The Lord family’s Hewgill flock from Kirkby Stephen, produced the three highest priced lots at the Bluefaced Leicester female sale at Hawes Auction Mart, staged alongside a smaller Swaledale event.

Leading the trade at £6000 each, were two ewe hoggs by the L7 Riddings. The first which was bred from a ewe by the old F52 Hewgill sold to Finlay Robertson, The Beeches, Crosswoodhill, West Calder, while the latter, out of a H45 Hewgill sired-ewe, headed home with William and Marian Porter of the Riddings flock from Reeth, Richmond.

Another Hewgill ewe hogg realised £5800 to RJ Shennan and Sons, Farden, Girvan. She is a daughter of the home-bred M39, bred from a ewe by the F52 Hewgill.

Topping the gimmer trade at £3200 was the best from WA and A Booth’s Smearsett flock from Feizor, Lancs. She is by the J30 Smearsett, out of a D15 Smearsett sired-ewe, and sold carrying triplets to the N1 Harkerside. James Taylor of the Lunesdale flock, Bradleyfield, forked out the cash.

Smearsett also took £3000 for a ewe by the F4 Low Tipalt, which was knocked down to Sandy Ainslie, Links Head. She changed hands carrying twins to the G11 Smearsett ‘Ted’.

Rosie Tennant, Low Bucker House, forked out £3000 for a gimmer from Ashley Caton, Otterburn, Skipton. She is a K12 Otterburn Lodge daughter, out of a ewe by the G32 Midlock, and is carrying triplets to the M4 Asby.

Next best at £2800 was a ewe from RA Busby and Son, the Harland flock, Marrick, Richmond, which found a new home with Jack Lawson, Hundith. She is by F1 Harland ‘Big Head’ and is carrying twins to L19 Smearsett.

Topping the Swaledales at £3400 was a gimmer from Andrew and Morris Skidmore, Flakebridge, Tebay, Penrith. She is by Oakbank Emerald and sold carrying a single to Buttrigg Viceroy, to Paul Brown, Oak House, Ravenstonedale.

Next best at £2600 was a three-crop ewe from Robert Hutchinson, Valley, Bowes, Barnard Castle, purchased by Neil Croft, Tranmire.

Top priced ewe hogg at £2000 was an entry from Robbie Hallam, High Birkwith, Horton-in Ribblesdale. This Gyhll House Jawbreaker daughter, sold to Millie Richardson, Ghyll House.
