A BUSY day at United Auctions' store cattle sale, saw just shy of 1300 head of continental and native-bred cattle along with 223 cast cows change hands where a top price of £1240 was paid for a 668kg Aberdeen Angus cross heifer from Berryhill or 234.60p for a Charolais cross heifer from Gateside.

Bullocks sold to 234.30p for a 382kg Limousin cross from Upper Samieston and £1180 for a 545kg Charolais cross from Moor.

Nethertown topped the dairy bullocks at 140.20p and £740 for 492kg and 537kg British Friesian crosses respectively.

Overall, 626 bullocks averaged 196.11p; 34 bullocks, 125.87p and 626 heifers at 193.29p.

A Charolais cross cow from Rannagulzion and a Simmental cross from Broombrae, led the beef cow entry at 175.30p per kg and £1290 per head, with the 201 cows cashing in at 95.20p. Dairy entries sold to 103.50p and £855 for a Holstein cross from Bandirran, with the 22 cashed levelling at 72.10p.

The entry of 58 breeding cattle peaked at £2800 for a British Blue cross heifer with bull calf at foot from Wester Thomaston.

Carlisle

TRADE was slightly dearer on the week and Harrison and Hetherington's sale of 747 store cattle where a top price of £1325 was paid for a Simmental bullock from JH and RM Lloyd, Fishergill, Aikton, Wigton, while heifers reached £1185 for a Limousin from R Ashley, Chapel Hill, Crackenthorpe, Appleby.

Weaned calves were also sharper on the week, selling to £1050 for an Aberdeen-Angus heifer from Edenbanks and £900 for a Limousin steer from Beamwham.

Strong dairy calves sold well with the entry of 331 peaking at £455 for a British Blue bull calf from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown.

On Monday, the firm's weekly sale of store sheep saw prices peak at £92 for a run of Beltex lambs from Messrs Hewson, Well Head Dean.

A plainer show for quality proved harder to cash at Craig Wilson's sale of 574 store cattle at Ayr, where 280 bullocks averaged 193.7p per kg or £831.82 per head; 48 Friesian bullocks levelled at 127.9p or £509.38 and 246 heifers cashed in at 185.6p or £784.63

Top price was £1250 paid for an Aberdeen-Angus bullock from Laigh Drumdow or 242.9p for Charolais bullocks from Howcommon.

Charolais led the heifers at £1230 from High Kilbride and 217.2p again from Howcommon.

Heifers Peaked at £1230 for a Charolais off High Kilbride or 217.2p for a pen of Charolais off Howcommon.

Bottoms topped the Friesian bullocks at £725 while a pen from Stevenston led the price per kg at 139.3p.

A larger show of 1061 store lambs met a steady trade selling to £66 for Texels from Westlands Farm, Rothesay.

Thainstone

A GOOD trade throughout saw bullocks and heifers improve on the week at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale of 725 store cattle where bullock averages rose by 4.5p to level at 216.2p and heifers cashed in at 205.3p, up a penny.

Bullocks peaked at 270.7p per kg for a 290kg Limousin cross from Osborne Farms, Forfar and £1340 gross for a 662kg Limousin cross from Tomnagorm, Midmar.

Limousins also led the heifer trade at 263.7p for a 292kg entry from Upper Forgie, Keith and £1190 for a 540kg lot from Mosshead, Whitehouse.

Three bulls sold to 180p for a 500kg Charolais cross from Tullochgribban Mains, Dulnain Bridge and £940 for a 548kg Charolais from Pittenkerrie, Glassel.

Store lambs and feeding sheep also sold well with the 2228 lambs peaking at £77 for Texels from Upper Glasslaw, New Pitsligo, while the 585 lambs from the islands hit a top of £70.50 for Texels from Schusan, South Ronaldsay and Suffolks from Rossmyre, Grimbister.

Ewe lambs (125) peaked at £93 for Cheviot Mules from Castle Grant Home Farm, Grantown on Spey with 90 breeding sheep selling to £88 for black gimmers from East Thunderton, Longside. Rams sold to £360 for a Texel shearling from Veltigar, Tankerness.

Breeding sheep from the islands (417) hit a top of £100 for Suffolks from Heatherbrae, Baltasound.

Feeding ewes and rams (894) sold to £111.50 for Beltex ewes from Wester Duncanstone, Insch.

Hexham

JUST shy of 800 head of store cattle to include 179 native breed types and 302 spring-born suckled calves were forward for Hexham and Northern Marts' traditional second Bellingham sale, where a top price of £1370 was recorded for an 18-month-old Limousin cross heifer from John Davison, Lough Green, Langley.

A similarly aged and bred entry from Martin White, Steel Hall, Slaley, topped the steers at £1325.

Natives peaked at £1300 for an older Angus cross heifer from Selby and Alan Robson, Yatesfield, Otterburn whilst steers by the black bull hit £1250 from Peter Charleton, Little Harle, Kirkwhelpington.

The best of the suckled calves sold well, however lesser, later born types were easier than the main sale held a month ago. Leading this section at £955 was a nine-month-old steer from Messrs Dent, Beamwham, Haydon Bridge, whilst heifers were topped at £880 from Messrs Storrow, Willimoteswick, Bardon Mill.

A small selection of beef breeding cattle were forward to include Robert Ridley's herd dispersal from Low Huntwell, Sparty Lea, which saw a top price of £2150 paid for a Limousin cross cow due in January, sell to near neighbours Messrs Fairless, White Hill. Messrs Thompson, Allotment Farm, Weardale, reduction sale peakd at £1900 for a black third calver with a June-born bull calf purchased by Nigel and Kirsty Peart, Weeds Farm, Westgate.

A GOOD turnout of mainland buyers resulted in bullocks averaging £703.27 or 216p per kg, up £10 and 5p per kg, respectively while heifers averaged £583 or 193p, down £27 or 18p, at United Auctions sale of 438 cattle at Lochboisdale.

The final sheep sale of the season saw 1028 lambs and sheep change hands to average £36.06.

ON Tuesday, Lawrie and Symington sold 269 store cattle, seven breeding cattle and 441 store and breeding sheep.

Top price was £1205 paid for a 585kg Limousin bullock from TA Bissett and Son, Bishopston and 263p per kg for a 285kg Charolais from The James Hutton Institute, Glensaugh. The 182 bullocks averaged 216p.

The 69 heifers levelled at 217p per kg having sold to £1200 for two 455kg Limousins from West Park Farms and to 2.91p for five 275kg Charolais from The James Hutton Institute, Glensaugh.
