Thainstone
WEANED calves were an excellent show for quality and were easily cashed at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ sale of 1625 stores. 
The 335 weaned heifers which averaged 224.1p per kg (-1.7p on the year)were  topped at 271.9p for a 320kg Charolais cross from Balgairn, Ballater and £1210 for a 522kg Charolais cross form Brucewells, Netherley.
Weaned bullocks (470) cashed in at 228.1p (-5.4p) and sold to 270.1p for a 374kg Limousin cross from Balgairn, and led the gross trade at £1260 for a pair of 556kg Charolais crosses from Auchnarrow, Glenlivet. 
Store bullocks (480) averaged 205p having sold to 285.5p for a 336kg Limousin from Mosside of Gight, Fyvie, and £1355 for a pair of 600kg Limousin cross from Nether Minmore, Glenkindie. 
The 337 heifers levelled at 201.5p as they peaked at 24.1p for a pair of 392kg Limousin crosses from Birkenburn, Keith and £1285 for a 632kg Charolais cross from Dallasbroughty, Dunphail. 
The pre-sale show judge, John Waddell, Powmyre, Glamis, found his champion in a 538kg Limousin cross bullock from Dunmaglass Estate, Inverness, that sold for £1260 to D Lumgair and Sons, Gask, Letham, while a 530kg Limousin cross from Messrs Duffton, Smith and Stuart, Sunnyhill, was heifer champion and realised £1580 to the same home. 
The firm also sold 5566 sheep of all classes, where 1420 store lambs peaked at £72 for Texels from Bogiefeulach, Tornaveen, with 1066 island lambs selling to £65.50 for Texels from Norgeat, Dale. 
Breeding sheep (1508) sold to £185 for Texel gimmers from Mains of Orchardtown, Udny, while 798 gimmers and ewes realised £105 for Shetland Cheviot gimmers from Rona, Ollaberry. Texels from Strath, Watten, led the 672 feeding ewes and rams at £130. 
The 3095 Shetland lambs and breeding sheep saw 2510 store lambs reach £73 for Texels from South Lea, Vidlin, while 585 island sheep peaked at £70 for Texel ewes and Suffolk rams from Tagon Farm, Voe.

Lanark
SOME 7300 store lambs and feeding ewes were forward at Lawrie and Symington’s show and sale of Blackface and Cheviot wedder lambs at a sale held in conjunction with Livestock Marketing (Borders). 
Judge, Hugh Jackson, The Boat, found his champions in a pen from George Irving, Mount Benger, which also won the best pen from the Border and Mid Lothian area. They topped the Blackie entry at £64. 
Best pen from Lanark and Peebles came from T Borland, Flemington, with a pen that realised £60, as the 4395 Blackie wedders levelled at £45.44 (+£3.24 on the year).
Mr Jackson choice of Cheviot winners was a pen from the Common family, Crossdykes, that made £65. 
The 1000 other breed lambs sold to £72 for Texels form Westfield, while the 1496 cast and feeding ewes hit £142 for Texels from the same home.

SOME 760 store cattle and yearling calves sold through Dingwall and Highland Marts’ Dingwall centre, where 425 bullocks averaged 207.2p per kg and 333 heifers levelled at 192.2p. 
Top price was 360p for a 250kg British Blue cross from Shewglie Farm, Glenurquhart, while a 690kg Limousin cross from Balvaird, Muir of Ord, led the gross trade at £1340. 
Bullocks also sold to £1260 for a 555kg British Blue cross from Udale Farm, Poyntzfield, Dingwall, with heifers to 234.4p for a 465kg Limousin cross from 217 The Doll, Brora. 
The pre-sale show judged by G Cowie, Cairnton, saw the junior continental title presented to a 485kg Limousin cross bullock from the J Munro and Son, Invercharron, Ardgay, which later sold for £1140. The senior continental winner, a 555kg British Blue cross bullock from Udale Farm, made £1260.
Averaging £45.05, the 6496 store lambs were topped at £78 for a pen of Cheviots from Burnthill, Thrumster, while 571 lambs from Lewis Livestock Producers averaged £42.92 having sold to £73.50 for Cheviots from Tigh An Rudha, Eoropie.

HEIFERS led the way at United Auctions’ sale of 1362 store and native-bred cattle as the 541 averaged 197.75p per kg having sold to 240p for a 400kg Limousin cross from Nether Glinns, and £1305 for a 625kg Charolais cross from Balbirnie.
The 740 bullocks levelled at 200.36p and peaked at 235.7p for a 448kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Scotstarvit, and £1270 for a 625kg Simmental cross from Coulshill. 
Black and white bullocks (81) averaged 128.03p and sold to 167p for a 455kg British Friesian from Hapland and £940 for a 630kg Holstein Friesian cross from Bandirran.
On Saturday, a good show of 438 breeding cattle sold to £3600 for a British Blue cross stock heifer with Limousin cross heifer calf at foot from Stuart Raeburn, Pressock.
Monday’s 7827 store and breeding sheep saw store lambs sell to £53.50 for Blackfaces from Rhiedorrach. Cheviot gimmers from 2 Toxside made £155.

QUALITY types met a firm demand at United Auctions’ sale of 680 weaned calves, stores and OTM cattle, where 392 bullocks averaged 215.1p per kg (-8.4p on the year) and 281 heifers at 204.6p (-8.9p). 
Bullocks led at 273.8p for a Limousin cross from Deershill, Cuminestown and £1390 for Charolais from Hilton of Culsh, New Deer, while heifers peaked at 237.2p for Limousin crosses from Loanhead, Logie Coldstone, and £1255 for Charolais crosses from Auchnascraw, Glenlivet. 
Champion at the pre-sale show was a 470kg Charolais cross bullock from WJ and M Hunter, West Cairnhill, which sold for £1200 or 255.3p to the judge, GS Smeaton, Cotton of Overstone.
Reserve was a 420kg Limousin cross from JK Hunter, Wedderburn, which made £1045 or 248.8p to Bill Cameron, Burnside of Edingight. 
Messrs McGillvary, Auchnascraw, Glenlivet, topped the pens of four with his winning bullocks weighing 541kg and selling for £1260 to the judge, while their heifers scaled 527kg and made £1170 to P McKilligan, Mahon.

A GOOD show of 1409 store lambs sold at improved rates through Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ where trade reached £67 for black lambs from Upper Latheron, Latheron. 
The 106 breeding sheep sold to £360 for a Texel shearling from Myrelandhorn, Kirk, while 143 ewe lambs cashed in at £47.07 having sold to £66 for Cheviots from Upper Puldagon Farm, Stirkoke.

Stirling (Cal)
ALL classes of cattle sold dearer to a large ringside of buyers at Caledonian Marts’ Stirling centre on Monday, where 801 suckled calves and store cattle were forward. 
Topping the trade at 397p and £1450 was the champion, a Limousin heifer from Haasside, while bullocks sold to 393p for a Limousin from the same home, and £1240 for a Simmental cross from HA Laird and Son, Auchmuir, Leslie. 
In all, bullocks averaged 204p and heifers levelled at 195p. 
Black and white bullocks levelled at 132p and sold to 145p and £850 from AH Drummond, Glenside, Stranraer. 
Judge, Alan Pettigrew, Faskine, Airdrie, awarded the reserve honours to Haasside’s spring-born Limousin bullock which later sold for £1200. 
Champion pen of four autumn-born bullocks from W and T Nelson, High Kilphin, Ballantrae, scaled 526kg and later sold for £1190, while the pen of four heifers was won by ML Wilson, Baluskie, Barrhill, which made £1100, £1080 and £1000. 
The entry of 2399 store lambs and feeding ewes peaked at £68 for Texels from Scott Cowan, Spinkill.

TRADE bucked the trend at Wallets Marts’ sale of 1452 suckled calves and store cattle where quality-bred cattle were dearer on the year.
The sale averaged 209.9p or £907.67 (-£20 on the year) with cattle weighing 5kg lighter on the year.
Trade reached £1260 for yearling Charolais cross bullocks from Messrs Williamson and Ross, Hillview, while heifers sold to £1240 for the champion at the pre-sale show, a 440kg Limousin heifer from J and A McCulloch, Glentoo, purchased by Messrs Taylor, Heatheryhall. 
Native steers were topped at £1225 for  Aberdeen-Angus crosses from T Robb, Trolane, while Angus cross heifers from Messrs Sheddan, Balgerran, sold for £1060. Angus cross bullocks reached 234.6p and the same breed of heifers sold to 207.9p from Shambellie Grange. 
Reserve was a 406kg Charolais cross bullock from M and G Barr, Meikle Kirland, that sold for £1100 or 271p to Messrs Wainwright, Todhall, while the best pen of four – 503kg heifers from Messrs Barbour, Carsegowan – made £1145 to Messrs Purdon, Straven House. 
In all, 708 continental bullocks averaged 218.3p or £966.51, while 580 continental heifers levelled at 204.8p or £852.05. 
The 122 native bullocks levelled at 193.1p or £876.27 with heifers at 183.5p or £774.88.

Ayr
ALL classes of breeding cattle were easily sold at Craig Wilson’s sale of 89 head, where a top price of £2200was paid for a Limousin heifer and calf from Perryston. 
Overall, some 27 heifers with calves at foot averaged £1564.81 and 15 cows and heifer calves balanced out at £1084.66. 
In-calf heifers (920) levelled at £1437.60 with the 19 bulling heifers cashing in at £849.17. 
Top priced calf amongst the 200-strong entry was £610 paid for a Limousin cross bull from J and R Mitchell, Fowler, while stirks peaked at £880 for a Charolais cross from A Cuthbertson, Stoneside.

SOME 125 organic store cattle sold through C and D Auction Marts, where 83 bullocks averaged 225p per kg with 42 heifers at 217.3p. 
They sold to 293.8p for Simmental heifers from Outer Blair that also realised £1170, while bullocks reached £1240 for more Simmies from Outer Blair as well as 272.7p for Limousins from Swinside. 
The 500 conventional cattle peaked at 245.8p for Limousin stots from High Auchneel and £1195 for British Blue bullocks form No 6 Howes. 
The 291 bullocks averaged 198.4p with 33 Holstein bullocks at 132.3p. 
The 176 heifers levelled at 187.7p, having sold to 218.7p for Limousins from Belridding and £1070 for Simmentals from Mid Locharwoods. 
A 136-strong entry of breeding cattle sold to £2200 for a Limousin with bull calf from Garmartin.
