FEMALES from Anthony Hartley, Turner Hall, dominated Harrison and Hetherington's sale of mountain ewes at Broughton, which attracted an entry of 2500 ewes and gimmers.

Leading the trade at £220 per head was a pen of Herdwick gimmers which sold to C Hartley, Barr Field, which Anthony's champion pen of females, as judged by Tom Rebanks, was a pen of Herdwick ewes which sold to Hetty Hutchinson, Forrest in Teesdale, for £110.

Turner Hall also landed the Swaledale ticket with a pen that sold to D Nesbitt, Wasdale, for £75 as the entry cashed in to average £37.48 (-£7.18 on the year).

A LARGE entry of 710 store cattle met a similar trade to the previous week at Harrison and Hetherington, where a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Roe, Croft House, Carlisle, topped at £1325, while bullocks sold to £1300 for a British Blue cross from Messrs Holliday, Broathill, Lockerbie.

The entry of 251 weaned calves sold slightly dearer thanks to extra buyers forward. Limousin bulls from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, led at £1160 while bullocks and heifers both hit £900 for Limousin crosses from Messrs Cowx and Son, Hudscales.

LIMOUSIN crosses headed up the price per kg while Aberdeen-Angus crosses led the gross trade at United Auctions' sale of 1492 store cattle last week.

Per k418kg heifer from Goddens topped at 239.2p while bullocks reached 238.1p for one weighing 252kg from Porterstown. A 619kg Angus cross bullock from West Newton Balquhancal led the gross prices at £1360 while a 666kg heifer from West Lethans made £1290.

The 895 bullocks cashed in to average 205.94p with 515 heifers at 195.45p, while the 36 black and while bullocks averaged 129.47p having sold to 187.1p from Meikle Camoquhill and £860 from Newpark.

Levelling at 196.9p, the 46 young bulls sold to 215.3p for a Limousin cross from Gateside as well as £1370 for a Simmental cross from Innerwick.

Among the cast cows, the 216 beef-bred sorts averaged 114.36p having peaked at 196.6p for a Salers cross from Poldean and £1370 for a Simmy from Innerwick.

WELL-BRED cattle carrying flesh met a keen demand but the averages were hindered by a large proportion of lighter cattle lacking flesh meeting a selective demand at United Auctions' sale of 362 store and OTM cattle, which included organic cattle.

The 56 organics peaked at 256.9p per kg for a pen of six Aberdeen-Angus cross bullockss weighing 255p per kg from Dalnavert, Kingussie, with the same home leading the heifer gross trade at £1050 with a 485kg Angus cross. Limousin crosses from Swinside Farms, Selkirk, led the other sections at£1120 with a 485kg stot and 233.7p with 385kg heifers.

After the Angus at 256.9p, bullocks also topped the gross trade at £1285 for a 620kg Limousin cross from Seggiecrook, Grange, as the 193 bullocks averaged 206.4p.

Heifers (138) sold to average 199.3p, reaching 235.3p per kg for five 355kg Limousin crosses from Lynemore, Strathdon, as well as £1270 for a 635kg Simmental cross from Sunside, Wardhouse.

A lean show of 31 cast cows saw Simmental crosses top at £1010 from Upper Blairnain, Aberlour, as well as 165p from Roadside of Auchinderran, Keith.
