A small selection of breeding sheep saw Texel ewes top the trade at £85 from Fairfield, while Blackface ewes made £50 from Ewelees and Blackie ewe lambs to £76 from Horseholme.

Bullocks met a steady trade at Caledonian Marts’ sale, having sold to 295p per kg for Simmentals from R Wainwright, Cliad, Isle of Coll, or to £1300 for Charolais from J Dunn and Co, Martnaham Mains, Dalrymple. They averaged 203p per kg.

Simmentals also led the heifers per kg when a pen from B McIntyre, Feall, Isle of Coll, achieved 235p or £1170 for Charolais from J Dunn and Co, Martnaham Mains, Dalrymple. Heifers cashed in at 200p.

Black and Whites sold to 180p from TM Drummond, Low Barbeth, Stranraer and £820 from R Watson, Thorngreen, Kinrossie.

Breeding heifers with calves sold to £1140 for an Aberdeen-Angus heifer with an Aberdeen-Angus bull calf at foot from DJ Watson, Ardnacross, Campbeltown.

Bulling heifers attained £1080 for a pair of Aberdeen-Angus’ from DD McEwen, Arnprior, Stirling, while in-calf heifers peaked at £1160 for a Shorthorn from A and H Kirkpatrick, Strathmore.

The 1467 store lambs hit £89 for Texels from W and E Cook, Balcachie, Girvan, with Suffolks from Balcachie topping the feeding sheep at £66.

Trade remained firm at Harrison and Hetherington’s weekly store cattle sale where a Limousin cross steer from Amy Wilson, Hardrigg Hall, attained £1430, while heifers peaked at £1360 for another of the same from Messrs Weal, Birkshawhead, Lockerbie.

Top price amongst the weaned cattle was £1035 paid for two pure Limousin bulls from S Wilson, Corby Hill, Carlisle.

Crowhall Farms’ run of calves topped the suckled calf sale at £920 with four nine-month-old Aberdeen Angus bullocks.

The weekly sale of 360 calves saw trade peak at £490 for an Angus Bull from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown.

On Monday the firm held their weekly sale of store sheep which topped at £88 on two occasions.

Firstly for a Beltex cross from Messrs Bell, Hensol, Mossdale, Castle Douglas, and secondly for a pen of Beltex from Robert Bell, Main Street, Cockermouth.

A top of £1110 was attained for a 560kg, Limousin cross from D MacKay, Howmore, amongst the heifers, or 291p for four 220kg similar animals also from Frobost. Heifers levelled at £690.03.

Store lambs were topped at £69 for Suffolk crosses from Torlum, while cast ewes achieved £55 from Doon.

In-calf to a Luing, a Simmental cross cow topped the breeding cattle sale at £2050 from Knowehead.

Three herd dispersals of breeding cattle also took place, with top price from the Neriby herd achieving £2300 on five occasions for in-calf Saler cows.

Top in the Glenmanna dispersal was £5800 for a Charolais bull, while the Queensberry herd topped at £2800 for a Saler bull.

A strong trade and demand was met by sellers at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ store sale where bullocks averaged 222.5p and sold to 269.6p for a pair of 382kg Charolais crosses from Rashenlochy, Drumoak and £1475 for a 698kg Simmental cross from West Sandend, Cruden Bay.

Amongst the heifers the sale cashed in at 216.1p and trade peaked to 294.6p for a 258kg Limousin from Balmadies, Forfar and £1310 for a pen of four 520kg Simmental’s from Sauchenbush, Echt.

Bulls attained a top of 235.4p for a 378kg Charolais cross from Burnhaugh, Netherley and £1080 for a 598kg Shorthorn from Gaskbeg Farm, Laggan.

The firm also sold 1659 prime lambs to average £66.37 and peak to £90 for Texels from Deanshillock,

A large entry of 82 store and cast cattle and sheep were forward from Caithness, Ross-Shire and Sutherland consignors with prime heifers topping at £1270.50 for a 770kg Shorthorn cross and 169p for a 700kg Shorthorn cross from G Campbell Ltd, Thurdistoft.

Bullocks sold to £1262.70 and 183p for a 690kg Hereford from D Nicolson and Son, 4 Sibster, Wick.

The sale of 30-48 month-old heifers peaked to £1295.25 for a 785kg Simmental from D and E Mackay, 196 Lednabirichen, Dornoch and 196p for a 620 Limousin from B Sinclair, Plocan.

The sale of beef cattle reached a top of 172.9p for a 610kg Charolais cross from Brabster Farms, Barrogill Mains Mey and £1390 for a for a 908kg Limousin Cross from ID Stewart, Reisgill, Lybster.

Cast bulls were keenly bid for and achieved £870 twice, firstly for a Simmental bull from W and J Coghill, Ackergill Mains and secondly for a Charolais from RM Mackay and Son, Greenvale, Dunnet.

The firm also sold prime lambs to top at £96.50 and 210p for 46kg Texels from AT Campbell, 5 Stewart
