Gupworthy Spinach secured the top price of £3200 at the Longhorn cattle society online timed auction, staged through Harrison and Hetherington, Carlisle.

The three-year-old bull from Welsh breeders, G Woollatt, Gaer Hill Farm, St Arvans, Chepstow, is out of show winning genetics being a son of Gupworthy Onzlo – reserve national champion 2016, Royal Welsh champion 2016 and represented the breed in the Burke Troph. Whilst the dam Durham Nigella, is sired by Wellhead Endeavour. He headed south with David Sheppy, Taunton, Somerset.

Topping the junior bulls was the yearling, Blackbrook Eclipse from JW Stanley, Springbarrow Lodge, Swannymote Road, Leicestershire, when he was knocked down for £3000 to Tori Stanley, Derby, Derbyshire. He is a Blackbrook Baroque son, out of the Blackbrook Trapper daughter, Blackbrook Young Diamond.

First in the ring met no disappointment for M and S Horne, Berrydown Lane, Overton, Nr Basingstoke, Hampshire, when they sold Fishwick Phoenix for £2900. This six-year-old bull was bred by P Close, being a son of Fishwick Macavity, and out of Fishwick Firefly, which is by Linton David. Securing this lad was Goodman Bros, Worcester, Worcs.

Amanda Dixon, Maryport, Cumbria, forked out £2700 for Tanfield Quantum from D Walker, Newton Farm Cottage, Main Street, Huby, York. This February 2016 born bull is sired by Overdale Kungfu EX94, whilst the dam, Tanfield Keepsake VG85, is by Hambleton Hurricane.

The same transaction was completed for the top priced female, Newton Cheeky Moo Coo, when she was knocked down at £2000. This three-year-old heifer is a daughter of Stoke Juniper and out of the home-bred dam, Newton Whoopee, which is by Newton Storm. She sold with her January born steer calf at foot, being sired by Riverlands Quiz.

Scottish breeder, Zoe McDonald, Turriff, Aberdeenshire, went to £1900 on two occasions, firstly for another from D Walker. This February 2018 born heifer, Newton Creme De La Creme sold with her heifer calf at foot, another Riverlands Quiz offspring, Newton French Fancy. Creme De La Creme is sired by Newton Storm, and out of a Stoke Juniper daughter, Newton Xsara.

The second purchase of Zoe’s was Rooksbridge Coyote, from Maudlin Mill Farm, Bostal Road, Steyning. A six-year-old cow bred by N Young, sold with her bull calf at foot, Maudlin Vertigo, by Gorse Yukon. She is a Slough Merlin daughter, out of Piggingswood Lady, which is by Holcombe Gringo.
