A Limousin cross steer secured the lead price of £2040 at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly store cattle sale for Messrs Johnston, Westray, Cockermouth, with heifers selling to £1745 for a Simmental cross from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth.

A Limousin bull from Messrs Evans, Halmyre, Castle Douglas, topped the 451 weaned cattle at £1315, with bullocks to £1100 for Charolais from Messrs Langcake, Isle Old Park, Cockermouth and heifers to £1140 for Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Thompson, Edenbanks, Cumwhitton.

The 390 calves peaked at £520 for a British Blue bull from Messrs Elwen, Netherfield, with heifers from the same home reaching £455.

Store hoggs sold to £108 for Texel crosses from David Kerr, Ballykillet, whilst Texel ewes with twin lambs at foot realised £262 for John Cousar, Howcommon.

On Tuesday, six dairy cattle sold to £2180 for a freshly calved Holstein Friesian heifer from Charles Service and Co, Moorpark, with the 72 calves and stirks selling to £485 for a British Blue cross bull from HF Vance and Co, Low Barledziew. Charolais cross bullocks led the way at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale when reaching 321.6p per kg for a 398kg entry from Kinaldie, Logie Coldstone, and to £1980 for a 716kg animal from Brucewells, Netherley, to average 253.4p.

Heifers sold to 299.7p for 302kg Charolais crosses from Glebe of Deisher, Boat of Garten, and to £1560 for 625kg Limousin crosses from Carnieston, Insch, to cash in at 241p.

Charolais also led the bulls at 257.4p from Kinclune, Glenkindie, and to £1330 for Mormond Prop, New Pitsligo.

Also forward were 178 BVD virus free and vaccinated bulling heifers, which averaged 260.1p. Simmental weighing 536kg topped the trade at 320.9p for Berryleys, Grange, and to £1800 for a pair of 622kg British Blue crosses from Broadwater, Skene.

This week, the firm sold 244 head of adult breeding cattle to a top of £3900 for a Limousin cross heifer with Limousin cross heifer calf at foot from Wester Bleaton, Bridge of Cally.

Cows sold to £3550 for a Simmental cross with Charolais bull calf from Campdalmore, Tomintoul.

More than 1000 store and breeding sheep came under the hammer on Tuesday, where a top price of £135 was paid for Valis Blacknose cross ewes with lambs from Mains of Coburty, Rosehearty, with this section averaging £88.25 (+£12.03 per head on the year).

Store lambs (77) cashed in at £82.99 and sold to £101 for Cheviots from Meikle Toux, Cornhill.

Aberdeen-Angus bullocks from JR McKay and Son, Broughton Mains, led the way at £1310, with Limousin bullocks realising 287.8p for C Oxley, Druchtag.

Heifers hit £1300 for Limousins from Martin Kevans of Seaview, with more of the same making 268.2p for Druchtag.

The May beef breeding sale at Bentham Auction Mart was staged alongside the major reduction sale of the Blackpool herd of Simmentals on behalf of JD Loftus, which sold to £3150 for the cow and calf outfit, Blackpool Hayley and her heifer calf, Martha.

The stock bull, Denizes Juggernaut, made £5000.

Commercial cows and calves attained £2400 for ME and J Swarbrick, Stalmine.

A pair of Texel lambs from Freddie Jenkinson, Stalmine, weighing 41kg achieved £215 and 524p per kg.

Lockerbie

On Tuesday, Harrison and Hetherington held their fortnightly sale of store cattle, where bullocks led proceedings at 326.1p per kg for a 268kg Limousin from Messrs Common, Crossdykes, and to £1640 for a Charolais from Messrs Halliday, Crawthat.

Heifers attained 304.7p for Messrs Rae, Muirhead, and to £1390 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Wilson, Belzies.

A Limousin heifer from Messrs Mitchell, Parrick House Farm, Barnard Castle, stood pre-sale champion before going on to top the sale at £1480.

Standing reserve was a Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Watson, Palletstone, Barnard Castle, which later realised £1380.

United Auctions sold 449 store cattle, 46 breeding cattle and 490 sheep of all classes on Tuesday, where a 414kg Limousin cross bullock made £1200 for Messrs Campbell, Achnacree Beag, while a 380kg Charolais cross heifer attained £1000 for R and R Reid, Ardmaleish.

Among the pence per kg sections it was Limousin crosses from Messrs Troughton, Ardachy, that took the top spots, selling 269kg bullocks to 368p, whilst 280kg heifers made 303.6p.

Bullocks and heifers averaged 247.59p and 233.2p respectively.

Cows with calves sold to £1400 on two occasions, firstly from AJ Morrison, Eoligarry and again from IR Morrison, Eoligarry, Barra.

On the sheep front Texel crosses dominated all sections, topping the store hoggs at £120 for Knock, and reaching £158 for ewes from Fanmore.

A Limousin bull secured the top price of £5200 among the breeding cattle for Messrs Hansell, Nether Barr.
