A summary of Special Sales for the week from various auction markets throughout the country.

Carlisle

Bullocks and heifers cashed in at £1215 and £1110 respectively at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale of store cattle, creating an overall average of £1170.

The sale topped at £1630 for a Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Beattie, Ratlingate, Carlisle, who also achieved the same price for a heifer.

Native cattle realised £1600 for an Aberdeen-Angus from Messrs Crichton, Rottington Hall, Egremont.

A much smaller show of weaned cattle were forward with a quieter ringside of buyers, selling to £1290 on two occasions both for Limousins bulls both from Messrs Knight, Stephney Farm, Seascale.

Stronger cattle were well sold with a run of cattle from Messrs Cadzow, topping both sections with Simmental cross heifers at £1105 and bullocks at £1090.

The firm held their weekly sale of 251 young calves, which witnessed a Blonde bull from Messrs Imrie, Harelawhole, top the sale at £560.

Dairy bred calves sold to £320 for Montbelairdes from Messrs Ramsey, Gillespie.

On Monday, a much larger show of store sheep were forward, which reached £129 for Beltex lambs from B Walton, Goodlie Hill, Great Asby.

Dingwall

Averages were up on the year at Dingwall and Highland Marts's sale of 1322 store cattle at their 18th anniversary, where bullocks and heifers cashed in at 260.3p (+19.8p on the year) and 249.4p (+19.4p) respectively.

The Judge, David Moir, Moir Livestock, Cairness, tapped out his overall champion in the show to a 15-month-old Limousin cross heifer weighing 435kg from J Munro and Son, Invercharron, Ardgay. David Moir backed his decision and purchased this heifer for £2300.

David Moir also took home the reserve champion at £1350. This one a 12-month-old Limousin cross weighing 445kg from I Grant Esq, Slattadale, Gairloch.

Out with the show, bullocks sold to 357.1p per kg for a 378kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Dounie, Edderton, and to £1540 for a 575kg Limousin cross from Woodend, Killearnan.

Young bulls (7) averaged 251.6p (+57.1p on the year) and sold to 288.5p for a 305kg Limousin from Corslet, Rosemarkie and to £1600 for a 580kg Limousin from Burnthill, Thrumster.

Stirling UA

Bullocks led the way at United Auctions' weekly store cattle sale, when selling to 277.50p per kg for a 382kg Simmental cross from Newpark, and to £1410 for a 627kg Charolais cross from Mains.

Bullocks (254) averaged 239.15p and heifers cashed in at 227.09p.

Charolais crosses dominated the heifers firstly selling to 276.30p for a 418kg entry from Mahaar, and to £1385 for a 654kg heifer from Mains.

Young bulls averaged 228.15p and sold to 232.70p and £1140 for Limousin crosses from Gateside.

Some 107 rearing cattle, topped at £785 for Charolais cross bullocks from Messrs Mitchell, Ardtornish, St. Andrews.

On the same day 233 breeding sheep were also forward, where Suffolk cross gimmers from Renton Home, achieved a top price of £198.00.

The opening sale of 6006 store lambs and feeding sheep topped at £104 for Suffolk from Low Craigton.

Texel crosses averaged £88.45 (+£15.37 on the year), with Beltex crosses cashing in at £87.39 (+£16.00). Suffolk crosses balanced out at £87.25 (+£11.43), while Cheviots achieved £76.00 (+£16.00). Mule and Cheviot Mules averaged £81.10 (+£7.24) and £81.64 (+£10.47) respectively.

A 660kg Charolais cross heifer led the way at Harrison and Hetherington's store cattle sale when achieving £1440 from Messrs Anderson, Headshaw, Lauder.

Top pence per kg among the heifers hit 245.2p for Salers from Edgerston Home.

Bullocks averaged 238p per kg, whilst heifers levelled at 226.5p.

Among the bullocks trade peaked at 259.4p for an Aberdeen-Angus from Earlston Mains, and to £1250 for a Limousin from The Lee.

Trade was stronger on the week at Craig Wilson's sale of 48 calves and stirks, where a top price of £500 was achieved for two Aberdeen-Angus cross bulls from A Dalgleish and Son, Drummullan.

The same home also topped the heifers at £430 with a British Blue cross.

Stirks realised £960 for a British Blue cross bull from John M Howie, Wellhouse, whilst heifers attained £820 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Gourlay, Cruise.

Bullocks and heifers balanced out at 239.9p per kg and 226.6p respectively at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' weekly sale of store cattle.

Topping the pence per kg section at 263.4p per kg was a 442kg Limousin bullock from Hillhead, Lybster, and top per head bullock was £1450 paid for a pair of 632kg Charolais crosses from Pittenkerrie, Glassel.

Heifers realised 258.3p for a 422kg Limousin cross from Mooness, Holm, and to £1670 for a 710kg Limousin cross from Fairburn, Longmanhill.

Bulls (21) sold to 235.9p for a 426kg Charolais from Burnside of Whitefield, Forglen, and to £1340 for a 678kg Charolais from Mains of Collieston, Ellon.

Among the small sale of 13 breeding cattle, it was a Simmental cross cow with heifer calf from Woodend, Muir of Ord, that led the trade at £1800.

Heifers peaked at £1260 for a pen of three 575kg Aberdeen-Angus from Overburns, or to 245.6p for a pen of two 344kg Charolais from Haswellsykes.

Dairy bullocks reached a top of £1040 for a pen of three 476kg Friesians from Carscallan, to average 196p.

The weekly sale of 1139 store lambs, witnessed a top call of £128 for Texel cross lambs from A and R Walton, Bank Top House.

Penrith and District Farmers’ Mart held their fortnightly sale of 116 rearing calves and stirks, where trade peaked at £750 for a Limousin bullock from R Hall and Son, Inglewood Edge.

More of the same breed came out on top among the heifers selling for £620 for Messrs Johnston, Skirwith Abbey.

On Monday, Caledonian Marts had forward 312 store cattle at their fortnightly sale, where bullocks and heifers cashed in at 224p per kg and 221p respectively.

Bullocks sold to 250p for Herefords from TM Drummond, Low Barbeth, Leswalt, and to £1430 for Limousins from I Methven, Cattermills, Croftamie.

Limousins from WJF Ramsay and Sons, Cardryne, Stranraer, led the heifers at 241p, whilst top per head at £1210 was a Simmental from D Mckenzie, Ardgate, Gartocharn.
