LIMOUSINS from Nethermyres topped Lawrie and Symington's sale of 23 prime cattle at Forfar mart, when a bullock weighing 661kg sold for £1619.45 and a 528kg heifer made 268p per kg.

Bullocks (10) averaged 238p and also peaked at 246p for a 612kg Limousin from the same home, while the 13 heifers cashed in at 247p and sold to £1476.72 for a British Blue from Gask.

Averaging 164.4p (+1.8p), the 412 prime lambs reached 188.9p and £85 for Beltex from Cairnleith, while 202 cast ewes and rams sold to £100 for a Beltex from Glencairn.

Huntly

LAMBS sold easier on the week at United Auctions' sale of 681 new season lambs at Huntly, last week, when a 38kg Texel from the Sutherlands of Sibmister and Stainland Farms, Thurso, topped at 176p per kg and a 60kg Texel from Cranna Bridge, Aberchirder, made £84.

Cast ewes (700) sold slightly less apart from the very best of continental types, with a top price of £113 paid for Suffolks from Bogs of Paithnick.

Cockermouth

TEXELS headed up Mitchell Auction Company's sale of 1754 prime lambs at Cockermouth, where trade for SQQs was similar to last week, cashing in at 174.20p.

Topping the trade at £115 was a Texel lamb from TA Jefferson, Aspatria Hall, while another weighing 48kg from GW Hird, Westray, realised 237.5p per kg.

The same breed led the 445 cast ewes and rams, as a ewe from Burton House made £131 and a ram from Summerhill sold for £70.

Among the 53 prime cattle cattle, a top price of £1631.15 and 209.5p was paid for a Charolais bull from P and PI Walker and Son, Beech Croft, while

Leading the sale in price per kg and per head was a Charolais Bull shown by P & PI Walker & Son, Beech Croft achieving £1613.15 and 209.5p per kg purchased by TL Fell.

Thainstone

ABERDEEN and Northern Marts' sold 615 new season lambs at its Thainstone centre, last week, which saw 349 SQQs forward cash in at 158.7p per kg.

They sold to 177.1p for Texels from Sunnyside, Dudwick and £82 for the same from Mid Haddo, Fyvie.

In the cattle, 30 prime heifers averaged 210.7p and topped at 239p for a 490kg Limousin cross from Burnend, Forglen, while a 750kg Charolais cross bullock from Ladymill, Alford, made £1530.

Bullocks also sold to 217p twice for a 600kg Aberdeen-Angus and 570kg Aberdeen-Angus from Meikle Haugh, Keig, while heifers hit £1391.60 for a 710kg British Blue cross from Johns Forest, Inverurie.

OTM cattle saw the 13 bullocks realise 165p and £1131.90 for a 570kg Limousin from Russland, Westray, while seven heifers peaked at 209p and £1254 for a 600kg Limousin cross from Clashendamer, Fordyce.

Young bulls (five) sold to 191p and £1642.60 for a 860kg Limousin from Crichie, Inverurie, while.

On the same day, the firm sold 242 beef cast cows which averaged 118.5p (-1.5p) and reached 185.6p for a 625kg Charolais from Glastullich, Nigg Station and £1310 for a 820kg British Blue from Westerton, Echt.

The two dairy cows sold to 107.9p per kg and £685 gross for a 635kg Friesian from Berriedale, South Ronaldsay, while six bulls levelled at 106.4p (-6.7p) and topped at 121p and £1410 for a 1165kg Charolais from Milton of Noth, Rhynie.

Stirling (Cal)

BULLOCKS headed up Caledonian Marts’ sale of 105 prime cattle at Stirling last week, when a Charolais from MI Wainwright, Todhall, Cupar, made 260p per kg and an entry from C Smith, South Flanders, Kippen, sold for £1728.

Heifers sold to 258p twice and £1506 from W Dandie and Sons, Learielaw, Broxburn, while young bulls reached 215p for a Limousin from South Hourat Farms, Dalry and to £1566 for a Limousin from A and J Nimmo, Bogside, Newmains.

Averaging 103p, beef cast cows sold to 158p from M Ralston, Rhoin, Campbelltown and £1190 from Learielaw. Black and white types levelled at 86p having sold to 104p and £900 from A Reid, Plean.

Prime lambs (1399) averaged 161.3p (-1.8p) with SQQs at 167.5p. They sold to £93 for 51kg Beltex from Doune Farms, West Lundie, while 43kg Texels from WN McLaren, Blairgorts, made 202p.

Stirling (UA)

BELTEX from Harviesmailing topped United Auctions’ sale of 3670 prime lambs at Stirling, when they sold for £92 and 212p per kg.

While they averaged 156.50p, 1532 cast ewes and tups peaked at £140 for Texels form Humeston.

Ayr

LEAN and muscled export lambs were easily cashed at Craig Wilson’s sale of 1237 prime lambs on Monday.

Averaging 161.9p per kg with SQQs at 170.2p, they sold to £87 for Beltex lambs from J Hodge, Dykes, Auchenleck, while the same from A Shearer and Son, East Revoch, made 206p.

Cast ewes and rams (707) sold to £145.50 for a pen of Texel ewes from D Gilmour, Broomknowes, while Cheviots topped at £78.50 from J Barclay, Whinpark.

The 250 prime and cattle saw a better show for quality forward and saw the nine heifers forward average 231.2p or £1266.29.

Trade peaked at 251p or £1480.90 for a Limousin heifer from High Gameshill, while 11 bulls levelled at 105.8p and sold to £1350 or 153.4p for a Galloway from Nether Cleugh.

Averaging 103.6p, the 108 beef cast cows sold to £1190 or 158p for a Limousin from South Walton, while 112 dairy types cashed in at 79.4p having sold £1030 or 137.3p for a Friesian from East Brockloch.

St Boswells

A TOP price of £1525.92 was paid for an entry from Bee Edge at Harrison and Hetherington’s weekly sale of 63 clean cattle.

Bullocks (27) averaged 211.96p per kg and sold to 252p (n/c) from Longnewton, while the 35 heifers cashed in at 226.2p having sold to 264p (+11p) from Bee Edge.

Of the 58 cast cows forward, they averaged 11.3p and sold to 177p (-4p) and £1569 from Boon.

North Country Cheviots from Woodside headed up the 2035 prime lambs when they sold to £95, with Beltex from Crookston, realising 216p. They averaged 165.5p (-2.5p).

Carlisle

PRIME cattle sold slightly easier on the week and stayed in line with the national trend at Harrison and Hetherington’s sale of 44 prime cattle at Carlisle.

Trade peaked at £1646.26 for a Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Anderson, Crosby House, Maryport and 237.5p per kg for a British Blue heifer from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse.

Heifers also hit £1624.50 for a British Blue from Nealhouse, Carlisle, with bullocks to 224.5p for a Limousin from Kirkend.

A good entry of 78 prime bulls sold slightly easier on the week having topped at £1687.34 for a Charolais from Messrs Warnock, Dreva, Biggar and 233.5p for a Limousin from Reddings.

In a smaller sale of 277 cast cows,a top price of £1248 and 187.5p was paid for a 666kg Limousin cross from Nilston Rigg.

On the same day, a high number of heavy lambs proved to be no better however lighter types were sharper on the week averaging 181p. The sale topped at £101.80 for six Dutch Texels from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, Haltwhistle, while 40kg Texels from Messrs Harrison, Lesson Hall, Wigton, realised 242p.

Lanark

A LIMOUSIN heifer from David Dickinson, Brockwoodlees, Canonbie, topped Lawrie and Symington’s sale of 144 prime cattle, when it sold for 256p per kg and £1471.

Bullocks sold to 244p for a Limousin from I Wainwright, Todhall Farm, Cupar and £1436 for an entry from Howburn, while young bulls hit 213p from Newsteadings.

Among the cast cows, beef types peaked at £105 from Toxside and 131p from Townhead, while dairy cows reached £725 and 105p from Shotlinn.

A smaller show of 1343 prime lambs met a mixed trade, with heavy lambs again harder to cash and best quality and export types sharper on the week. Averaging 162p with SQQs at 168p, the day included the annual show and sale of Beltex and Beltex cross prime lambs, which attracted more than 20 pens of lambs. Judge, S Stark, Alton Farm, awarded the championship to a 42kg pen from A Baillie, Carstairs Mains, which he later bought for £100. Reserve went to a similar pen from R and M Struthers, Collielaw, which also realised £100.

The sale of cast ewes topped at £150 for Texels from Allanfauld.

Longtown

A LARGER and improved entry of cast cows and bulls was forward at C and D Auction Marts’ sale of 36 prime cattle, where a top price of 135p per kg was paid for a Limousin cow from D Baxter, Moss Side, Hethersgill.

The gross trade hit £865 for a Shorthorn from Meikle Whitriggs.

In the sheep, 3953 prime lambss sold to 263p and £109 for a Beltex from DS and RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill.

Texels from J Harrison, Luce Mains, Ecclefechan, topped the 4408 cast ewes and rams at £154.

Castle Douglas

EXPORT lambs with less fat were easily sold at Wallets Marts’ sale of 1744 prime and cast sheep at Castle Douglas, while heavy and fat lambs proved harder to sell.

Averaging 162.87p per kg, with SQQs at 167.93p, the 1375 prime lambs sold to £80.50 for a pen of heavy Suffolks from Glenkiln Farm Partnership, Crocketford, while export types sold to 193p for Beltex lambs from Messrs Jardine, Upper Hardland, Balmaclellan.

Dingwall

HEIFERS from Bridgend Farm, Dingwall, headed up Dingwall and Highland Marts’ sale and sold to 227p twice for a 590kg Limousin cross and a 625kg Limousin cross, while another weighing 645kg sold for £1451.25. In all, the 20 heifers averaged 214.9p (+0.5p).

New season lambs (632) averaged 157.5p (-2.8p) with 252 SQQs at 160.8p (-2.9p). They sold to 184.8p and £85.00 for a pen of 46kg Texel crosses from Lochdhu, Nairn.

The 90 ewes and feeding sheep peaked at £111.00 for a Texel cross ewe from Cantraywood House, Croy.

Newton Stewart

GOOD and lean handy weight lambs sold dearer on the week at Craig Wilson’s sale of 1529 prime and cast sheep at Newton Stewart.

Averaging 169.1p with 658 SQQs at 175.8p, the 1049 lambs sold to £88 for a pen of Beltex crosses from J McMillan, Carse O’Clary, and 206.3p for 24 40kg Texel crosses A McCaig, Mount Pleasant..

Among the 480 cast ewes, 265 heavies averaged £60.36 and sold to £114 for Suffolks from Redbrae, while 208 light ewes cashed in at £30.18 and sold to £49.50 for Blackies from J Russell, Crouse.
