Some 628 prime sheep were forward for sale at Craig Wilson Marts, where 56 spring lambs sold to average 320.6p and peak at £157 for Suffolks from A and T Wilson, Baryerrock, with more of the same from JT and SA Cannon, Redbrae topping per kg at 348.8p.

The 370 hoggs levelled at 292.9p and reached a top price of 328.3p for Charolais from JI and F McCall, Brigton or to £156 for Texels from A and J Wright, Traboyack.

The cast sheep were led at £185 for a pair of Texels from J and J Campbell, Dinnans, whilst £140 was paid for the top tup being consigned from C Harker, Chippermore.

Wooler

All classes were dearer on the week at Harrison and Hetherington’s sale of 545 prime sheep, where the hoggs cashed in at285p and top at £170 and 324p for a Texel from New Heaton.

Cast ewes sold to £175 for a Texel from C McAlpine, Auchencrow Mains, while the ram trade was dominated by more of the same from Barmoor Red House at £149.

Cockermouth

The trade for prime cattle enjoyed a flying trade, with heifers attaining a top price of 194p and £1191.16 for a Limousin from Hayborough.

Among the steers, a Limousin from Allerby Hall sold to 250p or £1407.50.

Limousins also led the cast cows, topping at 210p and £1457.40 from Parkhouse Farm.

The 102 spring lambs forward achieved a top price of £179.50 on three occasions, twice for Texels from JD Hetherington, Blue Dial, Allonby and then again for Texels from EPM Lawson, High Boonwood, Gosforth. Top per kg was 387.2p twice for Texels again from EPM Lawson, High Boonwood.

Hoggs met a dearer trade on the week, attaining £155.50 for Texels from G Gate, Hollins Farm, Eaglesfield or to 357.7p from New Hall Farm, Dearham.

Top price among the cast sheep was £202 for a Texel ewe from AJ Wood, Woodhall Brow, Dean.

Forfar

Limousins led the trade at Lawrie and Symington’s sale of 18 cattle, where bullocks (5) and heifers (13) balanced out at 257p per kg and 260p respectively.

Bullocks topped at 276p for a 580kg Limousin from Pityot or to £1632.80 for a 628kg Limousin from Nethermyres, while heifers attained 287p for a 542kg Limousin from Woodhead of Mailer and to £1638.56 for a 616kg Limousin from the Gask.

The spring lambs levelled at 328p and sold to a top of £176 and 382p for Suffolk crosses from Upper Tulloes, while the 173 hoggs attained a top price of 337p for Beltex from Newton of Fotheringham and £167 for Texels from Torrax, to average 281p.

Huntly

United Auctions sold 1433 prime sheep, where new season lambs averaged 317p and sold to 340p for 44.7kg Texel crosses from Meikle Begshill, Drumblade or to £152 for 44.7kg Texel crosses from Meikle Begshill, Drumblade.

The 977 hoggs cashed in at 275p and achieved a top price of 313p for 40kg Beltex from 52 Conval Street, Dufftown and to £152 for 72kg Texels from Dunscroft, Huntly.

Ewes sold to a top of £152 for Suffolks from Cranna Bridge.

Stirling (Cale)

All classes met a firm trade at Caledonian Marts’ sale of 140 prime cattle, where bullocks sold to 270p on two occasions for Limousins from J Walker, Pathhead, Dunbar and A Kennedy and Sons, Seggarsdean, Haddington or to £1764 for a Limousin from DS and RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Muthill, to level at 244p.

Heifers topped at 278p for a Limousin from M Orr and Sons, Penston, Macmerry or to £1732 for a Limousin from J Collier and Sons, Dullomuir, Fife, to cash in at 257p.

OTM’s averaged 153p and made 198p or £1560 for a Limousin from W Dandie and Sons, Learielaw, Broxburn, while dairy types cashed in at 118p and sold to 159p and £1190 from WA Hume, Easter Clune, Dunfermline.

Cast males achieved a top price of £1210 for an Aberdeen-Angus from J and J Findlay, Kilbride, Islay.

The firm also sold 1057 prime sheep, with 65 spring lambs balancing out at 337p and an SQQ of 373p, and led by a Suffolk cross from RA Campbell and Son, Meikle Seggie, Milnathort at 414p. Top per head was taken by DS and RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Muthill at £185 for a Beltex.

A buoyant trade was welcomed in the prime hogg ring, averaging 270p and peaking at 309p and £160 for a pen of Texels from S and JE Andrew, Letter, Dunkeld.

Some 443 cast sheep topped at £159 for Texel cross ewes from AM Connon and Sons, Skilmafilly, Ellon, Aberdeenshire, while rams attained £156 for a Texel from S Greenhill, Leuchars Lodge, Fife.

Stirling (UA)

At United Auctions’ sale of 5427 sheep, Easter Ochtermuthill and Hill of Errol led the new season lamb trade at £168 and to 388p for Texels respectively, while old season lambs witnessed Cuiltburn top at £166 and 365p for Beltex.

Texels proved popular among the cast sheep, realising a top of £201 from Hill of Errol, while the ram trade peaked at £160 for Texels from Muirside of Kinneddar.

Thainstone

Aberdeen and Northern Marts sold 22 bullocks to averaged 233.3p and attract a top price of 249p for a 625kg Charolais cross from Nether Mains, Torphins and £1709.40 for a 770kg Simmental cross from Faichfolds, King Edward.

The 21 heifers cashed in at 236.9p and peaked at 261p for a 620kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Mains of Dumbreck, Udny or £1666 for a 680kg Limousin cross from Hillocks, Whiterashes.

Also forward for auction were 55 beef finished cows to average £1351.36 and top at £1690 on two occasions, firstly for a 1026kg Simmental from Redhill, Mosstowie and also for a 922kg Simmental cross from Chapelford, Buckie, while 55 beef feeding cows levelled at £1090.09 and sold to £1210 for a 602kg Simmental cross from Skail, Westray.

On the flip side, the 143 spring lambs were keenly bid for to average 304.1p and reach a top price of 391.3p and £180 for a pair of 46kg Suffolks from Davishill, Udny.

Among the 1877 prime hoggs, prices peaked at 333p for a pen of 44kg Continentals from Crichneyled, Fyvie and £159.50 twice, firstly for a pen of 60kg Suffolks from Auchaber, Corse and also for a pair of 63kg Texels from Newton of Greeness, Turriff, to level at 296.8p.

The 631 feeding ewes and rams sold to £191 for Continental rams from Clyne, Newmachar.

Longtown

At C and D Auction Marts’ sale, new season prime lambs sold to 414p or £174 for Texels from R McArthur, Lower Moor, Brydekirk to average 355.5p with an SQQ of 349.2p.

The 4467 hoggs balanced out at 308p with an SQQ of 313.6p having sold to 393p for a pen of 18 Beltex from RL and AR Phillips, Fir Trees, Harrogate, or to £212 for Suffolks from S Sinclair, Haven View, Wick.

The 3326 ewes were topped at £202 for Texel ewes from L Skelton, Low House, Dearham, while Texels also dominated the rams at £205 from J Thompson and Son, Farlam Hill, Brampton.

Lanark

Lawrie and Symington’s sale of 223 cattle saw bullocks sell to 265p from Messrs Dickinson, Brockwoodlees Farm, Canonbie or to £1650 from Messrs Taylor, South Arnloss Farm, Falkirk.

On the flip side, heifers peaked at 268p on four occasions from Messrs Dickinson, Brockwoodlees Farm, Canonbie or to £1765 from the same home.

A show of 90 calves and stirks peaked at £700 on two occasions, firstly for a pen of four British Blue heifers from Branchalburn and then for a Simmental heifer from the same home.

Beef bulls topped at £420 twice, firstly for an Aberdeen-Angus from Dykehead, and then for a Charolais from Northholm, while beef heifers peaked at £420 three times, twice for British Blue heifers from Hillhead and then for an Aberdeen-Angus from Dykehead.

The 49 spring lambs topped at £182 and 413p for Beltex from Messrs Hamilton, Mid Shawtonhill, to average 347p with an SQQ of 362p.

Prices for prime hoggs reached £172 for Beltex from Messrs Bell, Thethwaite and to 381p for more of the same from Messrs Cunningham, Walkerdyke, to cash in at 298p with an SQQ of 301p.

The large show of 1623 cast sheep reached a top price of £198 for Texels from Messrs Gray, Sunnycroft and to £114 for Blackface from Greyside.

Ayr

Craig Wilson’s sale of 1030 prime sheep witnessed spring lambs level at 365.7p and top at £175 for a pen of Texels off WHM and W Sloan, Mull of Galloway or 410.5p for a pen of Suffolks off the same home.

The trade for 586 hoggs was again sharper on the week with the sale averaging 295.4p and peaking at £158 for a pen of Suffolks off W Young, Skerrington Mains or 362.8p for a pen of 22 Beltexs off M Steveson, Balcaimie.

Among the 308 cast sheep, Texel ewes led the way at £180 from W Stevenson, Auchenflower, while tups sold to £138 for a Texel from Q Limond, Knocknaib.

On Tuesday, 133 prime and cast cattle saw heifers and bullocks average 250.8p and 250.9p respectively.

Top price of the day came from the heifer section at 283p and £1648.15 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Smith, North Boig, whilst bullocks sold to 259p and £1476.30 for a Limousin from Messrs Wilson, Carskerdo.

St Boswells

At Harrison and Hetherington’s sale on Monday, prices for bullocks peaked at 270p and £1647.36 from Lurdenlaw, while heifers reached a top price of 275p from Bee Edge or £1692.52 from Lurdenlaw.

Cast entries topped at £1867.32 from Kersknowe and 211p Brothershiels.

Spring lambs balanced out at 338p and topped at £175 for Texels from Thornington or 390.70p for more of the same from Birkenside.

Texels topped the per head trade among the hoggs at £201 from Roundabouts or to 363.60p for Beltex from Boghall, to average 298p.

The cast sheep topped at £167 for a Hampshire Down from East Fortune, while rams attained £155 for a Suffolk from The Lee.

Carlisle

Limousins proved the main attraction at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly primestock sale of 56 cattle, where the bullock trade topped at £1886.04 for a cross from Messrs Jefferson, Abbey Cowper, Wigton and to 254.5p from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, whilst heifers peaked at £1818.59 from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle or 261.5p from RVCM Agri, Airyolland Farm, Newton Stewart.

It was a similar story among the cast cows, with Limousins from Messrs Telfer and Son, Newton High House achieving £1893 or to 219.5p from Upper Brydekirk.

Limousins from Brow Top Farm led the cast bull section at £1809 and 164.5p.

A small selection of spring lambs were on offer, with Thethwaite Farm leading at £164 for Suffolks and 438.4p for Texels.

The 2045 hoggs cashed in at 305p with an SQQ of 312p, where the sale was topped at £189 for 52kg Beltex from Messrs McCune, Farewell Grange, Wigton or to 416.7p for more of the same from J Shepherd and Son, Low House, Millom.

The cast sheep topped at £200 a head for Texels for Messrs Shephard, Low House, Millom.

Dingwall

All classes of prime cattle were in demand at Dingwall and Highland Marts sale, where bullocks averaged 238.6p and sold to 241p for a 580kg Simmental cross from Poyntzfield Mains, Poyntzfield and £1440 for a 600kg Beef Shorthorn cross from Bridgend Farm, Dingwall.

Prime heifers also met a solid trade, levelling at 239.9p and peaking at 251p for a 485kg Limousin cross from Poyntzfield Mains or £1231.20 for a 540g Charolais cross from Bridgend Farm.

On the flip side, spring lambs cashed in at 272.2p while reaching a top price of 279.6p for a pen of 46.5kg Suffolks from 9 Lochussie, Dingwall and £132 for a 55kg Zwartble from Culnaskeath, Evanton.

The 227 hoggs were in demand, selling to 338.5p for a 39kg Cheviot from 5c Balnabeen, Conon Bridge and £144 for a pair of 50kg Beltex crosses also from 5c Balnabeen, Conon Bridge, to level at 284p.

Prices for feeding sheep remained strong this week, topping at £140 for a Beltex ram from Badrain, Culbokie.

Wigton

It was a flying trade for prime sheep at Hopes Auctioneers' weekly sale, where 13 prime lambs attained a top of £184 on two occasions for 40kg Texels from WL Musgrave and Sons, Cardew Hall and to 468.4p for a pair of Texels from the same home.

The 1184 averaged 354p with an SQQ of 370p, with prices peaking at £214 for a pair of 52.5kg Beltex from JP Mason and Sons, East Farm, Langton or 455p for a pen of 10 40kg Beltex from LW Aconley and Son, East Cawthorne, Cropton.

A small consignment of 46 cast sheep sold to £160 for a Texel from A Hudson, Hallbank, Wigton, while rams topped at £143 for a Texel from Messrs Brown, Seaville Cote.
