A round-up of special sales for the week from across various markets.

Carlisle

A Charolais cross Saler steer led the way at Harrison and Hetherington weekly sale of 1228 cattle, when realising £1640 for Peter and Sophie Donger of Seawell Grounds, Towchester.

In the heifer section, a top of £1480 was attained by a Limousin cross from Messrs Baxter, Eden Bank, Carlisle.

Topping the weaned cattle was a British Blue cross bull from Messrs Mallinson, The Hill, Burgh by Sands, selling to £1300.

Limousin heifers from Messrs Brown, Housenrigg sold to £1190, with steers peaking at £1090 on two occasions, firstly for Charolais from Messrs Langcake, Isel Old Park, Cockermouth, and for a Saler from Messrs Strick, Overby House, Wigton.

The weekly sale of 367 calves saw a Limousin bull reach £570 for G and SE Fox, Windy Hill.

Limousin cross bullocks topped Dingwall and Highland Marts store sale, selling to 370.7p per kg for a 205kg entry from from Balmaglaster, Spean Bridge, and to £1500 for a 685kg bullock from Rovie Lodge, Rogart.

Bullocks (425) averaged 266.2p with heifers (433) cashing in at 253.8p, before selling to 352.5p for a 295kg Limousin from Raitcastle, Nairn, and to £1220 for a 575kg Aberdeen-Angus from Strathglass Farms, Cannich.

More of the red breed topped the young bulls at 286.3p from Pithogarty, Tain and to £1110 for a 475kg Saler cross from Dunain Mains, Inverness.

United Auctions weekly store cattle sale saw bullocks sell to 335.20p per kg for a 182kg Simmental cross from Knollhead, and to £1610 for a 765kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Meikle Carleith.

Bullocks (1038) and heifers (887) averaged 253.40p and 245.21p respectively.

A 339kg Simmental cross heifer realised 309.70p for Middlesteads, and a 658kg Aberdeen-Angus cross reached £1470 for Smeaton.

Limousin crosses dominated the young bulls at 257.70p from Pathhead, and to £1500 from Balquhadlie, to cash in at 225.73p.

Breeding sheep sold to £95 per life for a Texel hogg with a single Beltex lamb from Carroch.

All classes met a strong demand at Craig Wilson's sale of 485 store cattle, where bullocks and heifers cashed in at 249.6p per kg and 239.7p respectively.

Top price was £1570 paid on two occasions, firstly for a Simmental bullock from Ravenslie, followed by a Limousin heifer from Camrie.

Among the pence per kg section bullocks topped at 295.7p for Simmentals from Over Cairn, with heifers selling to 286.4p for Limousins from Craigbrae.

A small show of feeding hoggs and ewes with lambs at foot, saw hoggs peak at £139 for Suffolks from T McMillan, Eskechraggan. Mule gimmers with twin lambs sold to £248 for R Lammie, Creagraineach.

A monster show of 206 calves and stirks saw record high prices from start to finish, with the top price calf of £665 paid for a Limousin cross bull from A Brown and Son, Kirkhill, whilst heifer calves peaked at £595 for a pair of Limousins from Jack Craig and Co, Tannockhill.

Stirks peaked at £1180 for an Aberdeen-Angus cross heifer from Messrs Hugh Templeton, Old Land.

Bullocks sold to £1100 on three occasions, firstly for a Limousin from A Woodburn and Sons, Killoch Farm, then for a Charolais cross from Laggansarroch and finally for an Aberdeen-Angus bull from Laigh Drumdow.

All classes of 145 breeding cattle sold dearer again, topping at £2900 for a Limousin heifer with her bull calf at foot for Ballycurrie.

Among the bulls it was a Simmental from Langalbuinach that secured the top price of 2600gns on two occasions.

Thainstone

Cattle were sharper on the week at Aberdeen and Northern Marts weekly sale of 1720 store cattle, young bulls and young and weaned calves, where bullocks and heifers cashed in at 257.4p per kg and 251.8p respectively.

Bullocks sold to 340.1p per kg for a 294kg Limousin cross from Quoybond, South Ronaldsay, and to £1590 for a 654kg Charolais cross from Mains of Wardhouse, Insch.

A pair of 282kg British Blue crosses made their mark in the heifers when selling for 290.8p from Quoybond, and £1540 was paid for a 666kg Limousin from Layburn, Rendall.

Bulls reached 261.7p for a 428kg Charolais, and to £1255 for a 564kg Aberdeen-Angus both from Burnside of Whitefield, Forglen.

The firm also sold 2570 hoggs, gimmers and ewes with lambs at foot, dry ewe hoggs along with their rare breed pigs, sheep and goats.

Hoggs, gimmers and ewes with lambs averaged £68.64 and sold to £114 for Texel cross hoggs with singles from Haugh, Birse, whilst Suffolk crosses topped the dry ewe hoggs at £139 for Berryburn, Knockyfin, to balance out at £130.40.

Rare breed pigs (20) sold to 80gns for a Saddleback Sow from Easter Cardno, Fraserburgh.

A Valais Blacknose cross ewe lamb from Carn-Raineach, Applecross, topped the rare breed sheep and goats (179) at 230gns.

Mule gimmers with twin Suffolk lambs from TW Fawcett, Little Blencowe, sold to £100.

The firm also held their fortnightly sale of 216 rearing calves and stirks, topping at £820 for Limousin bullocks from A and W Johnston, White Fold.

A 205kg Simmental cross heifer from Ritchies Croft, Brawlbin, realised 312.2p, and top per head at £1240 was paid for a 519kg Charolais cross from Norland, Lybster, for heifers to cash in at 247.1p.
