The dearest trade on record was met at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale of 450 store cattle where 45 animals broke the £1500 price tag, achieving a top price of £1900 for a Limousin cross heifer from RG and LA Grieve, Whiteside, Hexham.

Steers sold to a top of £1890 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Slack, Newby, Carlisle.

A smaller show of weaned cattle were forward where Limousin bullocks topped at £1120 on two occasions firstly from Messrs Elliot, Hallburn Croft, and again from Messrs Robertson, Newton of Logierait.

More of the same breed led the heifers at £1100 for Messrs Robertson, Newton of Logierait, with Limousins also securing the top price among the bulls of £1190 for Messrs Mallinson, The Hill.

A sharper trade was met for the 480 calves, which sold to £520 for two British Blue bulls from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown.

Heifers realised £520 fore more of the same breed this time from Messrs Wadsworth, Big Balcraig.

On Monday, the firm held their weekly sale of store and breeding sheep, witnessing a top price of £112 for a Texel hogg and lamb from Messrs Todhunter, Greyrigg.

Bullocks sold to 291.30p per kg for a 460kg Limousin cross from Stacks, and to £1665 for a 678kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Middleton.

Limousin crosses dominated the heifers at 285.10p for a 470kg entry from South Woodlane, and to £1640 for a 650kg animal from Half Mark.

An Aberdeen-Angus cross led the young bulls at £1000 for Newhall.

The firm also sold 1929 store and breeding sheep to a top of £123 for a Llyen ewe hogg from Mid Linthills.

Store hoggs realised £119 for Texels from East Dron, and to £85 per life for Texel crosses and Beltex lambs at foot from Kinburn.

Dingwall

More than 1000 store cattle were forward for Dingwall and Highland marts' show and sale, where the annual Aberdeen-Angus show witnessed bullocks rule supreme, with the champion coming from Ardross Castle, Ardross, which later realised £1280, with the reserve being a similar type from Ardjachie, Tain, which went on to make £1480.

However topping the Aberdeen-Angus bullocks was a 400kg entry from Ardross Castle, Ardross, which made 320p per kg, whilst a 485kg animal from Croft Martin, Insh, grossed £1500, to average 232.7p.

Aberdeen-Angus heifers cashed in at 229.3p having sold to 255.6p for a 360kg entry from Swordale, Ardgay, and to £1580 for a 690kg heifer from Culrain Mains, Ardgay.

Beef Shorthorns led the other native bullocks at 278.5p for Lochdhu, Nairn and to £1250 for Balliefurth, Grantown on Spey, whilst heifers attained 253.3p for a 383kg Luing cross from Killimister Mains, Wick, and to £1340 for a 612kg Beef Shorthorn from Balliefurth, Grantown on Spey.

Continental bullocks and heifers averaged 244.7p and 235.0p respectively, topping at 279.5p for a 415kg Limousin cross bullock from Viewhill Croft, Easter Kinkell, and to £1570 for a pair of 597kg Charolais crosses from Ardjachie, Tain.

Heifers made 276.2p for a 315kg Charolais cross from Middleton of Brims, Thurso, and to £1220 for a 480kg Limousin cross from Achue, Spinningdale.

Among the store cattle it was a Limousin heifer that made £1580 for JWR and M Suddes, Towdy Potts, Wolsingham, whilst steers peaked at £1440 K and J Heslop, Fishburn.

Heifers and steers cashed in at £1079 and £1067 respectively.
