More than 40 cattle sold for £1500 or more at Harrison and Hetherington's May sale with trade topping at £1900 on two occasions for British Blue and Charolais bullocks from Messrs Stamper, Rose, and Messrs Johnston, Westray, Cockermouth, respectively.

Charolais crosses again from Messrs Johnston, Westray, were keenly bid for among the heifers, selling to £1790.

A Salers cow from Messrs Strick, Overby House, Silloth, with a calf at foot secured £1700, with Limousin cross bulls topping the weaned cattle at £1250.

Steers attained £1160 for an Aberdeen-Angus from Messrs Carr, Whitecloserigg, Longtown, who also joint topped the heifers for a British Blue at £1080 with Messrs Waddell, Dewshill Farm also gaining £1080.

The weekly sale of 340 calves witnessed a top call of £610 for a British Blue cross bull from Messrs Watson, Millrigg, with heifers realising £555 fore more of the same breed this time from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown.

On Monday, a large show of ewes and lambs witnessed a top call of £142 paid for a Texel hogg with a Beltex lamb at foot from Tom Linton, The Firs, Muirhouse.

Bullocks and heifers averaged 243.81p per kg and 230.73p respectively at United Auctions' weekly store cattle sale.

Limousin crosses led the pence per kg sections with a 352kg bullock making 298.30p for Newhouse of Glamis, whilst a 398kg heifer achieved 305.40p.

A 614kg Aberdeen-Angus bullock realised £1630 for Longloch, whilst a 672kg Charolais heifer secured £1680 for Firhills.

Young bulls (33) cashed in at 215.62 having sold to 242.10p for a Limousin cross from Wester Bonhard, and to £1135 for an Aberdeen-Angus cross from Castlehill.

Also forward were 540 store and breeding sheep which topped at £93 for Texel ewes with single Beltex lambs from West Park.

Cattle met a firm trade at Dingwall and Highland Marts, having sold to a top of 305.1p per kg for 472kg Limousin crosses from Achavrole Mains, Halkirk, and to £1510 for more of the same breed weighing 540kg from Meadle, Isle of Skye, with heifers cashing in at 223.7p.

Bullocks averaged 241.2p having sold to 281.0p for a 395kg Charolais cross from Kindeace, Alness, and to £1250 for a 570kg Beef Shorthorn from Alterwall, Lyth.

Shorthorns were in demand among the young bulls topping at 220.5p for a pen of 263kg Whitebred Shorthorns from Cairnurenan, Mulbuie, and to £1160 for a 585kg Beef Shorthorn from Upperton, Balnain.

All classes of store sheep sold well selling to a top of £138 for a Texel cross ram from Bluebell Cottage, with the same home selling hoggs to £110.

Ewes realised £133 for Texels from Rowanlea, Bonar Bridge, whilst £91 per life was paid for a Texel cross ewe with twin Texel cross wedder lambs at foot from Easter Glackton, Gollanfield.

Bullocks led the way at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' weekly sale, when selling to 328.2p per kg for a 262kg Limousin cross from Leary, Marwick, and to £1685 for a pair of 756kg Simmental crosses from Bu, Stronsay, to cash in at 250.6p.

On the female side, heifers averaged 244.2p having sold to 298.2p for a 436kg Limousin cross from Norton, Dounby, and to£1600 for a 656kg Charolais from AJR Farms, Milton of Collieston.

Charolais dominated the bull trade at 244.8p for a 478kg entry from Mormond Prop, New Pitsligo, and to £1540 for a 646kg cross from Norton.

On Tuesday, the firm sold 1811 store and breeding sheep to a top of £145 for Mule hoggs with single lambs from Bogiebrae, Rhynie, which cashed in at £82.47.

Store lambs sold to £81 for Continentals from Upper Sauchen, Ordhead.

The monthly sale of 138 pigs witnessed cutters and baconers sell to £220 for Large Blacks.

A young pure pedigree registered Berkshire breeding boar from Messrs MacKay, Ulpha, Broughton in Furness made £200.

A top price of £900 was achieved for a Limousin cross British Friesian bull from the Lodge, at Penrith and District Farmers’ Marts' fortnightly sale of 151 rearing calves and stirks.

Aberdeen-Angus heifers peaked at £800 for J Cartmel, Winter Cragg, with bullocks from the same home closely following at £780.

A joint top price of £1900 was achieved on two occasions at Hexham and Northern Marts' weekly sale, firstly paid for a Hereford bullock from Messrs Eggleston, Thornham Hill, and again for a Limousin steer from Steven Graham, Miller Hill, Gilsland.

Dearest heifer on the day was a Charolais cross from Willie Woodman, Great Chesters, at £1860.

A pair of Dutch Texels led the store lambs at £156 for BA and AM Storrow and Son, Willimoteswick.

Lanark

On Tuesday, Lawrie and Symington sold 525 store cattle at their fortnightly sale, where bullocks and heifers averaged 238.7p per kg and 229.4p respectively.

Limousin crosses dominated the bullocks at £1605 for a 750kg entry from Burnfoot, and to 275.3p for a 356kg animal from Pretts Mill.

Heifers peaked at £1340 for two 603kg Aberdeen-Angus from Bowridge, and to 300p for a 400kg Limousin from Southmains.

Dairy bullocks topped at £1255 for a 688kg Holstein from Dykehead, Lesmahagow, to average 182p.

A new centre record was achieved this week at C and D auction marts' sale when a pedigree Dutch Spotted hogg with twin lambs from Walby Farm Park, sold for £2250 per outfit, followed by its stable mate at £620 per life or £1860 per outfit.

Ewes and lambs topped at £135 a life for a pair of Texel ewes with single lambs from Messrs Main, Byers.

Among the store hoggs, trade peaked at £88 for Cheviots from Archbank, with feeding ewes selling to £170 for Texels from Townfoot.
