Stirling (UA)

Some 338 store cattle and young bulls and 254 cast cows were forward for United Auctions' sale where bullocks averaged 204.19p; dairy types levelled at 138.30p and heifers cashed in at 194.07p.

Top price was 247.90p per kg paid for a 242kg Limousin cross bullock from from Back O’ Muir, and £1265 given for a 605kg Angus cross from Coulshill.

Heifers sold to 229.70p for a 296kg Limousin cross from Gateside and £1180 for a 646kg Simmental cross from Forneth.

Leading the dairy bullock trade at 146.40p was a 362kg British Friesian cross from Wardpark, while the small cross from South Brackenridge topped the gross trade at £600 for a 443kg entry.

The small entry of eight young bulls sold to 205.70 for a Simmental cross from Berryhill and £980 for a Beef Shorthorn cross from Woodyett. They averaged 191.82p.

Beef cows (251) averaged 103.28p having sold to 173.10p for a Limousin cross from Whitrighill, and to £1410 for a Charolais cross from Balthayock., while the three dairy types which averaged 72.20p hit a top of 85.50p and £615 for a British Friesian cross from Craigend.

* Store lamb averages in general improved on the week at United Auctions' first martinmas sale which comprised 7375 store, feeding and breeding sheep.

Suffolk lamb increased by £3.60 to level at £64.91; Beltex averaged £68.58 (+£4.58); Texels, £62.78 (+£2.39); Mules, £60.29 (+£1.27); Cheviots, £43.12 (-£9.65) and Blackfaces levelled at £46.34 (+£3.64).

Lambs were topped at £75 by Suffolks from Rossieochil, while the breeding sheep market sold to £88 for one-crop Texel ewes from West Gormack.

Dingwall

A QUALITY show met a good stead trade at Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale of 902 stores, 18 head of breeding cattle and 127 OTM cattle, where bullocks averaged 226.7p per kg and heifers cashed in at 211p.

Top price amongst the 512 bullocks was 298.2p per kg paid for a 285kg Limousin cross from Wester Tomloan, Ardclach, and £1280 gross for a pair of 605kg Charolais crosses from Torgormack, Beauly.

A 330kg Limousin cross from Drummuie, Golspie, led the 386 heifers at 484.9pand £1600, while the four young bulls peaked at 218.8p for a 320kg Limousin cross and Easter Aberchalder Estate, Gorthleck and £890 for a 530kg Simmental cross from Coul of Fairburn, Urray.

Breeding cattle peaked at £1320 for a Limousin bull from Castlecraig Farm, Nigg, with the 122 OTM and feed cows cashing in at 89p from a lead bid of 131.1p paid for a 755kg Aberdeen Angus cross from Castlecraig Farm, and £1050 twice, for a 925kg Aberdeen Angus cross from Balintraid, Delny and for a 945kg Hereford cross from Refouble, Glenferness.

The entry of 2942 store sheep saw 1156 lambs average £40.99 having sold to £77.50 for a Beltex cross from Cypress, Achterneed, while the 1468 ewes hit a top of £100 for Cheviots from Cuilaneilan, Kinlochewe.

Rams (125) sold to £450 for a Texel from Veltigar, Tankerness and the 193 feeding sheep peaked at £57 for Cheviots from 186 Migdale, Bonar Bridge.

Carlisle

A SMALLER entry in all departments saw a sharper trade at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly store sale saw 426 head sell to £1340 on two occasions for Limousin heifers from Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna.

Steers peaked at £1300 for a British Blue cross from Messrs Lloyd, Fishergill, Wigton.

Weaned cattle proved much dearer than previous weeks with some lots being £60-£70 up on the week. Top price was £1040 paid for a Limousin cross bull from Messrs Rennie and Sons, Sydenham, Kelso.

Weaned steers sold to £960 for a Simmental cross from Messrs Caddy, 16 The Crescent, Egremont with heifers topped by four British Blues from Messrs Harrison, Sleightholme at £900.

On Friday, the firm's monthly beef breeding sale saw prices peak at £2400 for a British Blue heifer with calf at foot from Messrs Sevenson and Sons, Lower Langshaw.

Quality and size sold well at the mart's weekly sale of store sheep on Monday where TExel cross lambs from Brian Irving, Harper Mill, Roweltown, came out tops at £79.50.

A MIXED show maintained recent rates at Mitchell's store sale where a Blonde steer from AJ Wood, Woodhall Brow, Dean, led the trade at £1175 while heifers sold to £1145 for a Limousin from BJ Harrison, Beck Farm, Wigton.

A good entry of feeding cows peaked at £925 for a British Blue from TI Mitchell, Croft Farm and a flying trade for store lambs was led by Texels from Messrs Bell, Main Street, Cockermouth at £80.

SOME 400 store lambs were forward for C and D Auction Marts' sale at Dumfries, where Texels from Wester Parkgate led the trade at £70.

The firm also conducted the sale of dairy cattle on behalf of W Newlson and Sons, Longrigg, Torthorwald, where Montbeliardes were keenly sought after peaking at £1600 for a second calver.

A third calved black and white led the Holstein Friesians at £1580. Overall, Longrigg sold 130 calved cows to average £759.53; 14 in-calf cows at £901.43 and 14 in-calf heifers at £1019.29.

On Monday, a poorer show of mainly dairy cross cattle and heifers saw trade uphold recent values, selling to £1005 for a Beef Shorthorn heifer from Tregallon.

QUALITY outfits were well wanted at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale of 90 head of adult breeding cattle at Thainstone, staged the same day as their store cattle and sheep sales, where Simmental cross heifers with calves at foot topped the trade on two occasions from South Blachrie, Fyvie at £2400.

Store cattle buyers were more selective for the 368 bullocks and 287 heifers forward and as a result saw averages slip on the week with the former cashing in at 211.8p (-4.4p) and the latter at 201.6p (-3.7p).

Bullocks peaked at 315.2p per kg for a 368kg Limousin cross from Grutha, South Ronaldsay and £1380 gross for a 726kg Shorthorn cross from Haugh, Birse, with heifers selling to 326.8p for a 228kg Limousin from Fodderletter, Tomintoul and £1220 for a pair of 542kg of the same breed from Woodhead of Cairnbanno, New Deer.

Bulls (20) sold to 194.3p for a 296kg Charolais cross from Tullochgribban Mains, Dulnain Bridge and £890 for a Limousin from Greenbrae, Auchterless.

Store lambs were also well bid for at the mart's sale of 3213 lambs, Island sheep, breeding and feeding sheep, where a Texel shearling from Hilton of Culsh, New Deer, led the trade at £350.

Store lambs (1479) peaked at £77 for Continentals from Mains of Lurg, Nethy Bridge, with those from the Islands (513) hitting £67 for Suffolks from Gilbraes, Twatt.

Ewe lambs saw a top of £80 for Texels from Crathie, Ballater, while breeding sheep sold to £92 for three-year-old continentals from The Bothy, Rivehill. Island gimmers and ewes (246) sold to £80 for Texel gimmers from Da Knowe, Twatt.

Leading the entry of 880 feeding sheep at £121 were Texel ewes from Easter Aquhollie, Rickarton.

A SOUND entry of 331 head of store cattle from the counties of Northumberland and Durham and north of the Border, sold to £1355 on two occasions at Hexham and Northern Marts' sale last week

First was a 20-month-old heavy Charolais cross steer from Messrs Tweddle, Grange Farm, Cornsay, while the second was an 18-month-old black Limousin bullock from Alan Ogle, Comb Hill, Slaley.

Heifers peaked at £1310 for a Charolais cross heifer from Messrs McCreery, Wyseby Hill.

Leading the youngest class of cattle at £1035 was a 10-month-old bullock from Andy Thompson, East Unthank.

Store lambs met a buoyant trade with the 4196 head peaking at £115 for a Beltex from P and EB Robson, Middle Horsleyhope, Durham. Mule lambs were topped at £70 for a pen of 50 from I Potts, Redburn, Rookhope, Bishop Auckland.

SOME 75 store cattle, 20 OTM and 757 sheep were sold through Dingwall and Highland Marts' where bullocks sold to 244.7p per kg for two 235kg Limousin crosses from Tigh Airigh, Blarmacfoldach, and £760 a 510kg Luing from Scallastle Farm, Isle of Mull.

Heifers peaked at 223.6p for 275kg Limousin crosses from Fersit, Roy Bridge, and £690 for a 550kg Simmental cross from 5 Bunnacaimbe, Arisaig.

A 515kg Hereford cross from 1 Blaich, Fort William, led the OTM cattle at 134p per kg while a 745kg Aberdeen Angus cross from Ardtornish Farms, Morven, topped the gross section at £810.

Store lambs (471) sold to £52 for Texel crosses from Glendoe Estate, Fort Augustus and feeding sheep (286) hit a top of £44 for a Blackface ewe from Insh Farm, Spean Bridge.

The catalogued entry of 384 store cattle was topped at £1180 for bullocks from Dunlossit Estate or 258p from Ardtalla Estate.

Heifers sold to £980 from Octofad and Dunlossit Estate, while entries from Knocklearach, made 238p.

ON Monday, Penrith and District Farmers' Mart staged their fortnightly sale of store cattle which saw a dearer trade for the 200 head and a top price of £1285 paid for a Charolais bullock from EA and W Strong, Ploveriggs.

The same home also topped the heifers at £1195 for a pair of 19-month-old Charolais.
