Carlisle
WITH grass beginning to green up, trade improved at Harrison and Hetherington's sale for smaller, longer keep cattle which sold 346 stores and 156 weaners, last week. 
All classes of store cattle sold sharper on the week and to a top of £1400 for a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Barnes, Hutton Roof, Penrith, whose run of cattle averaged £1378 and included the top priced bullock at £1365. 
Black and whites peaked at £1120 from Messrs Watson, Howrigg, Wigton. 
Likewise, all classes of weaned cattle were in demand and sold to £935 for Aberdeen-Angus bullocks from Messrs Copeland and Son, Kilfillan, Newton Stewart, with bulls to £880 for British Blues from Uskstar and heifers to £750 for Limousins from Low Garth. 
A couple of days later, a 1200-strong entry of breeding ewes was offered at the annual August Fair where Beltex gimmers from Robert Skelton, Newhall, Maryport, topped the trade at £305. The run of 207 continental gimmers from Newhall averaged £187.67.
The entry of 60 rams peaked at £570 for a two-shear Texel from Messrs Struthers, Greenbank, Carluke.

Stirling (UA)
UNITED Auctions sold 658 store cattle and young bulls at its Stirling centre, where a 328kg Limousin cross bullock from Dougall Estates topped the trade at 272.9p per kg. 
The 408 stots, which averaged 215.29p, also led the gross trade at £1350 for a 710kg Charolais cross from Wrights Houses. 
Averaging 205.79p, the 227 heifers peaked at 225.6p for a 430kg Limmy cross from Hilton of Beath as well as £1160 for a British Blue cross weighing 575kg from Corscaplie. 
The 12 dairy-bred bullocks levelled at 143.25p having sold to 178.7p and £940 from Grange of Lindores while the 11 young bulls averaged 192.7p having reached 207.8p and £1180 for a Charolais cross from Midlock. 
A large entry of cows saw 133 beef-bred average 122.29p and sell to 198.9p for a Simmental cross from Easter Greenhill and £1290 for Limousin crosses from Greenshields and Easter Greenhill. 
Dairy cows (12) averaged 90.9p and sold to 125p from Broughmore and £855 from Wester Mye.

ALL classes sold firmer than the previous event at Craig Wilson's sale of 314 store cattle, where 199 bullocks levelled at 208.7p per kg or £842.28, with 115 heifers at 204.2p or £861.83 and 12 dairy bullocks at 130.6p or £597.95.
Heifers peaked at 235p for Limousins from Back o’ Hill and £1225 for a Blonde from Low Wexford. 
Bullocks sold to 231p for Limousins from Busbiehill and topped the gross trade at £1315 for an Aberdeen-Angus from Clevance, while Friesian bullocks reached £790 and 153.4p off Benston.

Hexham
OF the three suckler herd dispersals at Hexham and Northern Marts, it was an entry from the 35-strong consignment from Robin and Martyn Archer, Carry House, Wark, that set a new centre record for a commercial outfit at £3500.
Making that price was a 2012-born Limousin cross bred at Quarry House which sold with her May-born calf by Carry House Lord to father and son team, Alistair and Logan Ewart, from Isle of Dalton, Lockerbie. 
It was, however, the 2011-born pure Limousin cow, Haltcliffe Glade, that topped the female entry at 4100gns when selling to James Pritchard along with her Jackal-sired surrogate calf at foot. 
The Powerhouse Italic-sired bulling heifer, Carry House Nova, sold to the same buyer for 3000gns, while the stock bull, Carry House Lord, by Ananas, topped the sale at 6900gns selling to Messrs Walton, Greyside, Hexham. 
The Carry House consignment cashed in at £2429 per commercial outfit. 
From Michael Kennedy, Birkside Farm, the 20-strong offering peaked at £2450 for a 2012-born Blue cow with her Limousin-sired heifer calf which sold to Messrs Robson, High West House, Tow Law, due to calve again this summer. The Kennedy entry averaged £1577 per outfit. 
The native-sired entry from Robbie and Paul Coulson, High Staward, Langley on Tyne, sold to £1950 when Philip and Fiona Scott, Westburnhope, Hexham, bought a 2013-born Hereford cross cow with her March-born Charolais cross bullock at foot. Two more similar lots realised £1920 as the High Staward entry averaged £1556.

LAWRIE and Symington sold 47 store cattle, on Tuesday, where Limousin bullocks topped the entry at £1120 for one weighing 500kg from the Firm of Gibsonhall Farm and 237p per kg for another at 400kg from TA Bissett and Son, Bishopton. 
Bullocks (24) averaged 226p while heifers (23) levelled at 211p having sold to £1050 for four 475kg Charolais crosses and 230p for a pair of 430kg Limmies, all from I and L Simpson, Knowhead of Duntrune.

Castle Douglas
DESPITE continuing fears over the availability of winter fodder, Wallets Marts defied the odds with one of the dearest trades witnessed in recent weeks at its anniversary show and sale of 745 store cattle on Monday. 
Celebrating 162 years of business conducted under the Wallets name, the show was judged by William Purdon whose champion was a 552kg Limousin bullock from P and M Gray, Eastfield, Symington, which Mr Purdon paid £1265 for. 
In reserve was another Limmy cross bullock, this time a 452kg entry from R Watson, Slatehouse, Moniaive, which sold for £1040. 
The first prize heifer, a 368kg Limousin cross from Culdoach, sold for £920. Limousins led the pens of four as the first prize pen of 569kg bullocks from Fagra sold for £1255 while the first prize pen of 417kg heifers from Mains of Collin realised £980.
Outwith the show, 563kg Simmental bullocks from Trolane topped at £1320 while a pen of Charolais crosses from M and G Barr, Meikle Kirkland, made 258.6p per kg as heifers averaged 214.4p (against 222.4p in 2017). 
Averaging 205.3p (against 212.3p last year), heifers sold to £1190 for a Simmental from Glenturk and 250p for Limousins from Culdoach. 
A small show of 16 OTM cattle averaged 112.5p, peaking at 141p and £1069.60 for a Limousin from Newton, Gatehouse.

A MIXED show of 235 store cattle at C and D Auction Marts met met a better trade than expected to top at £1240 for a Limousin heifer from F Gibson, Southwoodhead, Kirkpatrick Fleming.
