Harrison and Hetherington had 1157 cattle to include store, weanlings and 330 calves at their weekly sale where a British Blue cross steer led the trade at £1465 for Messrs Rudd, Grassings, Wigton, whilst heifers reached £1350 for an Aberdeen-Angus cross from Messrs Harper, West House, Maryport.

Stirks peaked at £1100 for a Limousin bull from Steven Illingworth, Howgillside, with heifers selling to £1010 for crosses of the same breed from Messrs Mallinson, The Hill.

Calves were topped at £600 by three Fleckvieh bulls from Connel Farms Ltd.

On Monday, the weekly store sheep saw 314 hoggs average £90.50, with a top price of £125 paid for a Beltex from Messrs Todhunter.

All classes sold well at Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale of 1607 sheep, where old season lambs (972) and ewes (393) averaged £73.57 and £69.92 respectively.

Beltex ewes took the charge selling to £132 from Camultmuir, Kiltarlity, with the same home topping the lambs at £125.

Feeding sheep (44) sold to £82 twice, for a pair of Texel cross wedders from Englishtonmuir, Bunchrew, and for more of the same from Balnabeen, Conon Bridge.

Heifers sold to 286.50p per kg for a 342kg Limousin cross from Cairncurran, and to £1500 for a 550kg British Blue cross from Mains of Throsk.

A 299kg Charolais cross bullock realised 284.30p from Blairfad, whilst a 673kg Aberdeen-Angus from Victoria achieved £1490.

Young bulls (27) were topped at 257.40p for a Charolais cross from Woodside, and to £1220 for a Limousin cross from Muirhouses, to balance out at 240.60p.

A Limousin in-calf cow from Messrs MacIntyre, Glenehervie, topped the 68 breeding cattle at £2450.

The 829 store and breeding sheep sold to £160 for Cheviot Mules from Whitfield, whilst store lambs peaked at £117 for Suffolks from Willowbank.

On Tuesday, C and D Auction Marts sold 2831 store hoggs, cast ewes and rams, where Texels proved reached £140 for store hoggs from Sewell House.

Feeding ewes and rams were topped at £95 for Greyfaces from Thirstane Cottage, while the 1000 head of breeding sheep reached £230 for Texel cross ewes from Stephen Graham and family, Miller Hill.

Bullocks and heifers averaged 234p per kg and 243p respectively at Lawrie and Symington's sale of 204 store and breeding cattle.

Top price was £1425 paid for a 650kg Charolais cross bullock from Messrs Janoch and Sons, South Leckaway, and 285p per kg for 324kg Limousins from JH Garbutt and Sons, Sketewan.

Heifers realised £1300 for a 545kg Limousin from W McLaren, Muirhouses, and to 300p for 373kg Limousins from JH Garbutt and Sons, Sketwan.

Charolais crosses from RB Gunn, West Clyth, led the pence per kg sections at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale, selling to 284.4p for 320kg bullocks and to 266.6p for 332kg heifers.

Topping the per head section at £1335 on two occasions were 678kg Simmental cross bullocks from D Henderson and Son, Dunn Farm, and again for 570kg Simmental cross heifers from R and S Nicolson, Overton, Clyth.

Bullocks (246) averaged 239.5p per kg, whilst heifers (124) cashed in at 227p.

Texel crosses came out on top among the store lambs at £125 for AG Simpson, Cairnside, Oldhall, whilst feeding ewes and rams peaked at £116 for more of the same from Clachan, Mid-Clyth.

The February prize sale of 605 store cattle through Harrison and Hetherington, saw trade peak at £2900 for a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Whitaker, Bowsber, Clapham.

Steers reached £1475 on two occasions, for a 10-month-old Limousin cross from Messrs Huck, Sowerthwaite, Austwick, and for another of the same from Messrs Beckwith, New Hall, Barras.

Averages were well up on the year with heifers levelling at £1136.13 (+£203.70) and steers balancing out at £1104.96 (+£156.29).
