One of the largest shows of breeding sheep for this time of year through Penrith and District Farmers’ Mart LLP saw 5420 hoggs, ewes and gimmers with lambs at foot and yeld gimmer hoggs come under the hammer.

The event, which included the Troutbeck sale of Swaledale, Herdwick and hill-bred ewes with lambs, was topped at £165 per head by a pen of Texel cross Beltex hoggs from T and S Fawcett, Bustabeck.

Champion was a pen of 10 Mule hoggs with single Suffolk lambs at foot from the Winter family, Clickham, which went on to achieve £160 per head.

Swaledale ewes and lambs averaged £59.39 a life, selling to £80 a head for a pen of full-mouthed ewes with single Mule ewe lambs at foot from J Cartmel, Winter Crag.
