Carlisle

MOST classes of store and weaned cattle sold sharper on the week with stronger, shorter keep cattle meeting a keen enquiry at Harrison and Hetherington's sale of 244 store and 217 weaned cattle.

Stores peaked at £1380 twice for Limousin bullocks from both Messrs Little, Maryland, Wigton, and Messrs Grice, Newtown, Carlisle, while heifers peaked at £1290 for another from Newtown.

Weaners hit £1140 for British Blue heifers from Oakghyll Farm, with bulls to £975 for Limmies from West Moorhouses and bullocks to £950 for the same from Crow Hall.

CATTLE from Wester Middleton headed up most sections of United Auctions' sale of 777 store cattle and young bulls when a 576kg Limousin cross bullock topped the gross trade at £1380, while Charolais crosses led the heifer entry at 257.3p per kg for one weighing 478kg and £1360 for another at 563kg.

Bullocks (405) also reached 279.2p for a 283kg Limousin cross from Carslae and averaged 220.9p while 263 heifers levelled at 212.4p.

The 101 dairy-bred bullocks averaged 162.5p having peaked at 196.2p for a 507kg Friesian cross from Corsewall Castle and £1230 for a 650kg Holstein cross from Crookedstonemuir.

Eight young bulls levelled at 164.4p and sold to 192.9p for a Limousin cross from Duirland Farms and £930 for a Hereford cross from Hood.

Of the 163 cast cows on offer, a Simmental cross from High Mildovan topped at 196.2p with a Charolais cross from Balthayock to £1530. The 125 beef-bred cows averaged 127p while 38 dairy cows levelled at 103.7p, having sold tom 136.9p for a Holstein cross from High Langmuir as well as £8895 twice, for a MRI cross from Grassmainston and a Holstein cross from Hillend.

THERE was a plainer show for quality which met an easier trade at Craig Wilson's sale of 314 store cattle, where 124 bullocks averaged 206p per kg or £888.26, 122 heifers levelled at 204.8p or £883.57, and 68 dairy-bred bullocks cashed in at 148.2p or £673.01.

Hitting tops of £1310 were an Aberdeen-Angus heifer from Low Wexford and a British Blue from Barroch Brae, with heifers also topping the price per kg at 247.5p for Limousins from Maxwelston.

Bullocks were topped by Limousins at £1220 from Auchentibbert and 236.6p from Back o'Hill, while dairy bullocks peaked at £1115 and 184.3p from Creechan Park.

DUE to a lack of grass caused by the prolonged dry spell, there was a sharp increase in numbers forward at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale of 1414 store cattle where prices fell sharply as a result of buyers' concerns about the rising cost of fodder and the diversion of valuable animal feed into AD plants.

Averages dropped on the year as 732 bullocks averaged 210p per kg (-37.4p on the year), with 678 heifers at 205.9p (-35.5p). The sale reached 267.4p for 374kg Charolais cross heifers from 122 Main Street, Aberchirder, with heifers also hitting £1335 for a 632kg Charolais cross from Woodend, Muir of Ord.

Bullocks were headed up by Limousins at 262.9p for one at 388kg from Balgairn, Ballater, and £1420 for one weighing 692kg from Blackhillock, Keith.

Young bulls (four) sold to 182.7p and £770 for a 416kg Limousin from Mains of Wardhouse, Insch.

A show and sale of store cattle and weaned calves saw judge, Ronald Wilkie, of Tillyboy, Echt, pick out a 506kg Limousin cross heifer from J Gordon and Co, Waterside, Forbes, as his champion. She later sold to W and J Cameron, Burnside of Edingight, Grange, for £1260.

In reserve was a 388kg Limousin cross bullock from G and J Greenlaw, Balgairn, Ballater, which Mr Wilkie paid £1020 for.

Of the Orkney and Shetland cattle, it was a pair of 378kg Limousin heifers from Balfour Estates, Shapinsay, that topped at 246p while a 368kg Limmy bullock form the same home made 241p. Per head, a pair of 608kg Aberdeen-Angus bullocks form How Farms, Sanday, topped at £1330 while heifers reached £1260 for a 618kg Charolais from the same home.

Also on offer were 600 store lambs and feeding sheep, where Texels from Valdon, Maud, topped the 20 new season store lambs at £74.50.

Feeding ewes and rams (580) sold to £115 for Suffolks from Milton of Birness, Ellon.
