An black in-calf cow from Stephen and Rosemary Hunter, secured the lead price of 2400gns at an online sale of Highland cattle conducted by Aberdeen and Northern Marts.

The Highland Cattle Society’s 130th spring sale held in conjunction with SellMyLivestock, on Monday, attracted entries from all corners of the UK, as well as two lots from Germany.

In all 13 animals from well-known breeders sold to new homes, with the 2400gns sale leader coming from the Hunters fold from Barnhill, Allanton, Shotts.

Selling at this price was the six-year-old black cow, Subhlair of Hunters, a Gregor of Gray Brae daughter bred from Subhlair 26 of Brucefield. She is due later this month to Jurra 3 of Thaggnam, and sold dow to Wales with R Thomas, Windy Corner Garage, Pencader, Carmarthenshire.

Another black in-calf cow from the Hunters and by the same sire made 2000gns to M Waller, Blendworth House, Crabden Lane, Blendworth. Fiochag 3 of Hunters, out of Fiochag of Hunters, is also due this month to the Jurra bull.

Second top price was 2300gns given by DA MacIsaac, The Glebe, Hoy, Orkney, for Siusan Ruadh 36 of Craigowmill, from Ken and Eva Brown, Ledlanet House, Kinross.

This rising three-year-old heifer by Ruaridh 1 of Ubhaidh, is out of Suisan Ruadh 19 of Craigowmill – the champion Highlander and reserve inter-breed of the decade from 2010 to 2019.

The six bulls sold to a top of 2000gns for the two-year-old, Donal Ruadh of Tippetcraig from L Burns, Tippetcraig, High Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire. He is by Donal 2 of Culfoich, out of Katlin 1 of Hunters, and heads down to London with M Innes, 23 Studdridge Stress.
