A good solid demand for bulls ready to work ensured a sound trade with increased averages for all breeds at United Auctions' two-day pedigree beef event at Stirling.

While the Charolais breed again secured the lead average of £5615 for 21, it was a Beef Shorthorn bull that attracted the lead price of 10,000gns from Robert Taylor, buying on behalf of Aucheneck Estates, Killearn, Glasgow.

Taking top dollar was Coxhill Napoleon, a two-year-old polled, roan from Lucinda Townsend's 70-cow herd from Coxhill, Moffat. Backed by home-bred genetics on both sides from her husband, Derek Steen's Ballylinney herd, Napoleon is by Ballylinney Glenn, a bull that was originally sold for 18,000gns and was bought back, and bred from the Croxtonpark Orville-sired Ballylinney Miss Ramsden, an Ex90-classified cow.

The couple also sold the second highest priced Shorthorn at 5000gns in Coxhill Neptune, a 23-month-old red horned bull by the 20,000gns Millerston Kasper, out of Coxhill Urymaid, a cow whose first calf made 4500gns at Stirling last year. The buyer was J Macadam, Callendoune Farm, Helensburgh.

Second top price was 9500gns paid twice – for a Charolais and a Simmental.
