Dingwall

HEADING up Dingwall and Highland Marts' second annual district ballot show and sale of weaned calves was the champion, an eight-month-old Limousin bullock weighing 375kg from the Firm of J Munro and Son, Invercharron, Ardgay, which realised £1120.

Picked out by the judge, Ian Miller, from Miller Plant, in reserve was a five-month-old Charolais cross heifer weighing 385kg from Mrs HJ Birnie, Guisachan, Tomich, wich led the heifer entry at £1000 and 294.1p per kg.

A 250kg Limmy cross bullock from Edderton, Invergordon, topped the prices per kg at 312p.

With well-presented lots firmly bid for to sell at a similar trade to last year, while weathered sorts were more difficult to sell, averages included 782 bullocks at 227.6p (against 236.9p last year) and 558 heifers at 218.6p (226.4p).

Thainstone

THE reserve champion from Stephen Duncan, Achdregnie, Glenlivet, topped the sale of weaned calves at Aberdeen and Northern Marts when the 10-month-old Limousin cross heifer weighing 376kg sold to Steven Smith, The Byre, Sunnyhill Croft, Turriff, for £1350.

The champion, as judged by Will Hamilton, Bee Edge, Coldingham, also sold to Mr Smith, this time for £1280. That was an 11-month-old Limousin cross bullock from the Robertsons at Fodderletter, Tomintoul, which tipped the scales at 482kg.

Outwith the show, heifers topped the weaned calf trade at 340.2p and £1320 for a Limmy cross heifer weighing 388kg from Achdregnie as the 222 weaned heifers levelled at 219.1p.

Levelling at 225.7p, the 430 weaned bullocks reached 267.5p for a 400kg Limousin from Fodderletter as well as £1285 for ***.

Among the store cattle, which sold sharper on the week, it was a pen of four Charolais crosses weighing 492kg from Greeny, Dounby, that led at 251p as the 625 bullocks, which averaged 203.2p, also headed up the gross trade at £1415 for a 662kg Simmental cross from Marywell, Ballogie.

Store heifers (350) averaged 194.4p and sold to 238p for a Limousin cross from 2 Bogie Street, Huntly, and £1330 for another from Mowatseat, Craigievar.

CALVES were shown in good bloom but were lighter on the year – bullocks by an average 16kg per head and heifers by 8kg – at Craig Wilson's two-day sale of 2279, where the met one of the busiest ringsides for some time which resulted in an overall average that rose by 3.6p per kg on the year.

Spring-born calves sold to a top of 467p for a pen of 10 Salers cross heifers from Messrs Howatson, Risk Farm, as the 360 spring-born heifer calves averaged 258.8p (+0.8p on the year) or £797.58.

Spring-born bullocks (561) levelled at 235.8p (+4.7p) having sold to 285.4p for a pen of Limousin crosses from J and S Cannon, Redbrae.

Autumn-born calves sold to £1250 for a Limousin cross bullock from G Milroy, Mains of Machermore, while heifers reached £1190 for another from Andrew Hyslop, Gowlands.

The 760 autumn-born bullocks levelled at 216.6p (-0.2p) or £906.04 while 599 autumn-born heifers averaged 205.8p (-2.8p) or £797.58.

BULLOCKS led the trade at Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale of 293 weaned calves and store cattle, where the 183 bullocks levelled at 196.8p per kg with 104 heifers at 174.7p.

Bullocks peaked at 244.9p for a pen of Limousin crosses weighing 245kg from Blarmafoldach, Fort William, as well as £970 twice – for a 550kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Muirshearlich, Banavie, and again for a 560kg Simmental cross from 2 and 3 Kinloid, Arisaig.

Limousin crosses topped the heifer entry at 222.2p for a pen of 225kg heifers from Keppoch Farms, Roy Bridge, and £860 for one weighing 495kg from Drumbuie, Drumnadrochit.

Young bulls (6) sold to 236.4p for a 165kg for a Limousin cross from Branault, Acharacle, and £470 for a 370kg Simmental cross from 1 Kinsadel, Morar.

A STRONG show of 1071 quality-bred suckled calves was on offer to a strong force of buyers at United Auctions, where bullocks levelled at £619 per head (-£9 on the year) or £230p per kg (-5p) while heifers averaged £552 (+£17) r 223p (+6p).

Charolais crosses from Lephinkill topped the gross trade at £1170 for bullocks and £1070 for heifers, with Charolais cross bullocks from Ederline Estate leading the bullock price per kg at 294p.

Simmental cross heifers from Keilator topped the overall price per kg at 304p.

ON Tuesday, Harrison and Hetherington sold 286 suckled calves at its annual show and sale, where Limousins from Messrs Richardson, Purdomstone, topped the trade at £1280 for a bullock and £1120 for a heifer.

Per kg, Charolais bullocks from Glenshimmerock hit 299.1p while heifers sold to 274.5p from Hunthills as bullocks levelled at £848.59 with heifers at £753.76.
