A 14-month-old bull from George Irving, Mountbenger, Yarrow, topped the sale of pedigree Beef Shorthorns at Longtown, selling for 3200gns.

Topping the sale was Mountbenger Paddy, a polled roan bull by Coldrochie Linton, purchased by Messrs Howatson, Gillenbie, Lockerbie.

Andrew Morton, Lochend, Denny, bought the lead priced female at 2700gns. This was Shawhill Lillian, a four-year-old cow that sold as part of the Shawhill Shorthorn reduction sale from Annan. Lillian, a polled roan, by Burnside Elite, sold with April-born bull calf at foot by Shawhill Maestro.

Mr Morton also gave 2000gns for the similarly aged Shawhill Lively, a Langalbuinoch Gallant daughter which changed hands with April-born heifer calf.

The seven-year-old in-calf cow, Galla Hayley Katrina, from James Frame, Little Galla, realised 1850gns to David Baillie, Calla, Carnwath.

In-calf and maiden heifers peaked at 1700gns for the polled entry, Hyndford Newtown, from Ian Tennant. The buyers were Messrs Meadley, High Bewaldeth, Cockermouth.

Commercial cattle entries included eight Galloway cross Beef Shorthorn heifers with Angus cross calves at foot from Borthwickshiels, Roberton, which sold to £1950 to Ashcraig Farming Partnership.

Averages: Beef Shorthorns – Four bulls, £2362; 12 cows calved or in calf, £1675; 12 in-calf and maiden heifers, £1250.
