Special sales for the week witness trade dip slightly among the sheep lines.

Carlisle

The dearest trade to date was witnessed at Harrison and Hetherington's sale of 326 store cattle sale at Borderway Mart, where three sold for more than £1700, 10 more than £1600 and 24 selling for £1500 or more.

Sale leader came from a run of Limousin cross bullocks from Messrs Barnes, Hutton Roof, that made £1760, £1680 and £1650.

Tim Barron, Maunby House, Thirsk, sold his best at £1740 and £1630 for Charolais cross bullocks and £1620 for a Limousin cross bullock.

Limousin crosses also came out on top among the heifers achieving £1670 for Messrs Beattie, Ratlinggate.

At the weekly sale of weanlings, bulls achieved £1320 for a Limousin from Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields.

Steers sold to £1080 for a Limousin from Messrs Paterson, Low Three Mark, whilst British Blues were crowned the top among the heifers at £1105 from Messrs Ivinson Cooper House.

The weekly sale of young calves realised £570 for a Limousin bull from Messrs Ewing, Annan.

Heifers topped at £520 from Messrs Beaty, Stonewalls, for another of the same breed. The same home also sold the top price dairy calves at £395 for a pen of Montbelairdes for £395.

On Monday, the firm witnessed a smaller number of store lambs forward, with a top of £110 paid for a black Texel cross wether from Messrs Telford, High Park Foot.

Stirling UA

Bullocks and heifers averaged 240.69p per kg and 228.62p respectively at United Auctions' weekly of store cattle.

Limousin crosses from Helentongate, led both sections among the pence per kg, firstly with a 416kg entry topping the bullocks at 274p per kg, and a 524kg lot making 263.40p among the heifers.

Top prices per head, were £1560 and £1500, for a 864kg Charolais cross from Carscreugh, and the latter being paid for a 704kg British Blue cross from Drumbuie.

Aberdeen-Angus crosses from South Carse of Coldoch, dominated the young bulls at 236.60p and £1190, to cash in at 215.91p.

Texels from Duntuim, led the way at United Auctions' sale of 6139 store lambs, selling to £100.50.

Averages were up across the board, with Texels and Beltex cashing in at £82.02 (+£11.28 on the year) and £82.91 (+£8.86). Suffolk crosses levelled at £83.41 (+£11.89), whilst Cheviots made £79.50 (+£10.69). Mules achieved an average of £78.15 (+£12.78) whilst Cheviot Mules and Lleyns balanced out at £79.69 (+£9.19) and £74.73 respectively. Blackface sheep averaged £48.56 (+6.56).

Wigton

A flying trade throughout for all classes stock at Hope's Auctioneers weekly sale of store cattle, saw trade peak at £1695 for a black Limousin bullock from Messrs Barnes, Hutton Roof, Mungrisdale.

A British Blue led the way amongst the heifers at £1445 from DW and TA Bell, High Dyke, Catterlen.

Dairy-bred bullocks were topped at £1435 for a 20-month-old British Blue from DG and JA Bell, Low Blaithwaite, whilst dairy bred heifers achieved £1285 for a British Blue from Ian Grainger, Kiln Close.

Top price amongst the breeding cattle, was £2850 paid for a British Blue heifer with a Limousin bull calf from JE Studholme and Son, Nealhouse, Cardewlees.

A seven-year-old Simmental cow with Limousin bull calf received £1780 for TA Byers, Ellenbank, Boltongate.

The first sale of the season for store lambs witnessed a top call of £136 for Beltex from I Knight, Stephney, Calderbridge, with the whole sale averaging £97.60.

In addition, the 387 breeding sheep sold to £400 for a Texel gimmer from AJ and LJ Haston, Dearham Hall.

Ayr

Limousin cross heifers led the way at Craig Wilson's store cattle sale, selling to £1670 from the Nelson Family, Holmpark, and to 261.2p per kg from Messrs Howie, Auchentibbert.

Heifers cashed in at 224.3p per kg, whilst bullocks averaged 236.8p.

Bullocks peaked at £1590 for a Limousin from Holmpark, and to 273.4p for more of the same from Maxwelston.

Another large show of calves proved easily sold, with bull calves topping at £530 for a British Blue cross from Macherquhat. Heifer calves made £490 for a British Blue from Buistonhead.

Some 55 breeding cattle were also forward this week, where trade hit a top of £3150 for a Limousin heifer with heifer calf from Netherton.

More of the same breed from the same home also topped the cows and calves at£2850, whilst bulling heifers reached £1260 for Simmentals from Dalfask.

A smaller show of 66 store cattle were forward for United Auctions, where an average of 218.7p per kg was achieved.

Simmental crosses dominated the proceedings, selling to 236.8p per kg from Meikle Northburn, Cuminestown, and to £1135 from Mains of Tarryblake, Rothiemay.

On Monday, Penrith and District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 210 store cattle, where trade peaked at £1425 for Limousin cross bullocks from M Bindloss and Son, Shap Abbey.

Topping the heifer section at £1345 was a dairy bred British Blue heifer from OI Ellithorn, Dacre Lodge.

The opening sale of store lambs met a strong trade at Hawes Farmers Auction Mart, where Beltex, Texels and Mules averaged £88.03, £81.23 and £74.21 respectively.

Beltex crosses led the way at £96 for J Dixon and Sons, whilst Texels peaked at £90 for JC Clarkson.

Castle Douglas

The champion, a British Blue heifer from Messrs McCulloch, Glentoo, Castle Douglas, secured the lead price of £1580 at Wallets Marts' annual Anniversary show and sale of store cattle.

The pre-sale show judge, James Crichton from Cumbria awarded the reserve ticket to a British Blue bullock again from Messrs McCulloch, Glentoo, which went on to sell for £1300.

Out with the show, bullocks sold to £1500 for a Simmental from Messrs Robb, Trolane, and to 315.5p per kg for a British Blue from Messrs McCulloch, Glentoo, to cash in at 235.13p.

Messrs McCulloch also topped the heifers with the same breed at £1580 and 331.9p to average 228.3p.

The first sale of store lambs saw 1847 sell to a top of £98 for Texels from High Auchneil.

On Tuesday, Harrison and Hetherington held their fortnightly sale of store cattle, where Simmental bullocks sold to £1135 from Messrs Ker, Justenlees, and Limousin heifers reached £1025 for Messrs McGarva, Barwhanny.

Top price per kg was 323p paid for another Limousin from Messrs McGarva, Barwhanny, and to 241 p for Shorthorn cattle from Messrs Duncanson, Marchbank.
