Elgin Redrum proved the star attraction at the recent British Charolais Cattle Society sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, when achieving the top price of 18,000gns for Roy and Matthew Milne, Kennies Hillock, Elgin.

This junior bull stood reserve overall champion at the pre-sale show judged by Jeremy Price, Oakchurch. A December 2020-born entry, he is sired by the 14,000gns Westcarse Houdini and out of Elgin JessieJ, which goes back to the Royal Highland junior champion, Elgin Highroller. He was knocked down to John Hepburn, Hawick, Roxburghshire.

Neil and Stuart Barclay, Harestone, Insch, had a field day both in the show and the sale ring with several bulls at big money, including the reserve junior champion, Harestone Superior which sold for the second top price of 17,000gns.

This March 2021-born bull is a son of the 25,000gns Inverlochy Ferdie, out of the Harestone Ronsard sired-dam, Harestone Brigitte. He now travels to West Yorkshire with Danny Sawrij of Swalesmoor Livestock, Kedzlie Farms, Halifax.

Not far behind, on 14,000gns was Harestone Rolex, which sold to Steve Gilleard, Thorne, Doncaster, South Yorkshire. This 19-month-old is by the home-bred Harestone Hercules, and out of Alsnow Enchantress, which goes back to Blelack Roger.

Harestone Rsturbo, stood intermediate champion before going on to achieve 13,000gns when selling to JE Woodman and Son, Haltwhistle, Northumberland. Similarly aged, he is got by frozen semen from the French sire, Major and is bred from the imported dam, Bresiliene.

Neil Blyth, Marwood, Elwick, Cleveland, sold his best, Marwood Robocop, for 11,000gns to Billy Milne of the Glenernan herd, Strathdon, Aberdeenshire. Reserve senior champion at the pre-sale show, he is a son of the 16,000gns Balthayock Lineup, out of Marwood Ingo, which is sired by Marwood Flyer.

Three bulls then sold for 10,000gns with the first to achieve this being the overall champion, Dooley Rocket from David Thornley, Wartoft Grange, Diseworth. His October 2020-born bull is a son of Wesley Forceful and out of the Falleninch Hamzoraj sired-dam, Dooley Molly. William Forbes, Ballindalloch, Banff, was the final bidder.

Welsh breeders, the Howells family, Brynteg, Llanybydder, Dyfed, then received the same money for the 18-month-old, Ellerton Razzamatazz, from father and son duo, Andrew and Tom Brown, Ellerton, Swallow Cottage, Selby. He is by the 14,000gns Westcarse Houdini and out of Ellerton Marigold which is backed by Sandelford Harrison.

Another making 10,000gns was Goldies Roddy from Hamish Goldie, Ruthwell, Dumfries, when selling to Bill Bruce, Meigle, Blairgowrie. This December 2020-born bull stood second in his class and is the result of a mating between Elrick Officer and the Blelack Digger sired-dam, Goldies Libby, which has produced bulls to 23,000gns.

Lucy Houston and family, Gretnahouse, Dumfries, sold Gretnahouse Rooftop for 9500gns to JC Hobday and Son, Hawick, Roxburghshire. This September 2020-born bull is by the 12,000gns Wesley Equinox and out of Gretnahouse Oluthera, a Balthayock Gladiator daughter.

Just behind, on 9000gns, Balmyle Reunion, a 14-month-old bull from Bill Bruce, Meigle, was purchased by Charles Leslie and Sons, Dufftown, Moray. His pedigree features Balmyle Jasper, which has bred five sons to average 14,000gns, and the dam, Balmyle Gemma, a Dingle Hofmeister daughter.

Selling for the same money was the winning show calf, Brailes Samson, from Richard Hassall and Rachel Wyllie, Oxford.

Samson, a January 2021-born bull which stood junior champion at Stars of the future and inter-breed champion at the new pedigree calf show at LiveScot, is a son of Westcarse Houdini, out of Bassett Orange. He travels to Wales with Messrs Thomas, Pontrug, Caernarfon, Gwynedd.

Topping the females at 6500gns was Harestone Rapunzel which was part of the draft sale from the Barclay's Harestone herd, Insch. This maiden heifer is backed by home-bred genetics being a daughter of Harestone Nano, out of the Allanfauld Gambler daughter, Harestone Nancy. Messrs Mitchell, Skelton, Penrith, were the final bidders.

Harestone Rihanna, from the same home made 4800gns selling to Messrs O’Kane Farms, Dunloy, Ballymena Co Antrim. She is the result of the Maerdy Newman sire onto the Thrunton Fearless daughter, Harestone Lulu.
