A new society female record average of £3934 was attained at the recent Hereford Cattle Society’s spring parade and sale staged at Shrewsbury, which cleared at 93%, whilst bulls cashed in at £4027 and attained a sale clearance of 91%.
Topping the sale at 7200gns was the 24-month-old bull, Barwise 1 Samson from Carolyn Fletcher, Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria. Forking out the cash was Martin Jenkins, Appleridge, Gloucestershire. This Moeskaer Online 1444 son has a terminal sire and self-replacing indexes in the top 1%, and lies in the top 5% for growth, eye muscle and retail beef yield. He is out of Barwise 1 Grace K2.
Another from the same home, this time the 21-month-old bull, Barwise 1 Tamerlane BN 108 – by Barwise 1 Nabucco – sold for 6200gns to G and A Speed, Carhampton, Devon.
Haven Tarzan from EL Lewis and son, Dilwyn, Herefordshire, saw the hammer fall at 6800gns to Francis Elmore of Essmore Herefords, Co Louth, Ireland. This October, 2019-born, is the first son to be offered by the 2018 National show champion, Mara President and out of Haven Louisa 65th.
George and Sophie's Harveybros 1 Thomas-The-Tank
Scottish breeders, George and Sophie Harvey, Balfron, Glasgow, sold their best for 6400gns to JL Forsey, Bridport, Dorset. The 16-month-old, Harveybros 1 Thomas-The-Tank is a son of Normanton 1 Laertes, inter-breed champion at the Royal Highland and Royal Welsh shows, and out of Harveybros 1 Crocus N5. He sits in the top 1% for retail beef yield and top 5% for gestation and calving ease daughters.
Not far behind and selling for 6200gns was John and William McMordie’s Solpoll 1 Trooper, Co Down. This 18-month-old bull is a son of the 8000gns Solpoll 1 Perfection, and now heads to Gloucestershire with HA Colburn, Crickley.
Topping the lively heifer trade was Glenvale 1 Polly from TG, EI and EN Thorne, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, at 5200gns. An April, 2019-born, this Netherhall 1 OZ Daffy M024 daughter was sold served to Vexour 1 Palmer, and was purchased by HS and I Griffiths and partners, St Davids.
Another heifer from the same home was Glenvale 1 Polly 712, which realised 4600gns. From the same female line and paternal sister she was served in January to Fisher 1 Rancher R483 and headed home in the same trailer with HS and I Griffiths and partners.
On the same money was Dendor 1 Keepsake 22 from DE, ED and AL Jones, Caersws, Powys. This March, 2019-born, is a daughter of Bakgard 1 Keno 1178 which stood Royal Welsh champion in 2017. The heifer sold in-calf to Dendor 1 Moonshine which was the 2018 Royal Welsh and Royal Three Counties’ champion. Taking this girl home was J Porter of Whites Herefords, Bridgewater, Somerset.
Yearling heifer, Porton House 1 Sansa from Vicky Weller, Porton, Newport, achieved 4150gns being another purchase of JL Forsey. This Moralee 1 Rosco KS R9 daughter is out of Porton House 1 Poppy.
Next in the money was April, 2020-born Coley 1 Mynte 531 from Heather Whittaker, Halifax, selling at 4100gns to W Milner, Much Wenlock, Shropshire. She is by Moeskaer Vegas 1451 and out of Bondes 1 Mynte.
In the for sale only female section, every animal sold, and trade peaked at 2350gns for the 12-month-old, Newtoncroft 1 Jolly 418 from Newtoncroft Farms, Newton Harcourt, Leicestershire. She is a sired by Maxstoke 1 Rambler, out of a home-bred Solpoll 1 Hollywood daughter, and headed home with MA Quiney and SM Spears, Moretonhampstead, Devon.
