A summary of special sales throughout the country for the week, with store cattle still slipping on the week...

Carlisle

Reduced numbers forward for Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale, saw trade peak at £1675 for Limousin bullocks from TB Stamper and Co, Rose Farm, Cockermouth, with the same home selling the lead priced heifers at £1560.

The 200 weanlings were topped at £1320 by a Limousin bull from Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, with the same breed from Messrs Johnston,, Horsemoorhill, topping the bullocks and heifers at £920 and £820 respectively. Also selling at £820 were Limousin heifers from Messrs Coulthard and Son, Davygill.

A British Blue from Messrs Wadsworth, Big Balcraig, topped the 312 young calves with another from the same home leading the heifers at £495.

On Monday, breeding and store sheep sold to £156 for Texel hoggs with lambs from Messrs Browell, Quarry House, who also sold the lead priced gimmers and lambs at £100 per life.

Dingwall

All classes of 471 sheep sold well at Dingwall and Highland Marts weekly sale, selling to a top of £170 for Cheviot ewes with Texel cross lambs at foot from Logie Farm, Muir of Ord.

A pair of Cheviots secured the top price among the hoggs of £128 for Ose Farm, Struan, whilst ewes peaked at £165 for a pair of Charollais crosses from Shepherd’s Cottage, Nigg.

Rams and feeding sheep sold to £168 for a Charollais ram again from Shepherd’s Cottage, Nigg.

Bullocks peaked at 285.40p for a 254kg Limousin cross from Catslackburn, and to £1385 for a 635kg British Blue cross from Stewarton, to average 240.49p.

Young bulls cashed in at 228.08p, having sold to 262.40p for a British Blue cross from Easter Greenhill, and to £1100 for a Luing cross from Harehead and Bothwell.

Limousins from Claire Drummond, Straid Farms, topped Craig Wilson's sale of 211 store cattle, selling to £1680 for a heifer, and to £1420 for a pair of bullocks.

Bullocks and heifers averaged 252.76p per kg and 233.51p respectively.

Top prices per kg were 334.6p paid for Limousin bullocks from Ballikillet, and to 292.3p for heifers from Barskelly.

On Tuesday, the firm sold 55 calves and stirks to a top of £490 for a Shorthorn bull calf from J Gilvear and Son, Graystale, or £445 for a Limousin cross from the same home.

Stirks peaked at £1060 for a Charolais from R and E MacPherson, High Wexford, with heifers attaining £740 for a Simmental cross from W Dalziel and Son, Common.

Just shy of 100 ewes and hoggs with lambs also came under the hammer, with trade peaking at £370 for a Beltex gimmer with twin Beltex lambs from S Gemmell, Burnmouth, Maybole.

Mule hoggs with twin lambs realised £228 from Messrs Dunlop, Glengennet.

Hoggs, gimmers and ewes with lambs averaged £72.89 at Aberdeen and Northern Marts sale of 1047.

Texel cross hoggs with singles from Pitprone, Glenkindie, topped the trade at £99 per life.

Among the 112 breeding cattle, it was a Limousin bull that led the trade at 3700gns for Brucewells, Netherley.

Limousins from Backfield, topped the females at £2600 for a cow and bull calf and to £2520 for a Limousin with heifer calf. Cows and heifer calves averaged £1941.43, whilst cows with bull calves cashed in at £1642.31.

Heifers with calves were topped at £2500 for a Limousin cross with a bull calf from Mill of Inverarity, Forfar, to balance out at £2158.52. Heifers with heifer calves attained £2450 on two occasions – for a Limousin cross again from Mill of Inverarity, and for a Luing cross from Caskieben, Kinellar – to average £2180.56.

In-calf heifers were topped at £1950 by a Simmental from Backhill of Seggat, Auchterless, with this section levelling out at £1721.71.

In-calf cows averaged £1466.67 and sold to £1680 for a British Blue cross from Seafield Park, Nairn.

Bullocks sold to £1245 for a 526kg Limousin cross from JC Orr, Baldastard, and to 259p for a 352kg British Blue cross from D and I MacKintosh, Kirkton of Kingoldrum.

Limousin crosses led the heifers at £1200 for a 504kg entry from W Stewart and Son, Newton of Inshewan, and to 263p for a 396kg heifer from CS Fleming and Son, Strone.

Averages improved across the board at United Auctions' sale of 241 store and 59 breeding cattle, where bullocks cashed in at 263.98p per kg (+10.25p) and heifers balanced out at 255.73p (+13.82p).

Limousin crosses topped the bullocks at £1155 for Achnaba, and to 309.5p from North Ardnaclach.

Heifers sold to £1000 for a Salers cross from Curacao, and to 326p for Limousin crosses from North Ardnaclach.

Breeding cattle peaked at £2200 for a Simmental cross heifer with heifer calf from Barguillean.

All classes of 2254 sheep sold well and to a top of £234 for Cheviot ewes with twin lambs at foot from Balephetrish.

Ewes with singles peaked at £180 for crosses from Dunans, whilst Cheviot gimmers with single lambs realised £180 from Kilvaree.
