THERE was a good entry of 432 store cattle where trade was brisk at Harrison and Hetherington, last week, which peaked at £1380 for a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Baxter, Eden Banks. 
Bullocks hit £1290 for a Limmy cross from Messrs Studholme, Ash View, with weaners to £1175 for an Aberdeen-Angus bullock from Edenbanks. 
On Monday, H and H held its weekly sale of breeding sheep where quality outfits met a strong trade to top at £104 per life for a pen of Texel gimmers with singles from T and R Greenbank, The Faulds.

A MIXED show of 233 store cattle sold at keen rates through Dingwall and Highland Marts, where 126 bullocks levelled at 228.7p per kg with 103 heifers at 219.4p. 
Limousin crosses topped the price per kg at 263.8p for a 235kg pair of bullocks from 7 Kingsburgh, Portree, with heifers to 247.3p for a 372kg pair from Lower Sibster, Wick. 
Per head, a 480kg Charolais cross from 15 Glenconon, Portree, topped at £1130 while heifers reached £1120 for a 465kg Limmy cross from 217 The Doll, Brora. 
Young bulls (four) averaged 243p and sold to 245.3p for a pair of 322kg Limousins from Corriebeg, Fort William, and £1110 gross for a 460kg pair of Limousins from Strone Farm, Fort William.
Of the 49 prime and feeding cows, which averaged 140.6p, a Simmental from Barns of Hempriggs, Wick, led at 171.2p while another from 15 Achairn, Shinness, hit £1510. 
The four feeding bulls sold to 154.3p for a Limousin cross from 3 Kinbeachie, Culbokie, and £1490 for a Charolais from 15 Glenconon.

Leading the entry at 281.1p was a 297kg Blonde cross bullock from South Brownhill with bullocks also hitting £1245 for a Simmental cross weighing 538kg from Fountainhill. Dairy bullocks reached 172.9p and £835 for a 483kg Holstein cross from Hillend. 
Limousin crosses topped the heifer entry at 258.1p for one weighing 372kg from Upper Kinneil and £1295 for another weighing 580kg from Balafark. 
Averaging 151.55p, the 77 beef-bred cast cows sold to 191.4p for an Aberdeen-Angus cross from Baidlandhill and £1590 for a Limousin cross from Greenshields.

Huntly
LARGER, stronger store cattle met an animated trade and were sharper on the fortnight at United Auctions’ sale of 315 through Huntly. 
Limousin cross bullocks from Barnyards of Badenyouchers, Cornhill, topped the price per kg at 265p with more of the same from Tochineal, Cullen, leading the gross trade at £1420. Bullocks (212) averaged 239.59p. 
Heifers (68) sold to average 222.09p, selling to a top of 244.5p for Romagnolas from Weetyfoot, Grange, as well as £1155 for an Aberdeen-Angus from Ballindalloch Home Farm.
The 30 OTM cattle peaked at 200p for a Blonde cross from Mains of Colliethie, Gartly, as well as £1400 for both a Charolais cross cow from Ernam and an Aberdeen-Angus bull from Tulchan Estate, Grantown on Spey. 
Ewes and lambs (178) sold to a top of £73 per life for Texel crosses from The Bin, Cairnie.

THERE was a catalogued entry of 649 store cattle forward for Hope’s Auction Co’s May show and sale, where there was an outstanding trade for all classes and British Blue bullocks from William and Bruce Murray, Prior House, Kirklinton, topped at £1515. 
Heifers sold to £1485 for Limousins from William and Ruth Lawson, Stubbsgill, Workington. 
The show was judged by Anthony Tindale, Darlington, who selected a 12-month-old Limousin heifer from Alan Gill, Newlands, Ireby, as his champion which went on to sell for £1175 to Andrew Whitwham, Huddersfield. 
In reserve was a yearling Limousin bullock from Ken and Chris Pears, Fellside House, which sold to David Barker, Scarborough, for £1305. 
The winning young bull from Peter and Mike Watson, Cunningarth, Wigton, led the section at £1335.

BREEDING cattle continued to sell at recent rates to a busy ringside of buyers at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ sale of 150 head, which included eight breeding bulls. 
Females sold to £3150 for a Limousin heifer with bull calf at foot from Roundhome, Corse, while cows with calves hit £2800 for two Salers with a calf of each from Firth Farm, Lilliesleaf. 
In-calf females sold to £2000 for a Salers also from Firth, with bulls to £3000 for a Limmy from Upper Sauchen, Ordhead. 
The company’s sale of 701 store cattle saw averages slip on the week as 360 bullocks averaged 230.7p (-2.5p) with 315 heifers at 219.5p (-2p). 
They sold to 283.8p for a 296kg Limousin cross heifer from Backmuir, Keith, with heifers also hitting £1315 for a trio of Aberdeen-Angus weighing 578kg from Stonyford, Tarland, with the same home leading the gross trade at £1495 with a 638kg Angus bullock. 
Bullocks also sold to 282.1p for a pen of five Simmental crosses weighing 234kg from Crossroads, Rothiemay. 
Young bulls (26) reached 243.1p for a 218kg Limousin Cross from Langlanburn, Deskford, and £1280 for a 690kg Charolais from Stonyford.
Of the Orkney and Shetland cattle, heifers sold to 265.8p per kg for a 316kg Limousin from Mucklehouse, Swannay, and £1170 gross for a pair of 522kg Limousins from Appiehouse, Stenness. Bullocks reached 262.8p for a 312kg Charolais from Gilbraes, Twatt, and £1270 for a 558kg Aberdeen-Angus from Eastabist, Dounby.
A large entry of 2548 ewes with lambs sold slightly easier on the week and to a top of £120 per head for Mule hoggs with singles from Bogiebrae, Rhynie. 
Lleyns from Tillykerrie, Keith-Hall, led the 155 store hoggs at £87.50. and the 1097 feeding sheep hit £143 for pure Texels from Broomhill, Dunecht.

Fort William
IT was a successful sale for all classes of stock at Dingwall and Highland Marts’ recent sale of 124 store, 17 OTM and 12 breeding cattle as well as 670 sheep. 
A pair of Charolais cross bullocks weighing 260kg from Moy Farm, Banavie, topped the trade at 300p per kg with the 29 bullocks (which averaged 255.6p) also selling to £1010 for a 390kg Limousin cross from Balmaglaster, Spean Bridge, (Cameron).
An Aberdeen-Angus cross heifer weighing 630kg from 2 Unachan, Spean Bridge, topped the gross trade at £1130 with the 94 heifers also hitting 270p for a 200kg Whitebred Shorthorn cross from 6 Blaich, Fort William. 
Averaging 131.2p, the 17 OTM cattle reached 165p per for a Simmental cross from Mucomir Farm, Spean Bridge, and £1010 twice – for a Shorthorn cross and a Simmental cross, both from Moy Farm.
A Simmental cross cow with twins from Moy led the 12 breeding cattle at £1450. 
Levelling at £40.93, the 252 store hoggs sold to £90 for a Cheviot from Craigard, Kilchoan, with a pen of Cheviot ewes with cross lambs from Balmaglaster (Cameron) leading the 126 breeding sheep at £172. 
Feeding ewes (260) averaged £43.09 and sold to £91 for a pen of Blackfaces from Glendoe Estate, Fort Augustus, while feeding sheep (32) averaged £61.28 and sold to £76 gross for Cheviot gimmers from Isle of Muck Farms, Isle of Muck.

A PLAINER show of 291 store cattle met a similar trade at Caledonian Marts, where Limousin bullocks from A McDowall and Son, Mid Ervie, Stranraer, topped the price per kg at 269p. 
Bullocks also sold to £1190 twice – for a 520kg Limousin from A MacGregor, Allanfauld, Kilsyth, as well as a 520kg Aberdeen-Angus from W Taylor, Wester Pirleyhill, Falkrik – and averaged 221p. 
Heifers levelled at 211p, having peaked at 240p for a Charolais from D Stewart, Leysbent, Denny, and £1170 from K and A Graham, Easterton, Doune. 
Averaging 151p, dairy-bred bullocks sold to 155p and £680 from Glenside Farms. 
Also forward were 797 ewes with lambs and feeding sheep where breeders sold sharper on the fortnight and to a top of £204 for a pen of Beltex cross ewes with twins from Martin and Jane Kennedy, Lurgan, Edradynate.

Penrith
THERE was a full ringside of prospective buyers at Penrith and District Farmers’ Mart’s New Fair sale of beef breeding cattle, where a British Blue heifer with Limousin-sired bull calf from RG Todd, Crosby Hall, topped at £3300 when sold to TH Harrison, Sleddale Hall. 
The run from Crosby Hall averaged £2339.29 while a run of Limousin heifers bred from out of Friesian cows, all with Limousin calves at foot from JD and F Wharton, cashed in to average £2116.66.
Bulling heifers sold well and to a top of £1460 for a Blue cross Friesian from J Nattrass, Low Crossgill, selling to Messrs Lowis, Waterside House. This run averaged £1206.67.
There was a mixed show of store cattle forward which met a strong trade and peaked at £1395 for a British Blue cross heifer from JE Bellas and Son, Croft Ends, while bullocks reached £1295 for a Limousin yearling from Neil Slack, Plumtree House.

TRADE was firmer for all classes at C and D Auction Marts’ holiday sale of store cattle where 175 were forward. 
They reached £1090 for Limousin heifers form Ballaggan with more of the same from Herries making 269.4p per kg as the 83 heifers averaged 207p. 
Bullocks (47) averaged 227.1p and hit tops of 273.4p for Limousins from New Mains and £1040 for Aberdeen-Angus from Branteth. 
Averaging 191.2p, the entry of 45 young bulls reached 264.1p and £1030 for Limousins from New Mains.

Heifers also reached £1190 for a Limousin from Messrs Wilson, Belzies, while bullocks sold to 252.9p for Aberdeen-Angus from Messrs Taylor, Fingland, as well as £900 for Limousins from Messrs Swan and Son, Cleughhead.
