HARRISON and Hetherington's annual show and sale of North Country Cheviot wedder lambs attracted a great quality at the sale where the pre-sale show was judged by William McIntyre, West Scales.

He awarded first prize to a pen from RH Paton, Castle Crawford, which went on to sell for £57 per head but it was the third prize pen from Stirksfield Farms, Broughton, Biggar, that topped the sale at £58.

The second prize pen from RJ Menzies and Co, Chanlockfoot, Thornhill, realised £56 as the sale of 640 levelled at £49.02.

Thainstone

A TOTAL of 130 adult head of breeding cattle sold through Aberdeen and Northern Marts, last week, where Simmental cows with bull calves from the dispersal from Edintore, Keith, topped the entry at £2400 three times.

The dispersal from Wester Rarichie, Fearn, peaked at £2300 for an Aberdeen-Angus cross cow with bull calf at foot.

Heifers with calves hit £1800 for a Shorthorn cross with heifer calf from Upper Sauchen, Ordhead, and three Salers crosses from Rhevackin, Beauly, led the in-calf heifers at £1720 apiece.

BLOB Two days later, the company sold 909 store cattle which included a 138-strong entry of certified BVD free heifers and saw all classes sell sharper on the week with BVD free heifers easiest cashed.

They sold to average 232.8p per kg (+8.3p on the year), having sold to 308.6p for a pair of 486kg Simmentals from Law Farm, Insch, as well as £1550 for a 558kg Simmental from Berryleys, Grange.

Of the main store entry, a trio of Simmental heifers weighing 494kg from Nether Toucks, Stonehaven, topped at 267.2p while bullocks reached 255.8p for a pair of 432kg Limousins from Whitehouse, Lumphanan. Per head, Limousins from Roadside, Wick, led at £1475 for a 714kg bullock and £1440 for a 686kg heifer.

The 342 bullocks cashed in to average 214.8p with 428 heifers at 208p.

Also forward were 5428 sheep where store lambs continued to meet a strong demand as the 3170 from the islands peaked at £79 for Suffolk crosses from Kjemlea, Uphouse, while the 1028-strong mainland entry sold to £73 for Suffolks from Cormalet, Cairnie.

Ewes from the islands (442) sold to £105 for Suffolk ewes from Brekkavidur, Sandness, while feeding ewes and rams (598) sold to £107 for Texels from Brucewells, Netherley.

Stirling (UA)

AT United Auctions' sale of 1370 store and native-bred cattle as well as young bulls, it was a 218kg Simmental cross bullock from Arisaig that led the price per kg at 261.5p.

Bullocks also topped the gross trade at £1430 for a 672kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Burnhouse Bungalow as 849 cashed in to average 212.43p.

Glenkilrie headed up the heifer trade at 243.7p with a 435kg Limousin cross while a 682kg Charolais cross from Clydeside made £1380. The 457 heifers averaged 203.08p.

A Holstein Friesian cross weighing 554kg from Newpark headed up the 24 dairy-bred bullocks (which averaged 133.52p) at 199.5p and £1105.

Newpark also topped the 40 young bulls at 237p with an Aberdeen-Angus cross while a British Blue cross from Easter Greenhill made. The 40 young bulls levelled at 211.84p.

Averaging 129.53p, the 129 beef-bred cows sold to 191.9p for a Beef Shorthorn cross from Quixwood with a Simmental cross from Milton making £1490. Dairy-bred cows (30) levelled at 89.76p having sold to 133.4p from Nether Braco and £915 from Craigend.

In all, the 125 bullocks averaged 206.6p with 74 heifers at 200.3p.

The 47 OTM cattle saw cows sell to £1243 for a Limousin from Messrs Jackson, High Lees, as well as 154.5p for a Limousin from Messrs Dixon, The Thwaites.

Dingwall

AT the first of two store lamb sales at Dingwall and Highland Marts, last week, there was a quality trade which showed an increase on the week despite the 3491 lambs averaging £49.40, a drop of £2.20 on the year.

They reached £74 for a pen of Bleu du Maine crosses from Glenurquhart Farm, Cromarty, while a Cheviot gimmer from Davoch, Rogart, led the 275 ewes and feeding sheep at £76.

That same sale saw 799 lambs sell on behalf of Lewis Livestock Producers to average £29.61 (-81p on the year), having sold to £49 for Cheviots from 46a North Tolsta, Isle of Lewis.

The followed day featured a show and sale of Blackface wedder lambs where the first prize pen from DJ MacDonald, Braes, 13 Penichorran, Portree, and the second prize pen from Bochruben Farms, Torness, both sell for £54 per head.

The third prize pen from C Graham, 2 Mugeary, Glenmore, Portree, realised £52 but it was a pen of 13 ewe lambs from 13 Penichorran that topped the 3151 Blackies at £70.

With lambs generally lacking the size and bloom of last year, other breeds (661) sold to £61 for a pen of Cheviots from 4 and 5 Totescore, Portree.

UNITED Auctions sold 100 cattle and 1363 sheep at its recent sale, where bullocks levelled at 206p per kg and heifers averaged 200p.

Store cattle sold to £1180 for Charolais cross bullocks from Heylipol with heifers to £1100 for Aberdeen-Angus from Croish. Per kg, cattle from Ruiag topped at 284p twice for Limousin cross bullocks and 258p twice for Charolais cross heifers.

As well as selling breeding sheep (see separate report), the company sold store lambs to average £46.21 (+£4.19 on the year) and to a top of £78 for Suffolk crosses from 4 Kilkenneth.

AVERAGES were back on the year at Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale of 513 weaned calves and store cattle when 295 bullocks levelled at 249.8p per kg (-27.8p on the year) with 216 heifers at 221.7p (-40.5p).

They sold to 319.1p for a pen of Charolais cross bullocks weighing 235kg from Dunlichity, Farr, with heifers to 275p for a pen of 200kg Simmental crosses from Kilfinichen Farms, Mulls.

Limousin crosses from Fersit, Roy Bridge, topped the gross trade at £990 for a pair of 440kg bullocks and £880 for a 435kg heifer.

OTM cattle (six) sold to 100.8p and £670 for a Luing cow from Isle of Muck Farms, Isle of Muck.

BULLOCKS cashed in to average 204p per kg while heifers levelled at 191p and dairy-bred bullocks averaged 133p at Caledonian Marts' sale of 398 store cattle on Monday.

The sale peaked at 259p for bullocks from J and D Mitchell, Offers, Gargunnock, as well as £1200 for bullocks form A and A Black, North Woodend, Bonnybridge.

Heifers sold to 213p from WA MacKinnon, West Dron, Bridge of Earn, and £1060 from J Dunn and Co, Martnaham, Dalrymple.

Dairy bullocks hit 145p from M Crawford, Powguild, Cardenden, and £670 from W Baxter, Gryfeside, Kilmacolm.

A cow and calf from A Mitchell, Nether Glinns, Fintry, topped the breeding cattle at £1850.

Also sold were 3078 store lambs and feeding ewes, where Texels from R Denholm, Dykebrae, led the lambs at £75 and feeding ewes peaked at £58 for Texel crosses from J G Miller, Weels.

Portree

CATTLE sold ahead of expectations with quality bullocks in particular demand at Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale of 1388 weaned calves and store cattle at the annual district ballot show and sale.

Judging the show was Blair Duffton who awarded the championship to a nine-month-old Limousin cross bullock weighing 360kg from C and J Sutherland, Trien Croft, Carbost, which went on to top the gross trade at £1110. In reserve was a seven-month-old Limmy cross heifer from C Morrison, 5 Portnalong, Carbost, which tipped the scales at 320kg and led the heifer trade at £920.

Trien Croft also topped the price per kg at 424p with a 250kg Limousin cross bullock while a pen of 173kg Limousin cross heifers from 10 Stenscholl, Staffin, hit 369.9p.

Averages were back on the year as 724 bullocks averaged 249.7p (-16.7p) with 660 heifers at 223.1p (-33.1p).

Four young bulls sold to 255p for a 200kg Limousin cross from Brae Eynort, Carbost, and £900 for another from Meadle, Struan.

VENDORS were pleased with their trade at C and D Auction Marts' annual Rood Fair sale of store cattle where 597 were on offer.

Heifers topped the trade at £1330 for Simmentals from Palaceknow as well as 260p per kg for Limousins from Townfoot as the 257 heifers levelled at 202p.

Bullocks (274) averaged 214.3p having sold to £1190 for Charolais from West Lanegate as well as 241p for Limousins from Backburn.

The 46 dairy-bred bullocks peaked at 160.6p and £590 to average 143.4p, while 20 young bulls averaged 190p having sold to 242.9p and £940.
