Hexham

A slightly decreased entry of 1017 spring-born suckled calves was forward for Hexham and Northern Marts' Bellingham show and sale at Hexham, where the judge, Rhys Millichap from Mid-Glamorgan backed his decision and bought his choice of champion at £1500.

This was the first prize Limousin cross heifer from Eric and Mark Armstrong, Harlow Bower, Whitfield. It was sired by a bull bought from Messrs Holliday, Langwathby and bred from a British Blue cross suckler cow.

Matching that top price was the reserve champion and first prize British Blue cross heifer from Dan Kemp, Keepwick, which was bought by Messrs Bell, Lockerbie.

MORE than 1200 head of store cattle and 164 cast cows and forward cattle were forward for United Auctions' weekly sale at Stirling, where bullocks averaged 205.22p per kg, heifers cashed in at 193.48p and black and white bullocks levelled at 131.09p.

Bullocks (732) peaked at 235.50p per kg for a 485kg Charolais cross from High Glentriplock and £1340 for a 688kg Shorthorn cross from Lawton.

The small entry of Black and White bullocks was topped by a 481kg Holstein from Mains which made 155.90p or £750.

British Blues from Easter Greenhill topped the 416 heifers at 240.40p for a 470kg entry and £1280 for a 546kg heifer.

A good entry of 150 beef cows sold to 180.40p for a Simmental cross from Birchburn and £1330 for a Limousin cross from Ballinloan, to level at 110.08p.

Dairy cows (12) averaged 91.90p having sold to 133.80p and £745 for a Holstein Friesian cross from Gartentruach.

A BETTER show for quality saw plainer sorts still hard to cash at Craig Wilson's sale of 585 store cattle at their Ayr market where a top price of £1510 was achieved for a Limousin bullock from Lauren McFadzean, Barneil or 234.8p for a pen of Limousin bullocks from Beoch, Maybole.

Heifers peaked at 235.4p and £1330 for a Limousin from Laigh Borland.

By the end of the day, 328 bullocks averaged 204.8p or £934.23; 49 Friesian bullocks levelled at 126.6p or £590.11p and

208 heifers averaged 195.8p or £828.75.

Friesian bullocks from Stevenston topped the dairy bullocks at 145.8p per kg or £790 per head.

Also forward were1833 sheep comprising 425 breeding sheep and 1408 store lambs. Breeding sheep peaked at £91 for a pen of two-crop Mule ewes from Middlehouse, with lambs selling to £71 for Texels from Dalmorton Farm.

A SMALLER entry of suckled calves due to the effects of the dry summer was forward for Harrison and Hethertington's annual show and sale judged by Allan Brown, Park House Farm, Cockermouth.

Supreme was a bullock from SG Benson, Horrace Farm, Pennington, with the reserve presented to the second prize entry to the champion from M and D Hatton, Knott End, Broughton Mills.

Top price was £1000 paid for a 11 ½-month-old Blonde bullock from Alison Ellwood, Everard Lodge, Ulverston, followed by the second prize bullock, a British Blue, from Messrs Hatton which made £950.

A GOOD following of mainland buyers was in attendance at United Auctions' sale of 1880 lambs and sheep at Lochboisdale, where lambs averaged £42.35 (+£2.38 on the corresponding sale last year).

All classes fully maintained the level of last week's sale at Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale of 274 weaned calves and store cattle.

The 154 stot calves averaged 208.5p per kg and sold to 281.8p for a 252kg Limousin cross from Shop Farm, Scotscalder and £1040 for a 475kg Limousin cross from Winless, Lower Sibster.

Averaging 197.1p, the 109 heifer calves topped the gross trade at £1100 for a 555kg Limousin cross from Feabait Farm, Muir of Ord, as well as 255p for a pair of Charolais crosses weighing 300kg from Castle Grant Home Farm, Grantown-on-Spey.

Of the 11 young bulls forward, trade peaked at £840 from 387 Elphin, Lairg, while an in-calf Shorthorn cow from 43 Farlary, Rogart, topped the breeding cattle at £840.

OTM prime and feeding cows (87) levelled at 99.9p and sold to 171.7p for a 600kg Limousin cross and £1070 for an 800kg Simmental cross both from 192 The Doll, Brora. The three OTM bulls reached £970 for a 1170kg Simmental from Easter Duthil, Carrbridge.

DINGWALL and Highland Marts' annual show and sale at Lochmaddy attracted an entry of 329 weaned calves and store cattle, 10 breeding cattle and 35 OTM.

Judge J Gracey, Moss Side of Gight, found his champion in the first prize heifer from A Ferguson, 8 Clachan Sands, which scaled 360kg and sold for £950. The reserve from H MacDonald, 1 Knockline, was the first prize bullock which sold for the same money having passed the weighbridge at 435kg.

Overall, 175 weaned bullocks averaged 221.2p having sold to 260.9p per kg for a 345kg Limousin cross from Old Inn, Tigharry, and £95 twice for a 435kg Limousin cross from 1 Knockline, Bayhead and for a 425kg Limousin cross from Old Inn.

Weaned heifers (133) peaked at 263.9p and £950 for a 360kg Limousin cross from 8 Clachan Sands, Lochmaddy, to average 205.6p.

The 11 store bullocks averaged 174.5p having sold to 222.9p for a 350kg Limousin cross from 7 Tigharry, Lochmaddy, and £860 for a 430kg Limousin cross from 1 Knockline, Bayhead. The 10 store heifers peaked at 189.2p for a 370kg Charolais cross from Crois Moirag, Lochmaddy and £720 for a 450kg Highland cross from 25 Balemore, Bayhead. They averaged 161.8p.

All classes of cattle were sharper on the week at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' massive store cattle sale of more than 1400 head last week, which included a show and sale of Shetland and West Highland weaned and suckled calves judged by Kevin Riach, Barns, Crathes.

Overall champion and best Shetland calf was a 332kg Charolais bullock from LJM and JIM Wishart, Bakkanlee, Whitesness which realised £910 to the judge. Best West Highland calf was a 316kg Charolais cross from A Kerr, Barvas Glebe Farm, Lower Barvas, Isle of Lewis which sold for £720 to W and D Moir Livestock, Newmill, Rathen.

By the end of the day 549 bullocks averaged 212.6p per kg with the 361 heifers cashing in at 205.1p. Charolais crosses topped the price per kg section in both the steer and heifer sections with the former lead by a three 422kg Charolais crosses from Waulkmill, Corse. Heifers peaked at 252p for a 496kg Charolais cross from Aldie Farm, Tain.

Limousins from Backmuir, Keith, gross trade with a 634kg stot making £1440 and a 624kg heifer selling for £1400.

A good entry of Aberdeen Angus and native-bred cattle were forward which saw 153 bullocks level at 205.3p having peaked at 230.2p for a pen of eight 278kg Angus crosses from Home Farm, Pitmedden and £1400 for a 740kg entry of the same breed from Burnside of Pitcaple, Inverurie.

The 131 heifers in the same section sold to 220.3p per kg for a 454kg Angus cross from Stirlinghillock, Whitecairns and £1400 for a 692kg entry from Ord, Rhynie. They averaged 191.8p.

Meanwhile the entry of 134 weaned bullock calves and 100 heifer calves from Shetland and the Isle of Lewis averaged 229.4p and 212.1p respectively. Bullocks peaked at 274.6p for a 244kg Limousin cross from Barvas Glebe Farm, Isle of Lewis and £825 for a 364kg Limousin cross from Pobis Geo, Muckle Roe.

A 252kg Blonde cross from Gillarona, Muckle Roe, topped the heifers at 269.8p with a 398kg Charolais cross from Exnaboe, Virkie, hitting £800

Not to be outdone, the seven bulls sold 187.8p for a 426kg Shorthorn from Gaskbeg, Laggan and £830 for a 518kg Limousin cross from Coxton, Cornhill.

The entry of 4038 store lambs, island and breeding sheep cashed the same day sold at increased rates to a good ringside of buyers.

Topping the 1133 store lambs at £69 on two occasions were Texels from Balnault, Crathie, while the 736 island lambs sold to £68 for similar lambs from Norton, Dounby.

Among the 291 island sheep, a Texel ram from Findlins, Hillswick, led at £310 and three-year-old Texel ewes from Garvelside, New Pitsligo, topped the 956 breeding ewes and gimmers at £200.

Texel shearlings from Lost Farm, Strathdon, topped the 70 breeding rams at £420 twice, while feeding the 852 feeding ewes and rams sold to £101 on two occasions, firstly for Texel rams from Tofthills, Clatt, and for Border Leicester rams from Westside of Kingsford, Alford.

A GREAT show of 706 Lakeland suckled calves was forward for Mitchells' annual show and sale at Cockermouth where calves were shown in fine form.

Judge Richard Manchester found his champion in a Limousin steer from S Hardisty and Son, How Hall, which went on to sell for £1140, while the reserve, a heifer of the same breed from B and J Hodgson, Woodend Farm, topped the trade at £1180.

Limousin bullocks sold to £1100 from N Aitchison, Kershopefoot, Newcastleton; Angus bullocks sold to £1080 from R Moscrop & Son, Border Rigg, Bewcastle and Shorthorns bullocks peaked at £990 from B Cheesbrough, Lanehead, Kirkcambeck. Top price amongst the Blue Greys was £970 from ME and TR and KM Wallace, Farney Shield, Hexham.

On Tuesday, the firm had an entry of 8108 sheep of all classes which included the annual consignment of 800 lambs from PM Smith, Cocklakes House, Troutbeck, Penrith, that sold to £67.

Top price was £83.50 paid for Texels from West Farm.

Breeding rams sold to a top of £700 twice for Texel ram lambs from AR Bell, Kirkton, both of which were purchased by Quarry House.

ON Monday, Harrison and Hetherington, staged their annual Luke Fair sale of store cattle which saw a entry of 657 sell to £2050 for a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside purchased by Messrs Cooper, Broughton In Furness.

Steers were topped at £1515 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Maughan, Ash Garth, Great Asby, bought by David Barker, Scarborough.

Steers averaged £1106.05 (+£40.31 on the year) and heifers averaged £955.12 9 (-£6 on the year).

More than 150 cattle sold between £1200 and £2050, with more than 100 of these selling at in excess of £1300.

The consignment of 60 Limousin cross and British Blue cross steers and heifers from Terrys Farm averaged £1351.10, while the consignment of 40 from Ash Garth cashed in at £1290.41.
