A flying trade for the first store sale of the year through Harrison and Hetherington, saw 140 cattle sell to £1350 for a Charolais cross steer from Messrs Neve, Riggfoot, Brampton.

Heifers reached £1190 for Limousin crosses from Messrs Edgar, Woodhouse, Carlisle.

Weaned cattle started the year on a high note, with an Aberdeen-Angus bull from Messrs Wiseman, Pear Tree House, Penrith, coming out on top at £1030.

Weaned bullocks sold to £890 from Messrs Clark, Caton Street, Millom.

The first calf sale of the year saw 310 sell to £515 for two Aberdeen-Angus bulls from Messrs Vance, Balnab, Newton Stewart.

Heifers attained £445 for a British Blue from Messrs Martin, Tempest Tower.

On Monday, store sheep sold to £110 per head for a pair of Texels from Mess Dixon, Croft House.

Beltex from Walton Woodhead were not far behind, selling to a top of £106.

United Auctions sold 1129 store cattle, and 105 out of spec cattle, cast cows and bulls, at their weekly sale where bullocks and heifers averaged 224.41p per kg and 220.70p respectively.

Charolais crosses topped the bullocks at 268.30p per kg from Braendam, and to £1490 from Abbeymill.

Among the heifers, a top price of 258.10p was paid for a Charolais cross from Townhead, More, and to £1460 for a Limousin cross from Elmscleugh.

More than 1000 store and feeding sheep were also sold, where Texel hoggs hit £105 for Pitreuchie and Cretlevane.

Texel hoggs averaged £82.82, Cheviots levelled out at £91.82, Mules at £84.52; Suffolks at £89.50 and Blackfaces levelled at £71.23.

On Monday, Caledonian Marts had forward 231 store cattle at their fortnightly sale, where bullocks and heifers averaged 224p per kg and 206p respectively.

Bullocks sold to 264p per kg for Limousins from C Dick, Taylorton, Stirling, and to £1100 for British Blues from J Brownlie, Inchgall, Fife.

Limousins from Taylorton also topped the heifers at 246p, whilst Aberdeen-Angus from Goldenlea Farms, Gryffewraes, Houston, sold for the lead price per head at £1200.

Limousins from G and P Middleton dominated Hawes Farmers Auction Mart’s store cattle sale, topping both the steers and heifers at £1230 and £1200 respectively.

Heifers averaged £924.55 whilst steers levelled out at £1013.30.

Breeding cattle peaked at £2600 for heifers and calves from CT and JE Willoughby.

Darlington

Store cattle prices remained strong at Darlington Farmers Auction Mart’s weekly sale, when a top call of £1200 was received for a 21-month-old Limousin steer from J H Johnson, White Lea Farm, Roddymoor.

White Lea Farm also secured 16 of the top 21 steer prices.

Leading the heifers at £1170 was a 14-month-old Aberdeen-Angus from JC Thwaite and Son, Cragg Hill Farm, Lartington.

Young bulls achieved £1095 on two occasions, both from BA and C Pearson of Stainsby Hill Farm, Thornaby.

A roaring trade for store hoggs resulted in bidding surpassed the £100 bracket on no fewer than 30 occasions to produce a sale average of £94.

Topping the sale at £127.50 was three Beltex hoggs from Andrew Wilson of Calf Close Farm, Easington. The same home also led the trade for Mules selling to £101.
