Lanark
LAWRIE and Symington sold 723 store and breeding cattle, last week, where Limousin cross bullocks topped the trade at £1240 from Allfornought and 228p per kg from Powflatts. 
With bullocks averaging 201.7p, heifers levelled at 192.3p and reached £1195 for a British Blue from South Flakefield and to 212p for a Limousin from Bickerto Hall. 
Dairy-bred cattle topped at £895 from South Gilmerton to average 141p.
A cow with calf from South Stane led the breeding cattle at £1550. 
A few days later the company sold 2739 sheep, including 1803 store lambs which sold to £73 for Texels from Kirkton of Crawford, with the 1180 Blackface lambs to £63 from Kirkland Farming, Kirkconnel. 
Cast sheep (939) saw ewes peak at £129 for Beltex from Westfield which also led the ram trade at £86 while hill ewes sold to £60 from Calla and rams.

Carlisle
A SMALLER entry of 576 store cattle sold far sharper on the week at Harrison and Hetherington as the sale peaked at £1350 for a British Blue cross bullock from Messrs Beaty, Durdar, Carlisle. 
Heifers sold to £1345 for Limousin crosses from Messrs Whitfield, Orton Rigg, Carlisle. 
A couple days later, the company held its monthly sale of beef breeding cattle which sold to £2900 from the run of British Blue and Limousin cows with calves from Messrs McAlister, Wester Thomaston, which averaged £2638.
Messrs Atkinson, Meadow View, sold a British Blue cow and calf for £2700.
Included was a dispersal of Blonde females with calves from Messrs Bradley, Northrigg Hill, which peaked at £1950.

The weekly sale of store lambs was mixed with a top of £76 paid for a pen of Texel crosses from Messrs Ritson, Triermain, Gilsland, with Mules to £57.50 from Messrs Noble, Burblethwaite, Wigton.

Dingwall
ALL classes met a slight increase in value at Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale of 250 weaned calves and store cattle, last week, where 124 store bullocks averaged 213.7p per kg and 121 store heifers levelled at 198.8p.
Bullocks headed up the trade at 292.3p for a 260kg Beef Shorthorn cross from Alvie Farms, Kincraig, and £1205 for a pen of 575kg Simmental crosses from Ballone, Abriachan.
The heifers peaked at 265.3p for a 245kg Charolais cross from 1 Obbe Road, Leverburgh, and £1115 for a Charolais cross weighing 490kg from Lyne of Urchany Farm, Nairn.
Five young bulls sold to £910 from 87 Torrobole, Lairg, while the six breeding cattle reached £1580 for a British Blue cross cow with heifer calf from 1 Obbe Road. 
OTM prime and feeding cows (35) averaged 103.5p and sold to 177.3p and £1170 for a 660kg Luing from 199 Lednabirichen, Dornoch.
Later in the week, the firm sold 5736 breeding and feeding sheep which met a good steady trade throughout. 
The 751 gimmers averaged £89.14 and sold to £140 gross on four occasions – for Texel crosses from Smerral Farm, Bower, and Balmaglaster Farm, South Laggan; crosses from 12 Annat, Torridon; and Cheviot Mules from 134 West Langwell, Rogart.
Breeding ewes (3775) levelled at £57.23 and sold to £120 gross for Cheviots from both Hillhead, Elgin, and Rhifail, Avoch.
Averaging £36.17, the 884 feeding ewes sold to £81 for a Cheviot from 134 West Langwell, while 21 rams peaked at £260 for a Suffolk from 192 The Doll, Brora.
Wedders (31) levelled at £46.65 and sold to £67 for a Cheviot from Inchbae Farm, Garve, with 274 lambs realising £60 for Cheviots from Rhannich Farm, Edderton.

Broughton
A TOP price of £60 per head was paid at Harrison and Hetherington's sale of store lambs and feeding sheep at Broughton where, despite a mixed show for quality on offer to a large ringside of buyers, demand for lambs was good. 
Topping the trade was a pen of 17 Beltex cross lambs from Clare and Lee Whitaker, Moorlands Cottage, Kirkby in Furness.

Newcastleton
HARRISON and Hetherington held its annual two-day sale of Blue Grey cattle where heifers went under the hammer on day one, where cattle were in condition and sold a little easier than at the same sale last year but ahead of expectations. 
With buyers from as far afield as the Shetland Isles, Cornwall and Northern Ireland, trade reached £1720 on two occasions for two pens of four in-calf heifers from Messrs Wallace, Farney Shield, Hexham, selling to Adderstonshields Farming, Hawick, and Bridgewater and Wood, Langholm. 
Bulling heifers reached £1140 for a pen of five from Messrs Kyle, Spout Bank, Brampton, which sold to Messrs Anderson, Berwickshire. 
Cows with calves hit £1320 from Messrs Harding, Nickies Hill, Brampton, with calves to £880 from Messrs Hogg, Milnholm, Langholm. 
The offering of Blue Grey, Galloway and continental bullocks on day exceed all expectations as Blue Grey bullocks sold to a very slight decline on the year with all cattle easily sold. 
Trade peaked at £985 for a Simmental cross bullock from Messrs Paterson, Hopsrig, Langholm, with Blue Greys to £510 for a pen from Messrs Story, Crookburn.

Thainstone
ALL classes of store lambs were dearer with a full ringside of buyers at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale of 5055 store sheep, last week.
The 1767 store lambs from the mainland peaked at £75 for Texels from Lower Humster, Wick, while 1283 lambs from the islands sold to £68 for Texels from South Breck, Burray. 
Of the 128 ewe lambs forward, Beltex crosses from Honeyneuk, Maud, topped at £90, while the 746 breeding gimmers and ewes sold to £140 for Texel cross gimmers from Newton of Crathie, Ballater. 
Island sheep (395) reached £75 for Texel cross ewes from Grunnafirth, North Nesting, and a Suffolk shearling from Bogfon, Maryculter, led the 131 breeding rams at £620.
Beltex ewes from Balmaleedie House, Marykirk, topped the 605 feeding ewes and rams at £138.
On Friday, the firm sold 1341 store cattle and four young calves, which saw 292 weaned calf bullocks average 245.3p with 265 weaned calf heifers at 243.1p.
In the pre-sale show, judged by William Moir, Home Farm Cairness, Fraserburgh, the overall championship was awarded to a five-month-old, 252kg Limousin heifer from Gordon Cameron, Newton Cottage, Acharacle, which later sold for £4000 to Rebecca Stuart and Steven Smith, Sunnyhill, Turriff. The reserve honours went to a seven-month-old, 368kg Limousin cross bullock from George Macarthur, Mid Fleenas, Little Mill, Nairn, which made £1750 to the same buyers.
Outwith the show, heifer calves topped at 939.8p and £2500 for a 266kg Limousin cross from Newton Cottage, Acharacle, while bullock calves peaked at 562.1p and £1900 for a 338kg Charolais cross from West Cairnhill, Culsalmond.
Among the store cattle, 383 bullocks cashed in at 205.7p and 376 heifers levelled at 203.2p. Heifers topped at 251.1p for a pen of three 446kg Simmental crosses from Culquhassen, Glenluce, while a 664kg Charolais cross bullock from Mill of Gellan, Aboyne, led the gross trade at £1390.  
Bullocks asold to 238.2p per kg for a pen of three 468kg Limousin crosses, with heifers to £1310 for a 612kg Limousin cross from 6 Forestry Holdings, Cairnie. 
Young bulls (25) averaged 218.1p and sold to 262p per kg for a pen of three 332kg Charolais crosses from Cornceres, Anstruther, and £910 gross for a Simmental cross from Upper Achnagorth, New Byth.

Stirling (UA)
SOME 1066 store cattle sold through United Auctions' Stirling centre, last week, when 570 bullocks averaged 204.9p per kg and 463 heifers cashed in 194.47p.
Bullocks topped the trade at 232.6p for a 374kg Limousin cross from Auchnotteroch and £1260 for a 642kg Limousin cross from Dalchalloch, while heifers reached 222.8p for a 404kg Limousin cross from Laggan Park, and £1140 for a similar beast weighing 596kg from Over Kellie.
The 33 black and white bullocks levelled at 134.59p and sold to 159.3p and £825 for a 518kg Holstein Friesian cross from Mosshead.
Averaging 104.75p, the 113 beef cast cows reached 163.50p for an Aberdeen-Angus cross from Mountquhanie and £1450 for a Charolais cross from Gateside. The 10 dairy types levelled at 76.85p and peaked at 89.4p for a Holstein Friesian cross from Broughmore and £685 for the same from Gateside. 
On Saturday, UA sold 675 commercial breeding cattle at its October sale where a Limousin cross heifer with bull calf at foot from The Ross topped at £2900, while cows with calves reached £2000 for a Limousin cross with bull calf from West Park. 
The entry in the Luing ring peaked at £1700 for in-calf heifers from Wester Jawcraig.

  • It was the champion from the McNee family, Woodend, that topped United Auctions' show and sale of 1991 suckled calves on Monday. 

The Limousin cross heifer weighing 352kg sold for 340.9p per kg or £1200 to the judge, Stephanie Dick. 
The reserve, a 282kg British Blue cross bullock from D and I Richardson, Upper Samieston, led the bullock trade at 319.1p while a Charolais bullock from Assloss made £1150. 
In all, the 1238 bullocks levelled at 341.9p with 752 heifers at 228.27p.

Hexham
A GOOD entry of breeding females, including three local dispersals, was on offer at Hexham and Northern Marts where David Walton, of Greyside, Newbrough, judged the 160-strong entry of heifers, either in-calf or with calf at foot. 
His champion was a British Blue heifer bred from a Limousin cross mother with her Limousin-sired bullock calf at foot from Messrs Foley, Mirlaw House, which sold to £3100 for John Dobson, White Kirkley, Frosterley in Weardale. 
In reserve and selling to Nick and Andrew Oliver, Cawfields, was a three-quarter Limousin heifer with her Limmy-sired bull calf from Richard Johnson and Sons, West Wharmley, Hexham. 
Matching that top of £3100 was a British Blue cross heifer with calf form Messrs Tindale, Paradise, Shadforth. 
The sale was bolstered by three dispersals, where the 40-strong entry of cows with calves from Messrs Stephenson, West Mill Hills, Haydon Bridge, topped at £2750 for Limousin cross cows with Limousin-sired calves at foot by Guards Lakeland. The seven in-calf heifers from West Mill Hills hit £1880 for an April, 2016-born heifer. 
Some 40 cows with calves sold from Messrs Gowland, Allergill, Stanhope in Weardale, and to a top of £3500 for a British Blue cross heifer with her January-born heifer at foot by a Limousin bull. 
The offering of Limousin cross cows with Limousins-sired calves from D and I Wallace, Bridgeford, Bellingham, reached £2000 twice – firstly for a five-year-old with her second at foot, an April-born bullock, and diagnosed five months in calf, and again for a similar outfit with slightly younger heifer calf. 
The entry of in-calf heifers peaked at £1740 for a pen of four black three-quarter Limousin crosses from Ian and Anne Hamilton, Claywalls, which sold at that price to Messrs Warnock, Dreva, Lanarkshire.

Bullocks sold to 253.3p for a pen of three 391kg Charolais crosses from Leschangie, Inverurie, and £1250 for similar bullocks from Whinbrae, Huntly. The same home led the heifer trade at 215.5p and £1240 for 525kg Charolais crosses. 
The 17 OTM cattle sold to 130.2p for a Limousin from Mid Fodderletter, Tomintoul, and £1020 for a Shorthorn from Auchorties, Keith.

  • On Saturday, the judge from the show of spring-born calves, Steven Smith, from Sunnyhill, backed his decision to buy the champion and reserve which both came from Loanhead, Logie Coldstone. 

The former was a Limousin cross heifer weighing 365kg which was knocked down for £2100 to top the sale or 575.3p, while the reserve, a Limousin cross bullock weighing 370kg, led the bullock trade at £1500 or 405.4p. 
Charolais crosses headed up the pens of four section as the best bullocks form Broadland Farm, Cairnie, sold for £860 or 266.3p at a weight of 323kg, while the best pen of heifers came from Raws, Dufftown, and sold for £930 or 243.4p weighing 382kg. 
With 513 bullocks averaging 239.4p and 413 heifers at 228.9p, a heifer from Fodderletter Farms, Tomintoul, topped the overall price per kg at 588.2p.

A MIXED show for quality was forward at Craig Wilson's sale of 365 store cattle at Ayr, where trade was similar on the previous week's sale. 
Trade reached £1275 for a Limousin bullock from Middleton, Newton Mearns, and 250.8p per kg for a pen of Charolais bullocks from Barskelly, while heifers peaked at £1140 or 221.4p for a Limousin from Middleton.
In all, 180 bullocks averaged 204.8p or £863.33, while 127 heifers levelled at 194.2p or £828.23. 
The 58 Friesian bullocks averaged 132.1p or £580.18 and topped at £900 and 174.8p for Norwegian Reds from Knockrivoch. 
A smaller show of 880 store lambs sold slightly sharper on the week and topped at £71 for a pen of Texels from Messrs Allan, Arnsow Farm, Kirkmichael.

AT Harrison and Hetherington's annual show and sale of suckled calves, Messrs Orr, from Lower Greenhill, judged and awarded the champion and reserve ticket to cattle from Messrs Cairns and Logan, South Riccalton. 
The champion, a Limousin cross bullock, sold for £870 while the reserve, a Limmy cross heifer, made £790. 
Outwith the show, the sale reached £1095 for Aberdeen-Angus cross heifers from Messrs Hamilton, Earlside, with heifers also reaching 276.9p from Scart Farm, Bridge of Weir, and cashing in to average 222.4p (+5p on the year).

AT Hopes Auction Company's annual show and sale of suckled calves, cattle from Greystoke Castle Farms, dominated the pre-sale show.
Tapped out as champion by judge, John Melin, Long Preston, was a Charolais heifer which he later bought for £1500. The same home took the reserve honours with a Charolais bullock. 
Among the store cattle, a Limousin steer from D Hodgson, Croft Farm, topped at £1365 while heifers sold to £1215 from Messrs Robinson, Bog Hall.

ALL classes of stock met a keen enquiry at United Auctions' sale of 1934 lambs and sheep at Dalmally, where the lamb entry consisted of mainly smaller, long-keeping sorts. 
They sold to £59 for Mules from Ormsary Farmers as well as 159p per kg for Texel crosses from the same home. The sale of lambs averaged £33.69 (+£5.45 on the same sale last year).

A CHAROLAIS bull from David Story, Greenburn, sold for £1220 to lead C and D Auction Marts' annual sale of hill-bred suckled calves on Saturday, where trade was strong for well-grown and well-presented cattle as averages improved on the year. 
Champion, as judged by A Graham, The Wreay, Wigton, was a Limousin bullock from Wanwood Partners, Wanwood Hill, which sold to DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton, for £1020. 
The reserve ticket went to a British Blue heifer from Messrs Roskell, Laverhay, which sold for £920, again to Messrs Harrison.

The 222 ewe lambs averaged £55.77 with 1532 store lambs at £53.94. The 311 prime lambs reached 156.7p per kg for 45kg Texels from Braeside, New Road, Mid-Clyth, and £73.50 for seven Suffolks weighing 53.6kg from East Durran, Castletown. 
Breeding sheep (492) to £350 for a Texel shearling ram from Stainland and Sibmister Farms, Castletown.

LIMOUSINS led the trade at Caledonian Marts' sale of 596 suckled calves and store cattle, on Monday, where a heifer from B Harper, Greenwells, California, made 312p per kg and a bullock from R Colquhoun, Barochan Cross, Houston, realised £1220. 
Limmies also led the heifer gross trade at £1150 from Messrs McFarlane, Addiewell, West Calder, while bullocks also sold to 272p for a Charolais from J McLaren, Murrayshall, Cambusbarron. 
Bullocks averaged 202p with heifers at 184p, while dairy-bred bullocks averaged 146p and sold to 160p and £700 from T Drummond, Low Barbeth, Ervie. 
The 2152 store lambs and feeding ewes sold sharper on the week as lambs hit £68 for a pen of Suffolk crosses from IO Warren, Coull, Isle of Islay. 
Ewes reached £66 for Texels from Borlick.
