A round-up of special sales for the week, where trade remains steady across the country.

Carlisle

A Limousin cross heifer realised £2200 at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale of store cattle for Messrs Garthwaite, Wyseby Hill, Lockerbie.

Steers saw a top call of £1690 for a Charolais from Messrs Johnstone, Westray, Cockermouth.

The weaned cattle sold to £1095 for a Limousin bull from Messrs Dixon and Chappelhow, Westfield House.

Charolais cross bullocks from Messrs Langcake peaked at £1070, on the same money was a Limousin bullock from Messrs Ewart, Stone House, Wark, whilst heifers attained £990 for a British Blue from Rawfoot.

A slightly reduced show of 300 calves were also forward, however resulting in a dearer trade on the week in all sections.

Topping the sale was a British Blue heifer from Messrs Osborne, Silloth, selling to £630. Steers and bulls sold to £560 on two occasions for a British Blue steer from Messrs Little, North Greenhill, and from Messrs Preston, Wedholme for his Limousin bull.

Also forward this week were 150 head of high health beef breeding cattle, which topped at £3200 for Limousin cross heifers with calves at foot from Messrs Johnstone, West Wharmley, Hexham.

Bulling heifers peaked at £2350 for a British Blue cross from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan.

On Monday, trade remained firm for the sale of breeding sheep, which achieved a top of £166 for a Texel cross hogg with single lamb at foot from Thompson Livestock Ltd.

Bullocks and heifers averaged 247.1p per kg and 250.1p respectively at Dingwall and Highland Marts sale of 426 store cattle.

Trade peaked at 323.4p per kg for a 235kg Limousin cross from Polly Estate, Inverpolly, and to £1490 for a 616kg Simmental cross from Kincraig, Invergordon.

Aberdeen-Angus crosses weighing 291kg topped the heifers at 316.2p from Altyre Estate, Forres, and top per head of £1400 was paid for a pair of 607kg Simmental crosses from Kincraig, Invergordon.

The firm also sold 744 sheep of all classes, where trade topped at £172 for Cheviot ewes with lambs at foot from Milltown, Applecross.

Texel ewes attained £145 twice both from Kilmaluag House, Duntulm, with lambs selling to £134 on two occasions, firstly for Texel cross lambs from Strathmachie, Laggan, and for a pair of Cheviots from The Willows, Ardendrain.

Bullocks topped at 339.80p for a 206kg Charolais cross from Knollhead, and to £1620 for a 666kg British Blue cross from Torrax, to cash in at 239.40p.

Young bulls (29) averaged 241.89p and sold to 270.00p for a Charolais cross from Abbeymill, and to £1085 for a Simmental cross from East Merkland.

Breeding sheep sold to a top of £104 per life for Texel cross ewes with single Beltex cross lambs at foot from West Park.

Averages were well up on the year at Aberdeen and Northern Marts sale of 1666 store cattle, young bulls and young and weaned calves, when bullocks cashed in at 249.5p (+26.5p on the year), whilst heifers balanced out at 247.1p (+31.8p on the year).

Bullocks peaked at 343.4p per kg for a 332kg Limousin cross from Deerhillock, Birse, and to £1560 for a 670kg Charolais cross from Langlanburn, Deskford.

Limousin crosses from Auchernack, Grantown-on-Spey, dominated the heifers at 445.9p for a 370kg entry and £1900 for a 500kg heifer.

Bulls sold to 288.6p for a 246kg Limousin cross from Pittenkerrie, Glassel, and to £1220 for a 562kg Simmental cross from Caskieben, Kinellar.

The firm also held their weekly breeding sheep sale, where 2822 hoggs, gimmers and ewes with lambs and ewe lambs were forward.

Topping the sale at £152 were continental cross ewe lambs from Heathlands, Kinellar, which averaged £145.14.

Hoggs, gimmers and ewes with lambs at foot cashed in at £65.88 and sold to £123 for Mule hoggs with singles from Scarhill, Glenkindie.

A pen of Mule hoggs with lambs secured the top price of £160 at Mitchells Livestock Auctions, for Messrs Winter, Clickham, Appleby.

The same home bagged the champion ticket in the pre-sale show, with another pen of Mule hoggs, which later realised £135 per life. Reserve honours also went to Messrs Winter for a pen of Texel cross Suffolk hoggs which sold for £152 a head.

Ewes with lambs at foot topped at £124 for a Texel ewe with single Beltex lamb from I and G Lister, New Monkwray, Whitehaven.

The special sale of beef breeding cattle went off with a bang, when trade hit £3700 for a Limousin heifer with calf at foot from DJ and MJ Hoggarth, Old Hall, Broughton-in-Furness.

Bulling heifers topped at £1400 for a British Blue cross Friesian from Messrs Greening Ltd, Waverbank, Wigton.
