A British Blue cross heifer from Messrs Mason, Bank Farm, Penrith, led the way at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale of 1193 cattle, when selling for £1660.

Steers witnessed a top of £1640 for Limousin crosses from Messrs Hewertson, Lords Close, Maryport.

Trade was still sharp for the 304 weaned cattle that were also forward, where a Limousin bull from Messrs Graham, Heatherside, sold to £1390.

Bullocks realised £1065 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Mattinson, Burthwaite, whilst heifers peaked at £1040 from Don Shepherd of Smith and Shepherd, Glebelands, Appleby.

The weekly sale of 276 calves topped at £610 for two British Blue bulls from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown.

On Monday, the firm held their weekly sale of store and breeding sheep, where Beltex ewes and lambs from Messrs Paul, Greigsland, Lockerbie, secured the top price of £118 a life.

All classes of store cattle met a fierce trade once again especially grazers at Dingwall and Highland Marts sale, where bullocks and heifers averaged 266.7p per kg and 261.6p respectively.

Bullocks sold to 343.4p for a 265kg Limousin cross from Slattadale, Gairloch, and to £1450 for a 600kg Blonde cross from Penick Farm, Auldearn.

A pair of 290kg Limousin cross heifers from Slattadale, realised 282.8p, with per head peaking at £1750 for a 590g Aberdeen-Angus cross from Smallburn Farms, Duffus.

Young bulls averaged 250.3p and sold to 260.3p for a pen 438kg Limousin crosses and to £1260 for a 500kg Limousin cross both from Rovie Lodge, Rogart.

A small selection of breeding cattle witnessed trade peak at £4800 for a Limousin bull from Slattadale.

In calf cows sold to £1250 for Charolais cross from Badrain, Culbokie, whilst in calf heifers realised £1200 for a Beef Shorthorn from Upperton, Balnain.

Limousin crosses from Slattadale led the cows with calves section at £1900 for a bull calf at foot and £2400 for a cow with heifer calf.

Top price was £1560 paid for a Charolais bullock from High Kilbride, and to 314.4p for a pen of Aberdeen-Angus bullocks from Mossneuk.

Heifers peaked at £1470 for an Aberdeen-Angus from Little Ittington, and to 280.4p for Limousins from Knockgerran.

A small show of store hoggs sold at extreme rates, selling to £125 on two occasions, firstly for Texels from Ballikillet, and again for Suffolk from Smithston.

Trade was similar on the week with conditioned cattle numbers short of requirements at Aberdeen and Northern Marts weekly sale of 1518 store cattle.

Limousin cross heifers from Heads of Auchinderran, Keith, led the sale when selling to 505.5p per kg for a 366kg entry and to £2050 for a 436kg heifer, to average 251.5p.

Bullocks peaked at 322.6p for a 310kg Charolais cross from Dale, Stromness, and to £1590 for a 724kg Stabiliser cross from Fontainbleu, Newburgh, to balance out at 258.9p.

Bulls (15) sold to 257p for a 426kg Limousin cross from Milton of Finnercy, Echt, and to £1380 for a 670kg Simmental from Rashenlochy, Drumoak.

The firm also sold 1924 gimmers and ewes with lambs at foot, which averaged £79.90 and 151 breeding sheep which cashed in at £134.69.

Mule ewe lambs from Backmuir, Keith, topped the sale at £147.

The £120 price tag was achieved on two occasions firstly for a Texel gimmer with single lamb and for a Beltex ewe with single both from Bogiefeulach, Tornaveen.

In the Young Farmers overwintering competition Isla Brown, Commonty, New Deer, won both the highest daily weight gain at 1.55kg per day with a Limousin cross bullock bred at Fichlie, Glenkindie, and the highest daily gross margin at £3.33 per day with a Limousin cross heifer bred at Aldunie, Cabrach.

On Monday, Caledonian Marts had forward 613 store cattle including 40 organic cattle for their first organic cattle sale in accordance with SOPA regulations.

Organic bullocks averaged 290p per kg and sold to 312p for Limousins from J and D Roberts, Farmton, Strathallan, and to £1080 for more of the same from I and J MacLeod, East Uplaw, Glasgow.

More of the same breed topped the organic heifers at 300p again from Farmton, Strathallan, and to £1080 from East Uplaw, Glasgow, to cash in at 284p.

Some 573 conventional cattle were also forward, where bullocks and heifers averaged 260p and 246p respectively.

Topping at 321p was an Aberdeen-Angus from AJ and G Orr, Lawhead of Stobwood, Forth, and to £1440 for a Shorthorn from W Taylor and Son, Jawpark, Slammanan.

Heifers realised 299p for a Limousin from R and I Epps, Ardnave, Islay, and to £1290 for an Aberdeen-Angus from WJF Ramsay, Inshanks, Stranraer.

Bulls peaked at 252p and £1150 for Luings from R McNee, Woodend, Armadale, to balance out at 226p.
