Carlisle

A buoyant trade was witnessed at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly store cattle sale, which averaged more than £1200.

Leading the trade at £2040 was a Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Gibson, Cocklet Hill, Hethersgill, whilst heifers peaked at £1770 for more of the same this time from Messrs Grice, Newtown, Carlisle.

Cows and calves attained £1640 for a Hereford outfit from Messrs Lindsay , High Crosby.

A large entry for the time of year was forward among the weaned cattle selling to £1300 for a Charolais bull from Messrs Stobart, The Square, Kirklinton, with heifers and steers being topped by Aberdeen-Angus from Hillhead Livestock, Hillhead, at £1280 and £1090 respectively.

The weekly of 336 calves achieved a top price of £585 for a Limousin heifer form JR and JRW Corlett, Skiddaw View.

Steers topped at £550 for more of the same breed from DJ Livingstone, Gretna for a Limousin.

Bullocks (62) and heifers (97) cashed in at 243p per kg and 226.2p respectively at Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale of store cattle.

Aberdeen-Angus crosses from Viewhill, Dornoch, were in demand, topping the sale at £1610 for a 670kg bullock, and to £1500 for a pair of 652kg heifers.

Among the pence per kg section a top price of 270.8p was paid for a pair of 240kg Saler cross bullocks from Corslet, Fortrose, and to 268.2p for a 220kg Limousin cross heifer from Achany, Lairg.

Young bulls (12) sold to £1010 for a Limousin from Lower Whitebog, Fortrose, with breeding cattle hitting £3500 for a British Blue bull from Fleucharry, Dornoch.

An Aberdeen-Angus cross bullock from R and J Speirs, Clevance, led the way at Craig Wilson's sale of 265 store cattle, when selling to £1680.

A Limousin cross bullock from JR Howie, Auchentibbert, attained 276.9p per kg, with the same home leading the heifers at £1650 and 291.6p for a pair of Limousin crosses.

Bullocks cashed in at 227p with heifers averaging 232p.

On Tuesday, the firm sold six dairy cattle and 61 calves and stirks, with trade reaching £2400 for a second calver from M and A Steel and Sons, Ditton.

Among the calves it was cattle from Ian C Gilmour and Sons, Humeston, that came out on top with an Aberdeen-Angus cross heifer making £560, while a British Blue cross bull attained £550.

A small end of season offering of ewes and hoggs with lambs witnessed a top call of £242 for a pen of 15 Mule hoggs with single Roussin lambs from J Kerr, Cundry Mains.

Mule ewes with twin lambs achieved £220 for E Scott, Mains of Park.

Charolais bullocks from Newton of Carnousie, Forglen, secured the top prices at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' store cattle sale, when selling to 302.5p per kg for a 648kg entry and to £2070 for a pair weighing 714kg.

Bullocks (199) averaged 246.3p with heifers (183) cashing in at 232.2p having sold to 273.3p for a 472kg Limousin cross from Mains of Allanbuie, Keith, and to £1490 for a pair of 646kg Charolais crosses from Bogmill, Pitcaple.

Charolais from Ernan, Waterside, led the bulls at 250p for a 512kg entry and to £1585 for a 666kg animal.

Among the sale of 80 breeding cattle trade peaked at 5400gns for a Limousin bull from Suttieside, Forfar.

The same home sold Simmental cows and calves for £3150 and £2800 with bull and heifer calves respectively, as well as selling an in-calf heifer at £2300.

A Limousin cross heifer with bull calf made £2800 for Mains of Drumdollo, Drumblade, with a Limousin bulling heifer attaining 2350gns for Shannas, Clola.

On Monday, Penrith and District Farmers’ Mart held their fortnightly sale of 195 store cattle, which reached £2000 for a British Blue heifer from JG and RW Nevinson and Son, High House, Pica.

On Tuesday, C and D Auction Marts held their final sale of the season with more than 1000 ewes, gimmers and hoggs with lambs at foot coming under the hammer, where trade peaked at £137 for Texel cross hoggs with single lambs from Quarry House.

Included in the sale was the annual consignment from Robbie Muir, Tow Law, which witnessed a top call of £255 for a Beltex stock ram, with Texel hoggs and singles selling to £130.

The firm also held their fortnightly sale of store cattle which peaked at £1160 for Simmental and Limousin cross bullocks from Dalmahoy Farms, Kirknewton, Midlothian, who also sold heifers to £1140.
