No fewer than 46 animals sold for £2000 or more at the October Monthly Dairy Day sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, where some 248 head of cattle sold to a top price of £2600.
Sale leader was a Kingpin Phantom-sired heifer in milk from Richard Livingston's Kirtlevane herd from Gretna, purchased by E Cow Holsteins. She is bred from a Superstyle dam and sold giving 36kg per day.
Mr Livingtson, who sold nine heifers to average £2077, also sold the second top priced lot at £2450, another fresh heifer this time by Crasdale Bankroll, to Messrs Innes, Drumduan, Nairn, Inverness.
Balcurvie Holsteins, Fife, sold 15 heifers to average £1991 with a top price of £2350 paid for a De-Su Syracuse daughter bred from a McCutchen dam. She was bought by Messrs Long, Ulverston. A Unix daughter from the same home made £2300.
The Wilson family from Woodside Farm sold 14 cows and heifers to average £2110. They also topped the cow trade at £2200 with a daughter of Warnelview Byron giving almost 60kg, while several heifers from the farm made £2250 for daughters of Shamrock, Halogen and AltaCornell.
A milky group of 19 Jersey cross bred heifers from West Thornber, in Yorkshire averaged £1865 having sold to £2050 on several occasions, and a group of late lactation or dry cows due in the New Year from Crochmore Farms, were topped at £1650 for a Regancrest Beau daughter, due with an Angus calf.
In-calf heifers also sold well and to £1800 from Ed Wilson from Petteril Hill Farm.
Averages: 89 Holstein heifers in milk, £1970.00; 27 Holstein cows milk, £1785.71; 19 Jersey cross-bred heifers, £1865.00; three Jersey cows/heifers in milk, £1316.66; three faulted Jersey cows ¾, £750.00; 24 dry Holstein cows, £1168.33; 20 Holstein in-calf heifers, £1427.50; 17 Jersey in-calf heifers, £1123.52; 16 recently served Holstein heifers, £1090.62; seven recently served Fleckvieh heifers, £878.51; 10 Fleckvieh bulling heifers, £900.00; 22 Holstein Friesian bulling heifers, £780.45.
