A strong show of 63 prime steers and heifers was forward at for Harrison and Hetherington’s Christmas show and sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle.

The judge Alan Hall, Stranraer, awarded the championship honours to a 709kg Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Dent, Elm House.

That sold for a price of £3048, or 430p per kg, while the reserve was a 688kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, that went under the hammer at £2683, or 390p per kg.

The 94 prime bulls were topped at £2550 for 1065kg Limousin from Messrs Scott, Dalton Hook, Lockerbie or to 311.5p for a British Blue from Messrs Jarman.

A British Blue from Newton High House led the cast cow trade at £3110 or 314.5p, with an Angus from Caldcoats topping the cast bulls at £2006 or 193.5p for a Luing from Over Hill House.

The firm also held its Christmas show and sale of prime sheep, where the 300 head forward for judge Morgan Helliwell saw a pen of four Beltex from Messrs Dempster, Castle Hill, claim the championship.

The judge backed his decision and purchased his choice of champions for £450 per head.

Reserve honours went to Messrs Story, Woodhead, with the any other breed winners which again sold to judge at £200 per head. Overall, lambs averaged 261p.

Topping the cast ewe sale was a Texel ram from LW and CM Todd, Longhurst at £158, with ewes peaking at £154 for a pair of Texels from Messrs Mallinson, The Hill.
