A round-up of special sales from across the marts...

Carlisle

All classes met a strong demand albeit for a smaller entry at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale, which achieved an overall average of £1169, with bullocks cashing in at £1205 and heifers at £1141.

Messrs Stamper and Son, Rose, led the way at £1470 on two occasions, firstly for Aberdeen-Angus bullocks and again for a British Blue cross.

Among the weaned cattle, bulls topped at £1130 for a pair of Limousins from Messrs Fowlie.

Heifers sold to £1075 for a Limousin from Messrs Sherwen, Tarn How, whilst bullocks peaked at £890 for British Blues from Messrs Bell, Changue.

The weekly sale of calves saw 50 lots sell for £500 and more, with trade peaking at £600 for a British Blue bull calf from RJ Raven Ltd, Crookdake Hall, Wigton. Heifers topped at £545 for a pair of British Blue heifers from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown.

On Monday, the firm held their weekly sale of store and breeding sheep, which topped at £230 for Texel crosses and Mule in-lamb ewes from JL McMillan, Carse of Clary, Newton Stewart.

Dingwall

Rare and traditional breeds were in demand at Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale of 371, where trade peaked at £700 for a Valais Blacknose ewe with lamb from Inverlochy, Tomintoul.

A gimmer with lambs at foot from the same home sold for £620.

Dorsets from Smallburn Farms, Duffus, realised £220 for hoggs with lambs, while in-lamb hoggs peaked at £210.

The weekly sale of 1071 sheep of all classes, saw Mule in-lamb gimmers from Teanahaun Croft, Conon Bridge, top the sale at £146.

Two lots then hit the £136 price tag, firstly for Suffolk cross lambs from Tulloch Ard, Glenelg, and a cross ewe from Fiddlefield, Muir of Ord.

Bullocks and heifers averaged 243.63p per kg and 238.49p respectively at United Auctions sale of 1756 store cattle, native bred cattle, and young bulls.

Bullocks sold to 288.30p for a 366kg Charolais cross from Middle Coldrain, and to £1500 for a 680kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Elmscleugh.

A 382kg Charolais cross from Foregirth, led the heifers at 280.10p, and top per head at £1470 was a 672kg Simmental cross from Over Hill House.

Young bulls (25) averaged 211.94p and sold to 263.60p for a Charolais cross from Elmscleugh, and to £1195 for a Beef Shorthorn cross from South Brownhill.

Store sheep soared to £130 on two occasions, for Beltex and Texels both from Ballochgair.

Averages were well up on the year at Hope's Auctioneers' anniversary sale of store cattle, where bulls levelled at £1130 (+£185 on the year), heifers balanced out at £1174 (+£214) and steers cashed in at £1133 (+£190).

Bulls topped at £1455 for a Charolais from Judith Hunter, Bridgemill.

A Limousin cross from Messrs Watson, Cunningarth, took the top spot among the heifers at £1920.

More of the same breed topped the bullocks at £1505 for DH and ER Strong, Well House, Hesket Newmarket.

All classes sold dearer on the week at Craig Wilson's sale of 643 store cattle, where bullocks cashed in at 239.8p per kg whilst heifers averaged 235.8p.

Top price of £1500 was paid for a Simmental bullock from Ravenslie, and to 298.3p for Limousin bullocks from Little Airies.

A British Blue heifer from Gass, Straiton, hit £1420 and 286.9p.

Mules led the 221 store hoggs at £125 for J Rowney, Genoch, whilst Texels reached £116 from the same home.

Thainstone

Strong cattle increased in value on the week at Aberdeen and Northern Marts sale of 1395 store cattle, young bulls and young and weaned calves.

A 546kg British Blue cross heifer from Murza Farm, led the trade at 366.3p per kg and £2000, to level at 247.2p.

Bullocks sold to 306p for a 402kg Limousin cross from Sebay View, Tankerness, and to £1500 for a pair of 698kg Limousin crosses from Fairburn, Longmanhill, to average 249.6p.

Bulls (7) sold to 237.9p for a 412kg Simmental from Kincraigie Farms, Lumphanan, and to £1190 for a 596kg Limousin cross from Bridgend, The Bu.

Ewes with lambs at foot continued to be in very high demand at the weekly store sheep sale, with store lambs extremely scarce and meeting the dearest trade of the season so far.

Ewes with lambs at foot (58) averaged £73.70 and sold to £74 on two occasions, firstly for Cheviot cross four-crop ewes with lamb and half from Bankhead, Portlethen, and for Mule ewes with lamb and half from Mains of Craignell, Bridge of Don.

Texel crosses led the way in the store lambs at £146 from Newton, Tullynessle, and more of the same topped the breeding ewes at £130 from Blackhillock, Keith.

Breeding ewes and store lambs cashed in at £117.93 and £108.30 respectively.

Stores topped at £128 for a Shetland cross from Marion Peat, Greenhill.

The firm also held their fortnightly sale of 1059 store and breeding cattle, where a 402kg Limousin heifer from West Torphin, came out on top, selling for £1540 and 381.1p per kg.

Bullocks topped at £1490 for a 678kg British Blue from Laigh Cleughearn, and to 315.4p for 382kg Limousins from Wester Whitecastle, to average 235.8p, whilst heifers cashed in at 231.3p.

The annual March sale of 550 store cattle held at Penrith and District Farmers’ Mart met a flying trade, selling to £1700 for a British Blue cross Limousin heifer from WH Raine, Ravenwood Cottage.

This was closely followed at £1670 and £1600 for Limousin cross British Blue heifers from MTP and SD Wills, Fawcett Park, to average £1403.33.
