET, a June 2019-born son of Croteaum Lesperron Unix bred from five successive generations of Ex cows sold for the same money to Messrs Todd, Penrith.

British Friesians also peaked at 4000gns for the Brocket family's Winnoch Kentucky from Kilbarchan, Glasgow. Bred from the successful Penguin cow family, this 26-month-old son of Winnoch Counsellor was knocked down to Messrs Jones, Peniel, Carmarthen.
