Females from the Sky High herd led the Hereford Cattle Society's autumn sale at Shrewsbury, producing the majority of top prices including the sale leader at 7000gns

Selling at this price was a rising three-year-old from the Sky High herd of Boomer Birch and Graham Brindley, Staffordshire, purchased by Will Medforth, Llanrug, Gwynedd.

Sky High 1 Miss Staffordshire, is by the Canadian sire, Remitall Super Duty 42S, and out of the twice former female of the year, Dendor 1 Jennefer 15. Calved at two years of age, she sold having been served to Gouldingpoll 1 Stockman.

Her daughter, Sky High 1 Staffordshire Lass, by Gouldingpoll 1 Stockman, made 6500gns to the same Gwynedd-based buyer.

Forced to sell due to a loss of ground, the Sky High herd which was established in 2010, also received 6800gns for Gouldingpoll 1 Duchess 967, a three-year-old knocked down to Steven O’Kane who was buying on behalf of a client. By Fabb 1 Northern Star, she sold with her heifer calf, Sky high 1 Lady Lambo, by Gouldingpoll 1 Stockman.

Kendal-based breeders, G and A Redmayne, went to 6200gns for the June 2019-born, Sky High 1 L’amour Lucy, a Spurstow 1 Super Duty daughter, out of Romany 1 Lucy RE L21. She is a maternal sister to the record priced female and National Calf Show champion, Sky High 1 Lancome Lucy, and Agri Expo calf champion Sky High 1 Luscious Lucy.

The similar aged Sky High 1 Lady Leshurr made 5800gns to A Newton, Antrobus, Cheshire. She is by Sky High 1 Shawshank Redemption and is a daughter of Gouldingpoll 1 Duchess 967 sold earlier for 6800gns.

The eight-year-old Alderville 1 Diane and her heifer calf, Sky High 1 Demeter realised 5400gns, again to Steven O’Kane on behalf of a client. Diane is by Dorepoll 1 93N Transatlantic, which is bred from Remitall stock on either side of her pedigree. The calf is another Gouldingpoll 1 Stockman daughter.

Demand for females was equally strong at the collective sale which saw show heifers average £3327 with a 96% clearance.

Joint sale leader here at 5500gns was the April 2019-born Harveybros 1 Crocus S6 from George and Sophie Harvey, Balfron, Glasgow, purchased by Bosolo Farms, Isle of Arran. By Normanton 1 Laertes, her full sister Crocus Tiara was reserve female champion at the Royal Highland Showcase. She sold AI'd to Wirruna Matty M288.

Moorside 1 New Dawn 4, an 18-month-old heifer from G and MC Shepherd, Preston, also made 5500gns selling to Perthshire breeder, Ian Wilkinson of the Redstroke herd from Inchture. By Hoghton View 1 Gold Mine, she is out of a home-bred female from two Moorside-bred parents.

Inverness-shire breeders D and S Smith, Ardersier, were well rewarded for their first time selling females at public auction, selling to a top of 5300gns for the March 2020-born heifer, Milovaig 1 Lady Jane 2, purchased by Tom and Di Harrison, Mickley, Northumberland. She is by Shraden 1 Perestroika and out of a home-bred Solpoll 1 Ferrari daughter.

Willie and Pauline Wason of the Saltire herd based at Kinglassie, Fife, also got in on the action, forking out 4600gns for Dendor 1 Echo 39 from DE, ED and AL Jones, Caersws, Powys. The youngest show heifer at just nine-months-old, she is by Dendor 1 Nairobi, the 2018 National Poll Show supreme champion, while her dam, Dendor 1 Echo 36 was reserve champion at the National Calf Show, the same year.

Pembrokeshire breeders, TG, EI and EN Thorne, Milford Haven, were named 2021 National Herd of the Year, the previous night, and sold their best, Glenvale 1 Sara 730, a two-year-old heifer for 4200gns. An AI daughter of Netherhall 1 OZ Daffy M024, she is out of Bosa 1 Hereward and sold to B Nicholls, Parracombe, Devon.

Sale only females were topped at 4000gns for another from G and MC Shepherd. Moorside 1 Jane 19, by the 13,000gns Coley 1 Pilot and out of Romany 1 Jane A51 E66, was knocked down to A Whitfield, Bronington, Shropshire.

Her herd mate, Moorside 1 New Dawn 5, another by Pilot, made 3600gns to Ian Wilkinson.

Top price amongst the bulls was 4000gns paid for Carolyn Fletcher's Barwise 1 Tango MU T1139 from Appleby-in-Westmorland. He sold to commercial producer Mark Spendlove, Northamptonshire to use on British Blue cross cows.
