A round up of special sales, where trade continues to remain strong throughout the country.

Carlisle

Harrison and Hetherington sold 807 cattle at their weekly sale comprising of 400 store cattle, 225 un-entered store bulls and weanlings, and 182 calves.

A Limousin cross steer led the way at £1650 for Messrs Irving, Thackmire, Wigton.

Heifers achieved a top of £1530 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Johnstone, Westray, Cockermouth.

Trade was strong amongst the weekly sale of weanlings, with bulls reaching £1240 for a Limousin from Messrs Evans, Halmyre.

Achieving £1335 were Limousin and Aberdeen-Angus bullocks both from Messrs Evans of Halmyre.

Heifers from Messrs Telfer, High House, made £1020.

A smaller show of 182 calves were also forward, where a Limousin bull calf from Messrs Wilson, Broomberry topped at £585.

Dairy bred calves were in strong demand with less numbers being present, realising £530 for Montbelairde bull calf from Messrs Beaty, Stonewalls.

A flying trade for all types of beef breeding cattle saw Blonde cows sell to £3700 and £3000 while Limousins with calves peaked at £3300, £3250 and £3100 at the firms monthly sale.

The entry of 220 lots was topped by a Blonde cow and calf from Messrs Kermode, Orrisdale, Isle of Man. Second top was £3300 paid for a Limousin heifer with calf from Messrs Myerscough, Sea View, Ulverston.

Bulling heifers peaked at £1430 for Charolais from Messrs Story, Heather House.

On Monday, the firm held their opening sale of store lambs, which cashed in at £86.

Top price of £119 was achieved on two occasions, firstly for Texel crosses from Messrs Mallinson, Rack Beck, followed by Beltex crosses from Messrs Walton, Goodie Hill.

Bullocks and heifers averaged 231.39p per kg and 227.53p respectively at United Auctions’ weekly sale.

Topping the sale at 302.00p per kg was a 202kg Limousin cross heifer from Gibblaston, and to £1285 for another of the same breed weighing 562kg from Middleton.

Bullocks realised 288.60p for a 272kg Hereford cross from Low Barbeth, and to £1500 for a 600kg Luing cross from East Doura.

Young bulls averaged 211.38p and sold to 238.70p for a Blonde cross from East Buchanty, and to £960 for an Aberdeen-Angus cross from Kinaldy.

The sale of breeding cattle achieved a top price of £4200 for a Charolais bull from J Wardlaw and son, Haughhead.

Closely followed at £2850 by a Limousin cross cow and calf from Walter Dandie, Learielaw.

A Limousin cross bullock led the way at Hope’s Auctioneers store cattle sale, when realising £1635 for R Miller Ltd, Arkleby Hall, Aspatria.

Heifers topped at £1385 for a Limousin from GF and JW Dixon, Bankhead, Wigton.

A British Blue cross topped the dairy bred bullocks at £1405 for Messrs Pigg, Dockray, Wigton.

Just 24 breeding cattle also sold well, reaching a top of £2100 for a Limousin cow with a Limousin cross bull calf at foot from RJ and JM Tudhope, High Parson Bridge, Wigton.

The same home also topped the heifers at £2050 for a similar outfit this time a heifer calf at foot.

A much smaller selection of calves was on offer at Craig Wilson’s sale, which sold to £600 on two occasions both for Aberdeen-Angus cross bulls, firstly from I and M Glasgow, Kerse Park, and again from George Aitken, West Whitefield.

The Aitken family then went on to top the heifers at £520 for a British Blue cross.

A Charolais steer came out on top for Mitchells Livestock’s store cattle sale, selling for £1255 for MJ and JE Graham, Lynedraw, Ireby.

The same home also sold a Blonde to top the heifers at £1235 for MJ and JE Graham, Lynedraw.

The opening sale of store lambs kicked off with a bang, when hitting £107 for Texel cross Mule wether lambs from JW Hartley, Low Priorscales, Calderbridge who also sold gimmers to £100.

Breeding cattle realised £1360 for a British Blue cross cow with Limousin calf from Nether Albie.

Among the store sheep, the sale averaged £84.14, achieving a top of £125 for Texels from Broomhills, Hethersgill.
