Carlisle

A much larger entry of 400 store cattle were forward this week for Harrison and Hetherington's sale, where trade peaked at £1950 for a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Stamper, Rose, Cockermouth.

Heifers achieved £1850 for two Limousin crosses from Messrs Grice, Newtown, Carlisle.

A Simmental bull secured £1455 for Messrs Hague of Whitehaven, whilst Limousin bullocks reached £1100 from Edmondson, Whalloway.

Aberdeen-Angus led the heifers at £1280 for Thompson, Eden Bank.

The firm also held their sale of 330 calves, which attained a top call of £535 on three occasions for British Blue bull calves from Messrs Ogden, Pears Ghyll, Penrith, with the same home leading the heifers at £480.

On Monday, store lambs topped at £105 for a Badgerface Texel from Messrs Jordan, Low Fauld.

The same home also led the Beltex at £103.

Bullocks (226) and heifers (359) averaged 238.09p per kg and 225.45p respectively at United Auctions' weekly sale of 651 store cattle.

Bullocks led the sale at 272.60p for a 288kg Limousin cross from Killegruer, and to £1600 for a 601kg Charolais cross from Balegreggan.

A 460kg British Blue cross heifer from High Milndovan, made 269.60p, whilst a 582kg Charolais cross heifer from High Milndovan, attained £1550.

On Monday, the firm sold 4655 store lambs to a top of £105 for Beltex from Lower Killernie, with this breed averaging £85.16 (£2.25 on the year).

Texel crosses and Suffolk crosses cashed in at £85 (+£2.98) and £84.90 (+£1.49) respectively, with Cheviots balancing out at £84.00 (+£4.50) and Mules hitting £76.02 (-£2.13).

Bridgend cattle secured the top spots at Craig Wilson's sale of 357 store cattle, where a Limousin bull made £1745 and an Aberdeen-Angus heifer hit £1450.

Bullocks and heifers averaged 234.6p and 226.4p respectively, with Limousins from Markhill Farms, leading the pence per kg sections, where bullocks and heifers made 280.2p and 284.5p respectively.

On Tuesday, the firm sold nine dairy cattle to a top of £2250 for a Holstein Friesian heifer from Messrs Boyd, Dechmont.

A Simmental cross heifer led the calves at £600 for A and CB Miller, Baidlandhill, with stirks hitting £1270 for a Simmental cross bullock from DL and J Currie, Pinclanty, with more of the same breed leading the heifers at £1000 for Murrayton Farms.

Also forward this week were 86 head of breeding cattle where trade peaked at £2950 for a Limousin heifer with bull calf at foot from South Biggart.

Breeding ewes sold to £160 on two occasions, firstly for a pen of half bred one-crop ewes from Newmill, Rathen, and again for Texel cross three crop ewes from Mill of Fowlis, Muir of Fowlis.

Among the heifers it was cattle from Waterhead of Dryfe Ltd that proved popular selling Herefords to 260p and Aberdeen-Angus to £960.
